Laptop freezing on sleep

After recent updates, my old Thinkpad W520 is no longer capable of waking up from sleep. To be more precise: the system does wake up because I can hear the hard drive spinning, but the screen remains black, I cannot switch to a different console, and trying to ssh into it fails (system is down is the reply).

I checked both journalctl and Xorg's log and I cannot see anything relevant: everything seems to be ok until the system suspends, then nothing gets written to the logs when resuming from sleep fails. This makes the issue very hard to solve...

My system has a Quadro 1000M Nvidia card, which runs the 390xx nvidia drivers. However, I have the feeling Xorg is not to blame---the total lack of response when waking up seems to suggest the problem lies deeper than the graphic system.

To make think more interesting, when I  force the laptop to shut down and then reboot it, often (75% of the times at least), the boot up fails as well on a udev step. But not always.
Finally, I seem to have an USB issue which may be responsible for all this mess. Latest boot shows the following errors:

lsusb tells me (if I read the kernel naming conventions correctly), that the error are related to the Rate Matching Hub (which I don't know what it is)

No signs of a kernel panic?  If there is noting in the logs, check if the keyboard lights are blinking when the system is frozen.

no signs of a panic, no. Nothing in the logs, lights are not blinking. In fact everything seems normal---hard drive spins back to life, laptop hums, etc. Except it is completely unresponsive. Truly maddening
