No sound on Firefox

Sound is not working for any multimedia provided by Firefox 108.0.2. Sound files are played when downloaded and system sound is fine as well. I only use uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger addons.

Re: No sound on Firefox

While having something in firefox open that should provide audio? What's your

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

in that case and did you make sure to completely stop and properly restart any/all firefox processes after the update?

Re: No sound on Firefox

[xxx@xxx ~]$ sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
[sudo] Passwort für xxx:
                     BEN. PID ZUGR. BEFEHL
/dev/snd/controlC0: xxx 816 F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D3p: xxx 816 F...m pulseaudio

After the update I would assume that there were no Firefox processes running as I always close everything before shutting down.

I tried safe-mode and got following output:

[xxx@xxx ~]$ firefox -safe-mode
[GFX1-]: glxtest: VA-API test failed: failed to initialise VAAPI connection.

Re: No sound on Firefox

Don't assume, check, sometimes firefox pseudo crashes and leaves a process behind even when closing windows.

pgrep firefox

(this of course also happens if you rebooted) did you try disabling the extensions? There's no indication at all your firefox is playing anything back, accidentally hit the firefox internal mute tab? Make sure the players of whatever you are looking at aren't set to auto-mute? If you check the about:support page, what's under the Audio section?

Re: No sound on Firefox

[xxx@xxx ~]$ pgrep firefox
7791

I used the firefox-rebuilt function and added the addons again to no avail.
Tabs are not muted.
____________

What I also found is, that there is no sound when I change the system sound level, usually there was a sound indication the actual sound level. This could be a sign it's not only a firefox issue.

Re: No sound on Firefox

I restored an older Timeshift backup and updated again and sound is back!

Unfortunately, the restore procedure implemented a grub re-install, so I have to fix my dual boot, but this should be doable.

Thanks for you help anyhow!

Re: No sound on Firefox

Mozilla Firefox 117.0.1

Happen to me the same, Firefox cant play any sound, nor youtube and nor other website.

Somehow what i work for me its to change the quality of the video to 360p and the sound works again... not only for youtube but for firefox..
