[solved]pacman does not recognize installed application. can't upgrade
I am using Calibre ebook library manager. When I encountered a bug, I tried to update the package with pacman. Even though I am using it at this moment, pacman does not list it as installed. I do
pacman -Syu calibre and the installation/upgrade of the packages and dependencies fails because they are found to already exist in the filesystem.
Is manually deleting the listed files then installing Calibre again the right method? Or can I tell pacman this package is already installed and just update it somehow?

Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded. edit: just realized the Calibre I was using was one I installed to /opt using the zip from the site. I removed it. But still can't re-do with pacman.

That would explain it.

If you had installed a program manually without using pacman, for example through make install, you have to remove/uninstall this program with all of its files.

sorry. I didn't realize that's how it was installed before I made the post. it turns out when I did that, the script made symlinks from /opt to those files listed. I manually removed the symlinks, and reinstalled with pacman. thanks.
