xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused [SOLVED]

I have trouble starting xorg. I get this fatal error when starting xorg:

Fatal server error:
(EE) no screens found
Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: unexpected signal 2

What I have tried:

  • Changing to the nouveau driver

  • Downgrading the kernel

  • Regenrating xorg.conf with nvidia-xconfig

If I remember correctly the error message changed from

xinit: connection to x server lost

to the one mentioned above after downgrading the kernel.

Please ask for relevant information.

Don't do that (especially if you switched to nouveau).  Remove whatever was generated.  Upgrade the kernel again (to get back to the "original" error), then post a complete xorg.log along with your ~/.xinitrc.

EDIT: from your post history, I'd speculate you had a kernel upgrade and your AUR-provided nvidia-driver may have needed an update for the new kernel (dkms packages may not need to be updated with every kernel as the modules get rebuilt, but from the AUR package's comments it sounds like the current kernel introduced an incompatibility with older versions of the package).

Yes I did upgrade back again but can't find the previous xorg.conf file. I have tried commenting out the .xinitrc file but no change.

Apparently there are some exceptions with nvidia - but generally one should not have an xorg.conf at all.  So just get rid of it.  Only create xorg.conf.d files if/when needed.

What do you mean you "commented out the .xinitrc"?  That's not something you should do.  I asked you to post your xinitrc so we can see what's in it.

As for the log, please post the complete log - that's just the start - there's no error there at all.

Re: xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused [SOLVED]

Did you rebuild your initicpio after upgrading the package - I don't know if that's included in a post-install script, but from other threads it would appear that it isn't.  Run `mkinitcpio -P` as root, then reboot and try again.

If that also fails, you may want to update the thread title to include "nvidia-470xx: no screens found" to get more help from those experienced with nvidia drivers.

EDIT: this is still with the xorg.conf?  That should be removed as previously noted and reiterated below.

Re: xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused [SOLVED]

Remove the xorg.conf auto-config works correctly since ages and there's no bug nvidia-xconfig can fix that are actually due to other causes. The message in the log said there's failure to talk to the kernel module, so post a

pacman -Qs 'nvidia|linux.*headers'
sudo dmesg | grep nvidia
lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D'

If it uses the nouveau kernel module I guess it explains why there were kernel modules missing.

You don't remember what you did yesterday or today between posts 5 and 6?  As for trying to install them again "with no luck" what did you do, and what error message did you get?

How to what?  install packages?  If you don't know how to install the package, why have we been carrying on for several posts under the assumption that you had upgraded that package?

Follow the AUR page on the wiki to learn how to build / install AUR packages if that's what you mean - but I find that quite hard to believe given that you've apprently done this before.
