I am having this problem since more than a year and it occurs quite randomly. The 2. issue is my main problem since a long time and I tried a lot of things but nothing really worked.
1. When there is a travelling in the video (I notice it usually more in an anime), I can see the different frames; as if some frames are skipped and it looks jerky (is this the right word?).
2. Sometime when I pause then unpause, the video-audio isn't synced anymore and the video is delayed, then there is several jumps in the video and it goes back to normal after a dozen seconds. Usually I just go back in time a few seconds and the AV sync is resolved.
My config:
– mpv from the official repos on an Asus laptop
– archlinux with i3-gaps-rounded (and before I had i3-gaps and already had the problem)
– GTX950M with the nvidia driver (and not nouveau)
What I tried:
– I tried mpv -v but nothing special was shown when the 1. issue happened (frame-skipping in travelling)
– I tried --no-config, as well as with several other configs: nothing changed
– Sometime the 2. thing doesn't happen during few videos, sometime it happens a lot. It is quite random and I cannot really predict it. Each time I want to show it to someone or reproduce it, it doesn't happen
– I checked in htop, either the memory nor the CPU seems to be overused. I don't know where the problem could come from. Maybe the graphic card/driver? Maybe the mpv config (but it shouldn't since I tried without config)?
– I managed to capture with mpv -v the 2. issue and this was reported:
[cplayer] Still buffering (buffer went from 0% -> 68%) [0.683333s].
[cplayer] Still buffering (buffer went from 68% -> 42%) [0.426667s].
[cplayer] End buffering (waited 0.626536 secs) [1.108667s].
[cplayer]
[cplayer] Audio/Video desynchronisation detected! Possible reasons include too slow
[cplayer] hardware, temporary CPU spikes, broken drivers, and broken files. Audio
[cplayer] position will not match to the video (see A-V status field).
I don't know if one can actually help me with such vague explanations and such random problem but I really start to be fed up with this problem, and I really don't know where to start.

1. is judder / 2. heavily depends on the video container and whether it's eg. via a network protocol.
For 1. try "mpv -vo=gpu --video-sync=display-resample", for 2. you'll have to elaborate on the video source, but "still buffering" sounds a lot like a slow source (network, optical drive, etc.)
Online
For 1. I tried "mpv -vo=gpu --video-sync=display-resample" but I still see the judder as usually.
For 2. so my video source is always the files I have on my sdb1: it's an internal DDR (not SSD) of 1TB I use only for storage (my main system is on sda3, a SSD). It's usually mkv files from 1GB to 2GB (25min) in 1080p encoded in HEVC/x265 or x264, with FLAC or AAC audio files. I don't know if this can be of any help for you; but thank you for the quick reply!

I was mostly interested in the video FPS
A 29.970fps video should cause rare to no judder on a 60Hz output.
What happens if you kill picom?
mpv -vo=gpu
The "--video-sync=display-resample" part is however really important to mitigate the judder.
Since you complained about the audio, try also whether "mpv -ao null" has any impact on the judder (it'll obviously "fix" the audio problems only in a very cynical sense
Online
Following on from Seth's suggestions, if null AO works for you, try with `--pulse-latency-hacks yes` or `--ao alsa`. Pulse AO has been major drag on video performance in recent months in my experience.

Okay, now that I understood better what you wanted to know, I actually showed you the input with an old 720p anime, so I took something more recent where I noticed the problem and here it's more 23,9fps; which maybe changes something?

So I tried without picom (and the vo=gpu+video-sync). There seem to be less judder, but I have horizontal screen tearing problem, that I remembered also having struggeled with, and resolved it by adding "backend="glx"; vsync=true;" in picom if I remember correctely.
I tried with "mpv-ao null" and, sadly, it doesn't seem to change anything with the judder.
Offline
Judder (vsync on) or tearing (vsync off) will be inavoidable when playing videos that don't fit the output refresh rate, but resampling the video is meant to deal with that.
Since you keep posting "mpv --vo=gpu" I'll therefore re-stress that
The "--video-sync=display-resample" part is however really important to mitigate the judder.
"--vo=gpu" does actually nothing (as it's the default and you didn't change that, I just needed to ensure it was used, because resampling doesn't work w/ all output modes)
Also please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
Online
Since you keep posting "mpv --vo=gpu" I'll therefore re-stress …
My bad, each time I was talking about "mpv --vo=gpu" I was using the whole command with the "--video-sync" but I omitted it in the report here; sorry I wasn't exhaustive enough. So yes, even though I used the "--video-sync=display-resample" the judder didn't seemed fully gone.
Here you have my Xorg.0.log. I don't know exactely what you need so I post the full log but it's a bit long:

but it's a bit long
Naaahh, that's harmless.
This is a hybrid graphics system, but you're not trying to prime-run mpv, are you?
You might be hitting https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xse … issues/928 ( mentioned in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … stallation )

What do you mean with hybrid graphics system, what is hybrid?
As far as I know I'm not prime-running mpv, I just use it normally I guess(?) Sorry, I still don't understand much although I'm running Arch since a few years.
You might be hitting https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xse … issues/928 ( mentioned in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … stallation )
About this: I'm using "nvidia" and not "mesa" as graphic driver and don't have "xf86-video-intel" installed, so you say I could be hitting the same problem although I have a different config?
By the way, I noticed now the Vsync Ratio and Vsync Jitter during watching. Maybe, this can be of any use to you.

Your system looks like a "muxless" Optimus setup, i.e., hybrid graphics. The intel card is connected to the outputs, while the nvidia card is "floating".
The vsync jitter does not show up if modesetting is used to just copy frames rendered by the nvidia card (with prime sync enabled). I have a couple of machines like this with various nvidia cards and playback is perfect. You might want to do this (if battery life isn't an issue because nvidia will be horribly inefficient heat and power wise).
Otherwise, just power off the nvidia (950 is not particularly fast) using something like nvidia-xrun or optimus manager and use modesetting with picom glx+vsync. I also use this when on battery and get super efficient perfect playback on said laptops. HTH.
I couldn't tell what is your setup. Could you elaborate?

According to the xorg log the OPs X11 server is running on the IGP/modesetting and the OP is unaware of the optimus condition or prime-run.
glxinfo -B
prime-run glxinfo -B #

No. With all likelihood you're running *exactly* the configuration in the bugreport, incl. one of the reportedly affected IGP generation.
Edit: and your jitter findings match that bug precisely as well.

– main partition on 128GB SSD and most of my files on internal DDR of 1TB
(Is that enough?)
So I think I understood what MUXless is and hybrid graphics. I read some parts of NVIDIA Optimus' and PRIME' wiki article but I don't really understand everything I read. I tried to activate the prime synchronisation with this command 「xrandr --output HDMI-2 --set "PRIME Synchronization" 1」I found on this part https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME# … ronization but it gave me the following error.
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 11 (RRQueryOutputProperty)
Serial number of failed request: 36
Current serial number in output stream: 36
According to the xorg log the OPs X11 server is running on the IGP/modesetting and the OP is unaware of the optimus condition or prime-run.
glxinfo -B
prime-run glxinfo -B #
So I tried these two commands, the first gives me the output below, but "prime-run" is not found on my system. I haven't found why it isn't, if it's normal or if I needed some packages.

The vsync jitter does not show up if modesetting is used to just copy frames rendered by the nvidia card (with prime sync enabled). […] You might want to do this.
Otherwise, just power off the nvidia using something like nvidia-xrun or optimus manager and use modesetting with picom glx+vsync.
How could I achieve the two different solutions concretely? As I said, I don't understand much about it.
Again, thanks a lot to both of you for the time you spend helping me!

I think the easiest way would be to try with Intel only. Optionally in this case the nvidia card can be disabled and powered down to reduce power consumption and heat using either optimus manager or nvidia-xrun. Your nvidia card is too old to support the new dynamic power management features, so powering it off completely is the way to go if you do not need it, at least for testing. However, it is not necessary to disable the nvidia card for the steps below, as long as it not used in any way. This is the case if you delete all config files and also remove the intel ddx. So, only use modesetting.
For the intel only case, keep using modesetting, but use picom with:
glx backend.
vsync.
Do not unredirect full screen windows.
Set frame opacity = 1.0 (otherwise there is an issue with mpv).
The picom default configuration documents these options, so just set them by editing the file. I usually turn off all transparency and fading effects. Next, try running a video using:
mpv --video-sync=display-resample --fullscreen=yes --hwdec=auto file.mkv
hwdec is optional but useful if supported. In addition to the OSD, the command line output for mpv shows the number of mistimed frames which cause jitter as DS:x/y where x is the ratio between your screen's refresh rate and the video frame rate, while y is the number of mistimed frames which is what we are interested in. Ideally x should be an integer for perfect motion and indeed I run my screens at 2x the frame rate whenever possible while playing video. y should not be increasing with time; a small number of mistimed frames while starting up, resizing the mpv window, or transitioning to or from full screen mode is normal.

The OP *is* effectively running on the intel chip only.
So, only use modesetting.
The modesetting driver is claimed to cause the jitter spikes.
but use picom with
So I tried without picom (and the vo=gpu+video-sync). There seem to be less judder, but I have horizontal screen tearing problem, that I remembered also having struggeled with, and resolved it by adding "backend="glx"; vsync=true;" in picom if I remember correctely.

Install xf86-video-intel, restart X11 and see whether that has impact on the situation.
Post an updated xorg log.

I have the feeling it seems better for the juter when watching scenes with travelling, but I'm still not sure if it is resolved.
Do the Vsync Ratio and Vsync Jitter graphics (shown when "i" in opened mpv) show the number of frame skipped; or is there any way to fact check if the jitter still happens? Because just by feeling isn't really objective.
I managed to run prime-run; here is the output of "prime-run glxinfo -B"

It also seems better, maybe resolved with prime-run but as I said above, I'd like to fact check it.

No. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jitter
It's the deviation from the ideal.
The lower the number, the better. The bigger, the more visible judder you'll get.
Comparing them among the drivers should™ tell you whether xf86-video-intel improved anything here.
Online
Apparently it's not really resolved, I still see judder when there is a fast travelling (when I said earlier that I didn't notice anything, it's because it was a slow travelling).
I will check tomorrow by watching on another computer if this particular judder on the fast travelling comes from the video itself or not.
– without "prime-run" (and with vo=gpu video-sync=display-resample fullscreen=yes hwdec=auto), the Vsync Jitter stabilises at 0.1.
– with "prime-run", the Vsync is at approx 0.0 but goes evey 5 seconds up to 0.2.
I don't know which would be the best in this case.
I uninstalled xf86-video-intel to try without and
– without "prime-run" it fluctuates a lot between 0.8 and 0.2
– with "prime-run" it seems to stabilize between 0.27 and 0.35 or even 0.4.
So the driver xf-86-video-intel seems to have improved the situation, but
– I still have judder
– I don't know if it's better with or without "prime-run"
Offline
prime-run causes an indirection and depends on prime sync to work (which can not be relied on), so you can skip those tests for the moment.
Worst case is that mpv doesn't even know the actual vblank signal.
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ … udder+test
If you have https://archlinux.org/packages/community/any/yt-dlp/ installed you can play a video url (quote it) w/ mpv
mpv -ytdl-raw-options='format="mp4,best[height<1081]"' "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys5MqjzPTag"
mpv -ytdl-raw-options='format="mp4,best[height<1081]"' -vo=gpu --video-sync=display-resample "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys5MqjzPTag"
nb. that 24fps is 24fps, it will never have the smoothness of 48fps (the hobbit movies, there're also test videos on yt) or even 60fps.
Online
I will check tomorrow by watching on another computer if this particular judder on the fast travelling comes from the video itself or not.
I checked on another desktop on Windows with more performances with several programs: this particular travelling comes from the encoding/bitrate of the video.
So this issue might be resolved.
If you have https://archlinux.org/packages/community/any/yt-dlp/ installed you can play a video url (quote it) w/ mpv
I have yt-dlp and I have tried, I mainly notice the faster horizontal lines that judder a little bit; maybe it is because of the 24fps. I'm wondering if the 2kbps bitrate of my file is also a factor of juddering.
I tried both with and without "--video-sync=display-resample" and I don't feel any difference. I will still keep using this config because it can only be better with.
Do you think that this kind of issue can be soften by using some shaders or specific configs?
Anyway, the remaining unresolved things of the issue 1. seem to be linked to the files, so I guess this case is closed(?)
About the issue 2., it didn't happen again so I guess it's resolved. As I said at the beginning, I don't know how to trigger it. So in the worst case if it happens again in the next month I might come back here.
Again, a lot of thanks for your time and help with this.

Hopefully, we're approaching the end of my wits
I'm wondering if the 2kbps bitrate of my file is also a factor of juddering.
This is an mp2 video w/ 2048 bits per second???
Sure it's not 2Mbps? That'd be more in line w/ eg. transcoded dvd video and is not a problem for any kind of modern hardware at all.
The compression (esp. of an Animé) might have cut the fps in half, though (Animés are often not 24fps anyway or only parts (foreground action) is - because somebody had to draw all of that
Googled up https://gist.github.com/phiresky/4bfcfbbd05b3c2ed8645 for you.
I've no idea whether this works or deletes your video, though.
The youtube test videos should give you a reasonable reflection of your system configuration.
Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

My bad, it's a 2 641 kb/s Bit rate, so 2Mbps.

Yup, obviously the animation and style implies that it's not 100% fluid; but in the travelling (or at least what I meant by "travelling"), it's just a fix image that moves from right to left, so here, it's not an animation but rather a compression problem as you said (since it's not my mpv config anymore).

So I see a little judder on it, but I guess it can't be helped, I watched the same video on the other desktop and it looked same so it should be due to the 24fps.
Case closed!
