Lightdm and huion issue [RESOLVED]

Ok, I've been trying to fix this issue for a month and am stuck.  After a system upgrade, lightdm failed.  Had to use the rescue stick.
Tried a fix that involved xorg and we began having issues with my daughter's art tablet.  The pen only turned on for a couple seconds.
So we tried some things.  Lots of things.  Now, we go straight to tty and cannot get lightdm going.  When we manually start lightdm, we just get a fresh login screen and no de starts. I've tried lots of things, followed lots of wiki topics and not getting anywhere.  At one point we had de going after manually starting lightdm, but after trying one of the fixes -I've tried so many I honestly couldn't tell you which- we can't get the de to start anymore.  At this point I just want to get back to having lightdm load on startup and get the desktop back.  Can anyone help?

… you apparently caught bullshitia trumpensis…

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57855
Boot the mutli-user.target, REMOVE WHATEVER XORG.CONF YOU'VE LIKELY ADDED ("a fix that involved xorg") and try to launch lightdm and post
- the xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
- the lightdm log (/var/log)
- the system journal ("sudo journalctl -b")

You can use the tip in the first link below to post them fom the console.
For a more common solution see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start and https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/LightD … TTY_output

Re: Lightdm and huion issue [RESOLVED]

We have undone all the things we tried.  I'm basically telling the daughter what to type while I'm at work and she's at home.  Not ideal.  There was only one .conf file that was altered, to make lightdm wait 5 sec.  It didn't help so I had her change it back.  I'll go read the links.

Re: Lightdm and huion issue [RESOLVED]

Unless it's super time-critical (rather not, since it's been a month) it's probably better to wait until you're home than to play a literal phone game.

Re: Lightdm and huion issue [RESOLVED]

When I'm not at real work I'm doing yard work or trying to get my 5 hours of sleep at night.
Lightdm is working. Sort of.  Computer still goes tty and so I systemctl to start it, even tho it's enabled.  Desktop environment is not, I just get bounced back to lightdm.  Tried both xfce and lxde.  Daughter installed gdm one day and was able to get to a De, even tho it was via lightdm.  She said there was 2 gnome options - one didn't work and the other was "a very ugly one" with a rounded blue box on a black bg with a 9x9 icon of dots which sounded like maybe a mobile/tablet display.  She removed gdm.
I don't know how to read a log file or even view it even though I've spent the past 3 hours trying to figure out out from the wikis.
Edit
I found a screen shot of the exact things she typed that took us from a de with manually started dm to no de.  And I'm sorry, but I'm typing this on a tiny phone from a screenshot on another phone so there may be spelling errors as I can't read one phone with my glasses on and I can't read the other with my glasses off.  They include install of xf86-video-intel, xorg-server (both of which gave an up to date warning), xorg-apps, xorg-xinit, xterm, xorg-fonts-100dpi, xorg-fonts 75dpi, autorandr.  After that we had no desktop environment.

Re: Lightdm and huion issue [RESOLVED]

If your daughter is going to fix this, get her on the forum.
I'm not playing a telephone game over screenshots when she can just copy and paste comands from and to here.

So you barely find the time to sleep but to waste 3 hours struggling to understand the 3 location options in a single paragraph - maybe sleep more.

Re: Lightdm and huion issue [RESOLVED]

Please use code tags, https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode
Also that's not the xorg log, but the tail of it. And the server has terminated successfully
Same goes for the lightdm log.

Re: Lightdm and huion issue [RESOLVED]

The X11 server starts and runs successfully for 4 seconds, that's not the problem.
As a general recommendation, remove xf86-video-intel

[25100.658] (II) intel(0): SNA initialized with Alviso (gen3) backend

Also there's a very good chance that you need https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/mesa-amber/ instead of mesa for proper GL support (which your session may hard-rely on)
Edit, for the actual GPU:

lspci

We're still missing the full lightdm log and system journal.

but I wasn't willing to spend all day proofreading it again

How about you just upload the actual file? Why are we doing this via screenshots?
Correction: why are *you* doing this via screenshots? Cause I won't.

I've spent the past 3 hours trying to figure out out from the wikis

When I'm not at real work I'm doing yard work or trying to get my 5 hours of sleep at night.

spend all day proofreading

Re: Lightdm and huion issue [RESOLVED]

She can't get to the forum from the computer

?
If this is a system w/ network access, but w/o a GUI/browser, she can upload them using the tip in the first link below, basically

cat /var/log/lightdn/lightdm.log | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

will print a url where the log got uploaded.
Same goes for

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Re: Lightdm and huion issue [RESOLVED]

The journal post is an error from 0x0.st - most likely because the post exceeds some quota (what would happen if something spams the journal, the boot ran for many days or your forgot the "-b")
Since this is a boot-time issue, you probably forgot the "-b" (to filter the journal for the current boot)?

sudo journalctl -b > /tmp/journal.txt # redirect it into a file
du -h /tmp/journal.txt # check the journal size
cat /tmp/journal.txt | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st # try to upload the file

Re: Lightdm and huion issue [RESOLVED]

The journal is from a multi-usert.target boot - there's no attempt to start either lightdm nor lxde.
You'll have to pick an older one (eg. "sudo journalctl -b -1" for the one of the previous boot, "… -2" for the boot before that)

At some point you tried to "sudo Xorg" or similar and that left (probably) root owned files in your $HOME

find ~ -user root

to find all root owned files in your $HOME and

sudo chown twyla:twyla /home/twyla/.Xauthority

for ~/.Xauthority and all other files that should not belong to the root back to your user.

Thank you!  We are now out of the infinite login loop.  We just need to make lightdm turn on automatically when the computer starts, and get the drawing tablet to work again.

Re: Lightdm and huion issue [RESOLVED]

So I'm now gonna interpret

After a system upgrade, lightdm failed.  Had to use the rescue stick. Tried a fix that involved xorg

for you:
The system upgrade most likely triggered a race condition where lightdm failed because the GPU wasn't ready.
You wanted to follow the advise in the links I posted in #2 (either will do) but instead probably googled up some nonsense that got you to run "sudo Xorg" which is not "a fix" but instead spoiled the permissions.

=> Make sure to visit forementioned links to deal w/ the original lightdm problem and don't just casually sudo stuff unless you *know* that and why you'll require root permissions.

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.
