how do I change the source of the icons?

They're in /mozilla/dist/branding/. I'll just go ahead and post the final lines in the PKGBUILD for Firefox, and as you'll see Thunderbird follows a similar fashion. If any of the mods think this isn't kosher I'll edit them right out. Remember that you also have to add that line to the mozconfig file!

  cd ${startdir}/pkg/opt/mozilla/lib && ln -sf firefox-${pkgver} firefox

  rm -rf ${startdir}/pkg/opt/mozilla/bin/defaults

  mkdir -p ${startdir}/pkg/usr/share/applications
  mkdir -p ${startdir}/pkg/usr/share/pixmaps
  convert ${startdir}/src/mozilla/dist/branding/default.xpm ${startdir}/pkg/usr/share/pixmaps/firefox.png
  install -m644 ${startdir}/src/firefox.desktop ${startdir}/pkg/usr/share/applications/
  install -m644 ${startdir}/src/firefox-safe.desktop ${startdir}/pkg/usr/share/applications/

  mkdir -p ${startdir}/pkg/opt/mozilla/lib/firefox/chrome/icons/default
  install -m644 ${startdir}/src/mozilla/dist/branding/default.xpm ${startdir}/pkg/opt/mozilla/lib/firefox/chrome/icons/default/
  install -m644 ${startdir}/src/mozilla/dist/branding/default.xpm ${startdir}/pkg/opt/mozilla/lib/firefox/icons/

You can find it in the mozilla-firefox CVS attic folder:

Tango! Not only does it use (somewhat) standard Icons, but the tabs use your GTK theme. I don't have a link handy but it's in their official repository.

winestripe is pretty good, too. it's the 1.5x theme ported to 2.x.

Re: Firefox 2.0

I haven't been real pleased with it so far.  It has an annoying habit of maxing out my CPU when I leave it on too long; I don't really like any of the alternatives, though.
