Re: Why people don't like xfce (apparently)

I pronounced it "ex eff cee ee", as in, each letter seperately. Why would you pronounce it any other way? "exfecee"?! Please....

Haha, that's hilarious. I've never thought of pronouncing it like that. I've always done what others have, and just said the letters themselves. Pretty funny, gave me a good laugh....

Re: Why people don't like xfce (apparently)

I hate this almost as much as I hate people who try to make up crap like adding up the digits to remember telephone numbers or by using the letters on the keypad to make a word. It's just retarded and a waste of time... Just call it what it is.

As for the mouse... Grow up. ZOMG RAT!!! EEEEE!!! Seriously... The mouse is a logo...
What is KDE's logo? A gear?! HAH!
What about Gnome's? A foot?! HAH!

Actually... I know people who love the mouse. Actually... I like the mouse. Does anyone even understand the symbolism besides me? Mice are small and fast. Feet? They smell. Gears? Old and clunky. But that's just me... Each to his own.

All in all... Grow up. It's just a logo, and just a name. Xfce has been around far too long to screw everything up by changing the name. Does anybody here even know why it's called Xfce besides me?

Re: Why people don't like xfce (apparently)

X-F-C-E. Perhaps the idiot who wrote the "article" is the one who's full of feces? I'm sorry, but the rest of the world (that is those of us who aren't little girlsies who play with dolls) could care less what it's called, as long as it isn't "May Hitler trink the blood of thy jews 4.4"

I think a lot of people see XFCE as not being good because they haven't tried the latest version. The older versions of XFCE aren't that great IMHO.

XFCE, XFCE! What's in a name? That which we call a desktop environment by any other word would be as fricken sweet!

How is Xfce pronounced and what does it mean?

Ecks Eff See Eee. The name Xfce originally stood for XForms Common Environment, but since then, Xfce was rewritten twice and doesn't use XForms toolkit anymore. The name survived, but is no longer capitalized as "XFce" , but "Xfce". Currently the acronym doesn't stand for anything. (Suggestion: X Freakin' Cool Environment)

Re: Why people don't like xfce (apparently)

I dont like gnome / xfce since they're lacking on network functionality.

The implementation of konqueror is awful when it comes to network folders (ssh, samba etc). Maybe i was just too dumb to find those functions in xfce / gnome.

If so, and gnome / gedit can open files over ssh (and save them back), then for me gnome is ready to use. In XFCE i havn't found any network folder option.
That's the real reason holding me at KDE at the moment.

mkay ...
what does network connectivity have to do with the name of a desktop environment?

and if thunar doesn't have the network facility doen yet, then what does that have to do with xfce as a de?
why don't you just use konqueror?

That's not the craziest thing. It's that he revived THIS post, when there are tons of other posts were somebody to be bored to tears could have been revived instead (not to support revival).

But I'll address STiAT anyhow: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FUSE_(Linux)

Re: Why people don't like xfce (apparently)

Heh - I say Xfice.

XFCE annoyances:
1. I can't remove the Home, Trash and Filesystem Icons from the desktop
2. I can never get the keyboard shortcuts to work properly. But I think that's because they conflict with other, possibly application, shortcuts.

Re: Why people don't like xfce (apparently)

I've read the documentation. I cannot find it.

It's not in man xfdesktop. And there isn't a guide for 4.4 according to the website. The file is in ~/.config/xfce4/xfdesktop/icons.desktop.screen0 or something similar as I recall. But manually editing that doesn't help.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Why people don't like xfce (apparently)

I tried out XFCE but stayed away from it because of the annoyance that I could not get all the shortcuts to work, which I like to use. XFCE and GNOME do not seem to like shortcuts based on the <Super> - Key. KDE has no problem here and hence is my favourite desktop environment, although I strongly prefer the GTK+ 2.0 - looks.

Re: Why people don't like xfce (apparently)

re: ..<Super>..
i don't know about xfwm, but metacity handles them perfectly ... last time i tried to use the gnome gui to add shortcuts was back in gnome 2.16 and it sucked so i just add then manually through the gconf editor, and via python for global kb shortcuts in apps like listen or exaile ... then use python again to erase them on exit ...

and as to the issue of these issues beign the reason for not using a clearly favoured de is silly ...
...[noriko@Lux64  ~]# y xbindkeys
1 [1;32mextra/xbindkeys 1.8.2-1
xbindkeys allows you to launch shell commands with your keyboard or your mouse under X Window
2 aur/xbindkeys_config 0.1.3-1
XBindKeys_Config is an easy to use gtk program for configuring Xbindkeys.
==>  Enter n° (separated by blanks, or a range) of packages to be installed

xbindkeys works well as in my experience as well ...

also, can u please just start another thread on this issue?
this has nothign to do with ""''Why people don't like xfce (apparently)''""

You're right, I'm not sure why it's not in the xfdesktop manual and is only in the README. But here you go: http://wiki.xfce.org/faq#desktop_manager
