Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

Hello, since 2-3 weeks I have a problem that happens each time I open an image/video/website (across different software, brave, firefox, mpv etc). So when I see a part of video that is maybe dark or shady (idk how to reproduce) the corners of the screen start flashing (it keep increasing frequency and intensity of flashes until I pause the video or change website/tab).
The problem happens each day and more often with specific graphical interfaces, it seems to happen every time I open the facebook website for example (but only in the homepage) and so on a lot of cases.

I use xfce, xorg, picom, nvidia dkms, and the standard kernel.

This is my picom config: https://bin.disroot.org/?7b895cabcb17a4 … vAnVj29YrB

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

Please post your xorg log and the output of "xrandr -q", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
Does it also happen w/o picom?

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

xandr -q: https://bin.disroot.org/?7f1e98a1ebe120 … EeezQXfz4w
xorg log: https://bin.disroot.org/?ae11e3eb884982 … sPEsvbaYEp

It happens also without picom: I tried to open the facebook homepage, the screen started flashing, so I killed the picom process and it keeps flashing, so I killed browser, it stopped flashing, then I reopened browser in facebook homepage and it stared flashing again. The same problem in some specific dark scenes of movies using mpv and vlc (but using vlc it seems flashing differently)

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

What happens if you turn the monitor off and back on?
What if you drive it at a lower resolution (xrandr --output DP-2 --mode 1920x1200)?
What if you move the GPU to maximum performance in nvidia-settings?

I suspect either the backlight or the signal.

nothing, it keeps flashing

seth wrote:

it apparently stops flashing but I should use it in a lower resolution (losing icons positions etc) for at least a day to be sure that it will not flash anymore

seth wrote:

I have 3 PowerMizer settings: Auto, Adaptive, Prefer Maximum Performance. It was in auto, I set in maximum performance and nothing changed, it keeps flashing

I recorder a 25sec video using my smartphone (because the flashing can't be recorded via software, using OBS or SimpleScreenRecorder), the flashing start only with the facebook GUI (or in specific scenes of videos, maybe in dark scenes when the contrast is high).
The problem happens only in this arch linux install, I tested debian and windows without problems

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

Try to add and use this modeline

% cvt12 2560 1440 60 -b
# 2560x1440 @ 60.000 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 60.000 Hz; hsync: 88.860 kHz; pclk: 234.59 MHz
Modeline "2560x1440_60.00_rb2" 234.59 2560 2568 2600 2640 1440 1467 1475 1481 +hsync -vsync

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xrandr … esolutions

Also post your edid

edid-decode < /sys/class/drm/card0-DP-2/edid

You'll need https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/edid-decode-git and "nvidia-drm.modeset=1" in the kernel commandline.

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

Could you tell me more about the commands to use and how to put "nvidia-drm.modeset=1" in the kernel commandline? I also don't have cvt12 installed

Thanks for the patience

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters
You don't need cvt12, I posted the generated output - only the modeline itself is relevant.
But ftr, https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/cvt12-git

Edit: the leading "%" is the default zsh prompt, in case somebody wonders wink

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

edid-decode < /sys/class/drm/card0-DP-2/edid
returns:

zsh: file o directory non esistente: /sys/class/drm/card0-DP-2/edid

I also tried edid-decode < /sys/class/drm/card0/edid because /sys/class/drm has only card0 and renderD128 folders but the error is the same: missing folder

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

The EDID query fails because "nvidia-drm.modeset=1" is not in your kernel commandline.

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

This is not how this works, the kernel parameter activates a module parameter.
Please revisit https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters and add it for your bootloader.

Edit, @d.Alt : that's not gonna work, you'd have to re-load the module.

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

    DTD 1: 2560x1440 59.950550 Hz 16:9 88.787 kHz 241.500000 MHz (597 mm x 336 mm)
                 Hfront 48 Hsync 32 Hback 80 Hpol P
                 Vfront 3 Vsync 5 Vback 33 Vpol N

Is the standard cvt1 reduced blanking mode

% cvt12 2560 1440 60 -r
# 2560x1440 @ 60.000 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 59.951 Hz; hsync: 88.787 kHz; pclk: 241.50 MHz
Modeline "2560x1440_60.00_rb1" 241.50 2560 2608 2640 2720 1440 1443 1448 1481 +hsync -vsync

so there isn't mauch to gain (7MHz difference, little but maybe enough. The signal isn't even touching HBR, though.)

Has the flashing shown up w/ the 1920x1200 mode so far?
You could try
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Default nvidia Device"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "ModeValidation"	"AllowNonEdidModes"

It seems not, but I can't test a 1200p resolution for a long time because I can't use other software I usually use etc. I tested this resolution for around 10min and it seems the problem doesn't show up

Do you know if it's a problem that will be fixed? It's a kernel related problem? I'm not sure what is not working

When I create this file, LDM login manger doesn't run anymore at boot.

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

Sorry, I truncated the file:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Default nvidia Device"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "ModeValidation"	"AllowNonEdidModes"
EndSection

This might allow you to add the cvt12 modeline.

I missed

The problem happens only in this arch linux install, I tested debian and windows without problems

You're saying you're using "nvidia dkms" but you're using the regular kernel (and later on apparently the LTS kernel) which have pre-built modules.
Is this https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … idia-dkms/ or https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … open-dkms/ ?

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

I'm using nvidia-dkms https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … idia-dkms/ and the flashing problems show up in both kernels (normal and LTS)

Just a curious fact: if I open facebook in dark mode, the screen flashes, everytime, but if I open facebook using the darkmode of Dark Reader (popular browser addon), it never flashes, I don't know what is the logic

I correctly added the file, then I executed these commands without errors:

xrandr --newmode "2560x1440_60.00_rb2" 234.59 2560 2568 2600 2640 1440 1467 1475 1481 +hsync -vsync
xrandr --addmode DP-2 2560x1440_60.00_rb2
xrandr --output DP-2 --mode 2560x1440_60.00_rb2

the screen is correctly "refreshed" after the latest command, but the flashing problem is not solved

Re: Screen flashing along the edges in some websites or parts of videos

Feared so - the difference between CVT1 and CVT12 RB isn't much sad

Try to blacklist "snd_hda_codec_hdmi", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … acklisting - use the /bin/true method and make sure it's not loaded - obviously we're grasping straws now…

Thanks for your perfect and fast support these >2 days, maybe I'll wait a few weeks for an update that will fix this bug or I'll write again in the forum if the problem changes.
