This happens right after updating, so is probably related to Nvidia, as always. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

Downgrading to nvidia 495-44 from 495-46 fixes the issue.

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

Yes, I did. I always do after upgrading video drivers or the kernel; with this update it was both

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

Those other forum posts seem to be the issue I'm having as well. Thanks for posting. I won't mark this as resolved just yet, since it isn't, but it's good to know the issue is getting traction and it's being worked on.

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

In Arch the issue isn't being worked on because there's no evidence that this is a packaging problem. I suppose the best you can do is give Nvidia enough information to work this out. For me the driver is working just fine.

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

The nasty part is that this is all over the place - afaics we've single and multi-GPU systems, different kernels, both recent Xorg server releases, single- and multiple outputs … and the nvidia module doesn't even show up in the stacktrace…
W/ https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 2#p2009832 it *might* be related to GLX (reports like "lightdm works fine but mate crashes") but that's a wild guess - maybe the session does something to the screen configuration that the DM.

Since it's running fine for you, do you run a GL context (preferably GL compositor) w/ the session?

I run an i3 session without a compositor.

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

Since (afaics) everyone affected runs a session w/ a (GL) compositor and you don't and you're not affected, you're in a (so far) unique position to test a possible cause…
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Picom (nb. that it defaults to the xrender backend)

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

I run a i3 session too, indeed *with* picom. I did just find out that the crash only occurs when using `prime-run` to start the application in question. My Xorg session runs—by default—on Nvidia, so I don't actually need `prime-run` to get offloading, it was simply left over from when I ran Xorg on my iGPU.

I have my picom configured to use GLX backend. I will test using xrender and see whether that changes the issue at all. I will also try to reproduce the issue with applications other than Minecraft.

Update: Turning off picom or changing to xrender backend does not change the issue: starting Minecraft with `prime-run` crashes Xorg

That would make prime-run idempotent. What's the output of "glxinfo -B" and "prime-run glxinfo -B" (prepare for the second call to take down your session!)

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

You're indeed running on the nvidia chip - does just running minecraft (no prime-run) kill the session?
Do you use some of the fancier picom features (eg. blur)?

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

No, just running minecraft without prime-run does not kill the session, and it does run it on the GPU. I do use blurring for shadows, according to my config, and I use some features like fading between workspaces and automatic unredirection on fullscreen so games aren't slowed down by picom. For reference, my full picom config:

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

prim-run isn't exactly complex…
https://github.com/archlinux/svntogit-p … /prime-run

You could try whether one of those vars alone triggers this, this might be down to something as ridiculous as parsing an environment variable…

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

You are correct in that: passing `__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1' kills the session, either of the other two does not.

Since (afaics) everyone affected runs a session w/ a (GL) compositor and you don't and you're not affected, you're in a (so far) unique position to test a possible cause…
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Picom (nb. that it defaults to the xrender backend)

(Sorry, english is not my native language)

Myself run into the same problem. Also using Mate DE and nvidia blob. Got the same Xorg.X.log bachtrace entries and coredumps. For first i downgraded kernel and nvidia packages to 5.14.15.arch1-1 and 495.44-2.

Today i've tested a bit more. First done a full sys update.

- Tested with i3 as windowmanager: no problem
- Started mate-session: problem back
- Disabled Mate's compositing-manager: no problem
- Enabled picom in xinitrc: no problem

So - for me - it seems that the problem part is the combination with Mate's windowmanager (marco) and the build-in compisiting and (maybe) the current GL in nvidia 495.46.x

Starting Mate (marco wm) with disabled compositing i could immidiatley reproduce the crash/coredump when enabling the mate compositer via Menu->System->Settings->Appereace->Windows->SoftwareCompositing.

One could easily disable mate/marcos compositor with installing dconf-editor and navigate to /org/mate/marco/general and disable compositing.manager. This could be done via a different Xorg-Session/Windowmanager which is not affected by the problem.
Or install picom and let it start before mate-session, so picom would get preference before the still enabled mate/marco's compositing manager.

Maybe it's worth to recompile the marco package against the current (arch) software versions...

Re: Xorg Segmentation Fault

The X11 server crashes - that's by definition not a client problem.
Also there're equal crash reports for picom (did you switch the backend to GLX)?

From #17 it sounds like the nvidia driver does something to the server when output configuration clashes w/ a GL context (setup)

As Sven pointed out, the kinda rushed release could indicate a CVE hotfix… that was sewed w/ a very hot needle…
Since we've no backtrace leading into the nvidia driver and no code to look at and no overly obvious pattern so far (the picom/gl situation could be quite relevant here) the best thing you can do is to keep the driver at .44 and wait for a proper update sad

That's a point, yes

seth wrote:

Not the first tries.
I currently started mate and picom with:
picom --backend glx &
in my xinitrc and mate-session was started without an issue. Only difference/annoying: in mate-Terminal (x terminal emulation) when using less or anything with a pager or midnightcommander(mc) I got a lot of "flickering", "line jumping" and input lags. That's not the case when using picoms xrender default backend.

For myself I could live perfectly with mate-session without a compositor (or take a deeper look at picom). An uptodate system is more valuable for me.

Don't know if it's relevant, about the coredumps/backtraces and the "missing" nvidia presence: If i start mate-session without compositor and (re)enable it during the running session i got a different coredump as before. But also the nvidia module "seems not involved"...
