iwd connection failed

New install, just booting a live disk, following the arch wiki, I keep getting 'operation failed' after entering the passphrase, other computers with arch work, wifi signal is strong, other linux OS's such as pop and EOS do not work either, but windows will.  It's the mediatek MT7921 wireless lan card, which appears to be supported.

rfkill unblock all
systemctl start iwd
iwctl
[iwd] station wlan0 connect SSID name
'operation failed'

with no further explanation

do not work either, but windows will

3rd link below. Mandatory.
Disable it (it's NOT the BIOS setting!) and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

lspci -k
rfkill
ip a
sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

solution from linked thread was

No issues so far! Thank you seth for all of the help, I greatly appreciate it. To those stumbling upon this post, this was the solution:
Update BIOS, then set the mem_sleep_default kernel parameter to 'deep'."

I dont really understand what I'd set to 'deep', as I'm just booting the arch iso from usb, not using standby. Windows hibernate/fastboot is disabled

Also to note, for some reason the fan goes to max and cpu temp goes to 80c while in arch

this is the laptop, looks fully supported https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Lenovo … X_(14ARH7)

Re: iwd connection failed

The thread was just for context and to highlight that there might be acpi related issues.
Please post the outputs of the commands from #2, we need to get this out of "its does nots works lol" territory.

for some reason the fan goes to max and cpu temp goes to 80c while in arch

When? How? When sleeping the system? Generally?

sometimes happens during sleeping into wakeup from windows, happens while booting arch and just in a terminal with no cpu load, often happens in bios

Re: iwd connection failed

There're two Wifi NICs, MT and ATH and both result in

Mar 30 20:00:24 archiso kernel: wlan1: associate with xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (try 1/3)
Mar 30 20:00:24 archiso kernel: wlan1: associated
Mar 30 20:00:30 archiso systemd-networkd[610]: wlan1: DHCPv4 address 192.168.0.60/24, gateway 192.168.0.1 acquired from 192.168.0.1
Mar 30 20:00:34 archiso kernel: wlan0: associate with xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (try 1/3)
Mar 30 20:00:34 archiso kernel: wlan0: associated
Mar 30 20:00:39 archiso systemd-networkd[610]: wlan0: DHCPv4 address 192.168.0.85/24, gateway 192.168.0.1 acquired from 192.168.0.1

The "operation failed" because you're most likely already associated at this point.

Other than using two NICs and getting two leases there's no hard indication of problems, though the atheros one:

Also both seem to be usb? (dongles?)
Why when and how do you have iwctl issues and how does that relate to you having already connected on two NICs?

sometimes happens during sleeping into wakeup from windows, happens while booting arch and just in a terminal with no cpu load, often happens in bios

The CPU spikes (how do you determine that?) in the BIOS??

Don't believe, check.

=> Why do you have two WiFi nics?
Also both seem to be usb? (dongles?)
Why when and how do you have iwctl issues and how does that relate to you having already connected on two NICs?

sometimes happens during sleeping into wakeup from windows, happens while booting arch and just in a terminal with no cpu load, often happens in bios

The CPU spikes (how do you determine that?) in the BIOS??
3rd link below. Mandatory.
Don't believe, check.

Wlan0 is the bult in one, I connected the dongle (wlan1) so I could transfer logs.

The error comes up only for wlan0, the issue is the built in mediatek wifi card, wlan0. When using only wlan0 I can not get any connection or association after the failure. Nothing will ping either.

I can feel it heating up and the fans on max, then booting into windows I can see the temp on open hardware monitor.

I did check, hibernate is completely disabled. No fast start or hibernate options available in windows power menus. No hibernate file either. I also distinctly disabled it when setting it up.

Re: iwd connection failed

Please skip the full quotes, there's no need for that on a forum and it bloats the thread.

I'll stress that you did in fact associate and got a lease on wlan0, there's no indication in the journal that there's any problem w/ the mediatek chip.

Remove the atheros dongle, try to connect w/ the mediatek chip, dump the outputs of

ip a
sudo journalctl -b

before connecting to the network by other means and post those outputs.

If the CPU heats up while you're only in the UEFI, you should look out for a firmware update, but that's unrelated to the topic of this thread.
