Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

Hi

I use fully updated Arch + KDE Plasma on my desktop computer.

My ethernet adapter:

04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 06)
Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Onboard Ethernet
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 18
	I/O ports at e000 [size=256]
	Memory at f7c00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
	Memory at f0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 3
	Capabilities: [50] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [70] Express Endpoint, MSI 01
	Capabilities: [b0] MSI-X: Enable+ Count=4 Masked-
	Capabilities: [d0] Vital Product Data
	Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting
	Capabilities: [140] Virtual Channel
Capabilities: [160] Device Serial Number 01-00-00-00-68-4c-e0-00
	Kernel driver in use: r8169
	Kernel modules: r8169, r8168

After disabling auto-negotiation and set speed to 1 Gbps by running this command

$ sudo ethtool -s enp4s0 autoneg off speed 1000 duplex full

my adapter tries to connect, it fails, auto-negotiation is automatically reverted to 'on' (according to the command below) and then the connection is stabilished.

$ sudo ethtool enp4s0
Settings for enp4s0:
Supported ports: [ TP MII ]

If I disable auto-negotiation in Connections module of KDE Plasma settings, my adapter, according to dmesg log, enters in a loop trying to activate itself,
but without success. Consequently a connection can not be stabilished.

How can I connect at 1 Gbps with auto-negotiation off?
Thanks.

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

according to dmesg log, enters in a loop trying to activate itself, but without success

There's probably an actual error in the dmesg that would be helpful to see?
Does this also happen w/the r8168 driver?
Is this related to your WOL woes?

Does this also happen w/the r8168 driver?

Yes. The only difference is that the mentioned loop does not occur with r8168 driver.

Is this related to your WOL woes?

Nothing changed after disabling wol by running

$ sudo ethtool -s enp4s0 wol d

Offline

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

What I meant was whether your efforts to disable autoneg are because of the WOL situation (or why else are you doing this, since it seems idempotent)

What seems suspicious is the flow control changing from rx/tx to off or vv. - since it's part of the negotiations w/ the link partner, you could try to control that when turning off autoneg.
Also I'd disable NM during any of this, because it might monitor the NIC state change, throw a tantrum and seek to revert it.

Edit: and don't use the plasma thing for this - you're just introducing more variables (I guess it just picks a fight w/ NM or the NIC over the state of autoneg)

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

I'm not messing with auto-negotiation because wol problems.
auto-negotiation is not working well, yesterday my network was limited to 10 Mbps after login.

I have just noticed something interesting. I can successfully set auto-negotiation to off and speed to 1000 Mbps running these commands in sequence:

$ sudo ethtool -s enp4s0 autoneg off speed 100 duplex full
$ sudo ethtool -s enp4s0 autoneg off speed 1000 duplex full

However, my network has no connectivity despite this output:

$ sudo ethtool enp4s0
Settings for enp4s0:

        Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

my network has no connectivity

What does that actually mean? What's the output of "ip a" (notably: is there a carrier) and your system journal (covering attempts to connect to the link partner/obtain a lease)

Ceterum censeo: cable. It's always the cable. You've supposingly GBit ethernet but the negotiation sporadically ends up w/ 100MBit? Cable. Because it's always the cable.

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

'no connectivity' means that I'm unable to load any webpage with my internet browser and ping fails even when I use another network cable.

$ ping www.archlinux.org
ping: www.archlinux.org: Temporary failure in name resolution

I'm seriously thinking to replace this crappy realtek adapter. I just need to find a cheap second hand intel pci-e adapter.
Brand new intel adapter is expensive in my shitty third-world country.

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

'no connectivity' means that … ping fails

can have an entire stack of reasons from "no carrier" all the way up to a DNS misconfiguration, crossing a bad route, a stale lease, colliding network services and whatnot else
Start w/ "ip a" for the most basic condition test.

So at this point enp4s0 is up, has a carrier and a lease (192.168.0.50)

ip r

tried these commands in sequence, without success too:

$ sudo ethtool -A enp4s0 rx on tx on
$ sudo ethtool -s enp4s0 autoneg off speed 1000 duplex full

Do you want the outputs of the commands from post 10 when there is no connectivity?

Yes, and it would seem that you need to turn them off, rather than on.
(Still suspecting the cable though…)

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

You've carrier, lease, route but no signal.
You likely got the former from the 100MBit connection.

Because of the 100/1000 ituation it's unlikely sth. like powersaving. Maybe the link partner (your router) can't handle it, but the usual cause is the cable.
Might be loosely seated or none of your cable cable (you need at least cat5) is in a condition to transmit the signal over the required distance.

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

In one cable is printed 'category5 patch cord' and more info, in another cable is printed 'cat5e' and more info.
If the cable was the problem, I think my speed would never be 1 Gbps. I get 1 Gbps when auto-negotiation is on,
the slower speed occurs intermittently.

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

"intermittently" is acutally what makes be blame the cable…

Try to allow autoneg and disable power control

echo on | sudo tee /sys/class/net/enp4s0/power/control

(yes "on" and nb. that this won't survive a reboot and power management tools might actually frequently reset that, so cat the file to see it's present status)

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

initial setting:

$ cat  /sys/class/net/enp4s0/power/control
auto

your command did not solve the connectivity problem after these commands in sequence:

$ sudo ethtool -s enp4s0 autoneg off speed 100 duplex full
$ sudo ethtool -s enp4s0 autoneg off speed 1000 duplex full

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

You shall not deativate autonegotiation nor switch the speeds but only disable power management (so "cat  /sys/class/net/enp4s0/power/control" says "on")…

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

if power management setting is lost after reboot, it is useless. auto-negotiation fails on boot+login.
I also have lots of rx/crc errors.

$ ip -s -s link show enp4s0
2: enp4s0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000

RX errors: length crc frame fifo overrun
                     0 128 0 0 0
TX: bytes packets errors dropped carrier collsns
      40639881 507039 0 0 0 0
TX errors: aborted fifo window heartbt transns
                     0 0 0 0 2

Firstly I will buy another network cable. If the annoying problems with this realtek adapter persist,
I will replace it with an intel pci/pci-e adapter.

No it's not - you can set them w/ the device.

auto-negotiation fails on boot+login.

I thought it was an intermittent drop to 100 Mbit??

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

Sometimes the network speed is set do 10 Mbps after boot+login. I do not pay attention if the speed drops do 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps while I'm using my computer. All my problems with this realtek adapter:
bizarre bug with wol (my recent topic on this issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=271975 )
buggy anto-negotiation
rx/crc errors
r8169 driver intermittently fails do load after cold boot (my topic on this issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1913620 )

I even had a problem with intel wi-fi adapter on my laptop in the past, fortunately already fixed (my topic on this issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1970085 )

Network on linux is often problematic. sad

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

1Gbps requires auto-negotiation, there is no forced mode. Downshifts to 100Mbps/10Mbps indicate a physical problem.
Apart from changing the cable you could test with a different link partner, e.g. put a switch between your system and the link partner.
There even have been cases where after a lot of problem tracking users found that corrosion in the RJ45 port caused connection issues.

Thanks for your comment. In this case, Connections module of KDE Plasma settings should not offer 1 Gbps option when auto-negotiation is set to 'Manual'.

A few minutes ago my system hung completely, even mouse pointer froze, (this is another intermittent problem on my system, it happened on 14 December too, after update to kde frameworks 5.89) while I was downloading a 4.3 GiB torrent with Deluge client.
I tried to connect to my desktop via ssh using my laptop, but without success. I was able to reboot with reisub magic key though.
Here is the journalctl log, the system hung approximately at Jan 02 11:01:00

Could network problems to be related to these random system hangs?

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

Network issues should not cause a system hang (at least if working locally). Question is whether actually the system hangs or just the UI. You could try switching to a console or connecting via SSH to the system (provided you have another system from where you can do it).
Seeing the rx errors in your dmesg that's another indicator for a physical issue.

Re: Realtek adapter refuses to conect at 1 Gbps if auto-negotiation is off

Thanks again hkall. As I said im my previous post, I was unable to connect to the frozen system via ssh.
Unfortunately I have no switch available to test the anto-negotiation, as you suggested.
I have two cables (cat5 and cat5e), both give me the same problems. I will replace the nic in the next days/weeks.
