[SOLVED] Install or repair?

Hi everyone,
Medium level user but a bit rusty.

I have a computer with Arch installed, but I haven't used it for 3 years.

Yesterday when I wanted to update, it wouldn't let me, due to a conflict with a package that I ended up uninstalling; now Arch doesn't want to boot.

Do you recommend a clean install or try to repair?

I most definitely wouldn't blindly reinstall, as if you had nothing installed. I would boot with archiso, mount your device, pacstrap into your installation and reinstall the package you uninstalled.

You can use the Arch Linux Archive to upgrade the system in steps, paying careful attention to the news articles to ensure that any required intervention is performed correctly. But I think reinstalling will be easier and quicker.

Without real information no one could possibly give you an informed answer. If you want to reinstall, and if you have a separate home partition, then you could reinstall while leaving the home partition untouched which should make getting back to roughly your intended current state much easier.

First of all I want to thank you for your responses.
I think the packet conflict is because the system has been unattended for years.
The reason why I have not given more details of the package that I uninstalled is because I cannot reload the system and I do not know how to boot with archiso.
Finally say that I do have a separate home partition.

Sorry if I didn't express myself well (English is not my first language); what i meant is that once i load the os from usb, i don't know how to go to hd and install the package i delete.

There are several ways to do this - but first we should gather information. This is easier anyways.

Once you load the os from the usb, mount your root partition with something like the following:

mount /dev/sda2 /mnt

You man need to replace the 2 in "sda2" with another number for your root partition, but I think from the output you provided that'd be it. Many common / simple partitioning schemes would have the root partition in position 2, so this is most likely.

Once mounted, you can retrieve the pacman.log from /mnt/var/log/pacman.log and upload it to a file sharing site:

curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io < /mnt/var/log/pacman.log

This will give you a short url in return. Post that url here.

However, it looks like you may have removed glibc. If that's the case, fixing it would take several steps: you'd need to first get an appropriately old glibc from the arch linux archive mirror, install that with pacman's "-r" flag to install to the mounted partition at /mnt, then chroot (with arch-chroot), and then walk through several updates with the arch linux archive and addressing any manual interventions from the news along the way.

This would be an excellent learning experience - if you were ready for it. But your questions and answers suggest you are not. It may be hard for members here to walk you through the full solution. But that does not mean reinstalling arch linux would be wise: why use arch at all? You should get some experience with a more "user-friendly" distro first. Debian may be good for you.

Hi everyone again,

Sorry for leaving the topic open for so long; actually right now I'm about to mark it as [SOLVED].

I am sorry to say that I was not able to restore my system to the previous state (I suppose my level of knowledge is very poor).
I have reinstalled Arch, and I currently have the system almost as it was before. Although I have invested a lot of time, I suppose it has helped me to learn many things.

I appreciate the help you have offered me, we continue to see each other.
