Re: Arch with xfce4 is running slow ?

It's not NM that's the problem. I'm on wired connections, with the same network config on laptop and desktop. This only happens on Desktop, laptop is fine.

I always assumed an NVidia thing (dual GTX1070, though it happened before I added the second card).

As I say, I can  live with it, but if there's a solution out there, kudos.

Re: Arch with xfce4 is running slow ?

The dhcp server (your router) could still delay for a conflicting stale lease - the warm/cold condition is weired and this might indicate an actual problem somewhere else.
Does xfdesktop log into  ~/.xsession-errors ?

Re: Arch with xfce4 is running slow ?

All devices on my LAN are on static IPs, and so there should be no lease conflict.

I do have an ~/.xsession-errors file, but it's empty.

Re: Arch with xfce4 is running slow ?

My last best idea would be to replace /usr/bin/xfdesktop w/ a script that does

#/bin/sh
strace -fto /tmp/xfdesktop.strace /usr/bin/xfdesktop

and hopefully be able to detect the stall there.

are you talking about the network manager

Yes. On all levelsa.
I basically wonder whether xfce4-desktop tries to do some network IO here and times out because of that.

i did as you to ;s i completely closed down the service from systemctl and there was no change, i did got output of the time command you gave.

time command output after network manager closing down

[musicarch@musicArch ~]$ time echo "scale=5000; a(1)*4" | bc -l

Obviously. Just use the owner/group and permissions of /usr/bin/xfdesktop

Re: Arch with xfce4 is running slow ?

Can you post 'blame, critical-chain and plot' from 'systemd-analyze'?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Improv … ot_process

Did you check i/o activity? Is the HDD (LED) working (flashing) all the time?

Re: Arch with xfce4 is running slow ?

i did as you told , there are number of files in /tmp folder which change with each new power on of laptop.also they dont have anything in them , i was not able to see the content of " dbus- "name file.

What?

Ok, I guess I should have made this less casual - if you blindly followed this you probably deleted the binary (because I ran in the oldest of all traps there)

pacman -S xfdesktop # because you likely deleted the binary
mv /usr/bin/xfdesktop /usr/bin/xfdesktop.bin # move the binary to a save space ;-)
printf '#!/bin/sh\nstrace -fto /tmp/xfdesktop.strace /usr/bin/xfdesktop.bin\n' > /usr/bin/xfdesktop # create script
chown --reference /usr/bin/xfdesktop.bin /usr/bin/xfdesktop # copy owner
chmod --reference /usr/bin/xfdesktop.bin /usr/bin/xfdesktop # copy permissions

Re: Arch with xfce4 is running slow ?

'systemd-analyze' looks ok.

One more thing i could think of: Thunar/gvfs/automount.

i didnt deleted the binary as i made a backup copy of the file before doing any edits.still i tried to reinstall the binary for safety. this is what i have from teminal.

i guess everything is good in terms of binary.

i am trying again as commands you gave , will fill in details.

EDIT: After doing things you suggested i looked in /tmp which shows same result as i shown in post above.

Re: Arch with xfce4 is running slow ?

Are you suggesting there's no /tmp/xfdesktop.strace? Does xfdesktop start?

Re: Arch with xfce4 is running slow ?

What'S the output of "ps aux | grel xfdesktop"? You you did everything right, there should be two matches - one for the script and one for the binary?

Re: Arch with xfce4 is running slow ?

Ok, but that's pointless - we need to know why the strace fails to produce a log.

Re: Arch with xfce4 is running slow ?

Restore the script of #37 and after logging in check for the processes (#42)?
I want to see whether you actually end up running "strace xfdesktop"
