[SOLVED] Wireguard is completelly broken?

Hello. I am trying to use my wireguard VPN to access my home network, but it doesn't work at all and I am getting the following errors for NetworkManager.service:

May 05 08:33:32 ARGHHH NetworkManager[923]: <info> [1651728812.4278] audit: op="connection-activate" uuid="67315592-114d-4251-85ad-a85bc70a8043" name="Home" pid=1713 uid=1000 result="fail" reason="The VPN service 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.wireguard' was not installed."

Latest updates, stock kernel. Any tips on how to fix it?

It's your job to rebuild AUR packages against new libraries.

But wireguard is suppossed to be integrated into NetworkManager, isn't it? Kernel module already exists with latest kernels, so it should be supported out of the box.

Could you please elaborate what needs to be rebuilt?

Re: [SOLVED] Wireguard is completelly broken?

You can either use the native wireguard support inside NetworkManager - this results in having to use  "nmcli" under Gnome/Cinnamon. KDE/Plasma on the other hand supports this.

Or you can work around it:

1. Although no longer available via the AUR portal, get a snapshot from https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/ … git.tar.gz, build and install it.

2. Downgrade NetworkManager to 1.34.0

No idea. I just searched for the package, and saw it was in the AUR.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireguard is completelly broken?

The Linux kernel has had support for wireguard since v5.6 (released March 2020). So the core/linux package and core/linux-lts package both support wireguard.
Although OP didn't mention any AUR packages, it seems maybe you were using AUR(s) called networkmanager-wireguard/networkmanager-wireguard-git which are no longer in the AUR repo.

I don't use NetworkManager (thankfully) but from the following link, it seems that if you want to add your wireguard config to it, you need to use it's cli tool nmcli

Re: [SOLVED] Wireguard is completelly broken?

I've solved this issue. Looks like I (accidentally?) removed wireguard network manager plugin package from my system and wireguard profiles on my PC stopped working...

On Gnome I used "Advanced Network Settings" GUI app to create a new Wireguard connection (it exists as connection type). I guess Gnome is not yet updated to support native NetworkManager wireguard integration and it cannot be done via Gnome GUI.

After I created a new wireguard profile, it works just fine. VPN profile as expected is not shown in Gnome and I have to use either "nmtui" or "nmcli" in order to activate/deactivate it...

There is a gnome shell extension available for that: https://github.com/atareao/wireguard-indicator

Native support will need still some time:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-co … uests/1125
