I just ran a full system upgrade, my tty looks fine colour-wise, but once I startx, everything is tinted brown. I've checked and redshift isn't running and I don't have any weird settings I'd expect to do this. I also looked at the list of things which were in the pacman log and nothing stood out to me, except perhaps mesa -- I don't know why I have amdvlk installed since this is an intel machine -- but it's a bit baffling. Exiting X11 returns the colours (in the tty) to normal so it's not a problem with the monitor itself, just X11.
Here's the pacman log for the upgrade in case there are any obvious packages

1. do you run a compositor (picom)?
2. does "xcalib -c" correct the colors (temporarily)?
3. does the tint show up on screenshots?
Offline
1. yes, I run picom (although killing it didn't help)
2. yes, xcalib -c temporarily clears the issue (in the X11 session)
3. no, screenshots don't show the issue
Offline
2. yes, xcalib -c temporarily clears the issue (in the X11 session)
redshift - or something like redshift - alters the gamma ramps.
How long does the temporary clearance hold? The entire session? You might run redshift in oneshot mode (somewhere in your startup scripts)
Offline
Clearance seems to hold the entire session. Even with redshift turned on, if I (via the redshift-gtk gui) temporarly disable redshift the display returns to normal which _did not_ happen before using `xcalib -c`. I had tried disabling redshift entirely in systemctl both user and system level (just in case) and it didn't help. I don't run it anywhere else in my startup scripts, i3 config, etc..
Offline
We should then maybe look at your init scripts.
See whether the same happens w/ eg. an openbox session (to figure whether it's i3 specific or a more general thing) and post your startup scripts and also
systemctl --user list-units --type=service
Offline
I modified my `.xinitrc` to launch `bspwm` instead of `i3` and it was still tinted brown.

I did notice that redshift-gtk is failing to start, so despite the fact that I don't think it is causing the issue (as previously mentioned), the log might provide some clues?
I'd start by disabling the service - in doubt it starts, alters the gamma ramps, wets itself and leaves some mess behind…
It looks a bit like it's deperate for a systray (and perhaps simply too early)
Offline
Sorry if this is a silly question as I've not used it myself, but if it's apparent that the unwanted color change is coming from redshift, and resetting the color to a default gives results you like, why do you have redshift installed / enabled in the first place?

Offline
Iff this is triggered by redshift (not yet identitfied), it's likely simply misbehaving.
redshift otherwise is one usable option to either color correct a tooblue™ panel (notebook panels usually don't have built-in color settings and are tooblue™ because that makes them look brighter and more expensive…) or to simply color-adjust the panel over the day.
Offline
To be clear: after resetting the colours with xcalib -c, I run redshift just fine and, throughout the afternoon / evening, it gradually reddens the display. When I get home later I'll try to uninstall redshift to see if there's somewhere I'm calling it that is strange and causing this weird setting of the gamma ramps.
As per the below, i had already tried disabling the service but the problem persisted.
I had tried disabling redshift entirely in systemctl both user and system level (just in case) and it didn't help. I don't run it anywhere else in my startup scripts, i3 config, etc..
Offline
Can confirm: after uninstalling redshift I rebooted. X session was still brown when I started it. Had to run xcalib -c to fix it. Pretty sure it's not redshift at this point.
Offline
So let's see your session scripts - perhaps especially because of
(I have some issues with some of my scripts at the moment.)
Offline
When I say there are problems with them, it's because I have an issue with my backup and mail-download scripts, which is the bulk of my init scripts. The only other thing which is initialised graphically is picom.
Strangely enough, I've now uninstalled redshift completely but when I woke my laptop up from sleep this morning it was back to being brown-tinted, so it feels like *something* is setting the gamma ramps actively I just can't work out what it is from the process list.
Offline
So let's see your session scripts

I found the problem (quite by mistake) when I noticed that it happened most often when unplugging my laptop from my screen. This triggered autorandr, and, basically, the problem was that some of my autorandr profiles had gamma definitions in their configuration (maybe I had saved them when redshift was active, I'm not sure). Removing the gamma configuration from the autorandr files solved the problem.
