Can't change resolution or refresh rate with xrandr (i915 and nvidia)

Hi all,

I have the ASUS G512LW, running the latest g14 kernel. When trying to change resolution/refresh rate with xrandr, I get

xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

. This is after running:

cvt 1920 1080 60
xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync -vsync
xrandr --addmode eDP1 1920x1080_60.00
xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1920x1080_60.00

Changing ctrc doesnt work either.
I have tried with and without xf86-video-intel, as well as with my discrete GPU loaded with nvidia.

the end of my Xorg0.log:

[508.054] (EE) intel(0): failed to set mode: Invalid argument [22]

I'm using Xorg with i3-gaps.

Does anyone know what's going on? I've done a bunch of googling and found nothing. I've also done more troubleshooting, but I cant remember off the top of my head. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Can't change resolution or refresh rate with xrandr (i915 and nvidia)

Are you sure you need a custom modeline for this? What's the output of just xrandr -q ?

Please post your xorg log and output of "xrandr -q" and "xrandr --listproviders", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Having a similar story with an Alienware M15 R6. Apparently these panels lack kernel support.
I would love to be wrong tho

Strange. The thing is, a while ago I ran gnome on fedora 34 with the g14 kernel, and changing refresh rate worked. I installed gnome and tried again but to no avail. Maybe a kernel update removed support? I'm going to try the lts kernel with fedora again and see if that works

Re: Can't change resolution or refresh rate with xrandr (i915 and nvidia)

I finally managed to parse my edid:

parse-edid < /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-eDP-1/edid

Checksum Correct

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier "LQ156M1JW09"
	ModelName "LQ156M1JW09"
	VendorName "SHP"
	# Monitor Manufactured week 14 of 2019
	# EDID version 1.4
	# Digital Display
	DisplaySize 340 190
	Gamma 2.20
	Option "DPMS" "false"
	Modeline "Mode 0" -hsync -vsync
	Modeline "Mode 1" -hsync -vsync
EndSection

Which is strange because the Xorg DDC gathers 2 modelines. I also found https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=257635

I will try editing my xorg conf to see if i can get any luck.

Thanks

Re: Can't change resolution or refresh rate with xrandr (i915 and nvidia)

I found that the read-edid package does not work well anymore. get-edid fails completely, and parse-edid won't show the detailed timings. I get more information from edid-decode-git from the AUR which shows the detailed modes.

Curious if the custom modeline worked.
