I have an old Acer Switch 10e (aka Acer Aspire SW3-013) I'm trying to bring back to life with Linux. Everything seems to be running quite well considering the meager specs, but the wifi is an issue. In my home I have a visible guest wifi network (same SSID for 2.4 and 5 GHz) and a hidden SSID for our internal devices (also same SSID for 2.4 and 5 GHz). The guest network is on WPA2 and the hidden network is WPA2/WPA3.
The laptop can connect to my phone hotspot no problem but trying to connect to the router networks I get an error about "Authentication Required. Passwords or encryption keys are required to access the wireless network", but showing the password it is clearly correct.
I tried disabling the 5GHz part of the guest network and now I can connect to it, but I really want the device on the internal network (and I'd prefer to keep the 5GHz network). Turing off the 5GHz on the hidden network I am still not able to connect.
I believe the wifi device is a Realtek RTL8723BS.

You don't need to turn off the 5GHz AP, you can connect to the 2.4GHz BSSID (MAC)
1. What do you use to connect to the WiFi? wpa_supplicant, iwd or some high-level frontend (networkmanager)?
2. Don't believe, check/post the output of "lspci -k"
3. If you've been using some high-level abstraction, try to connect to using iwd or wpa_supplicant directly for some realistic error messages.
If you're using NM, it's actually very chatty and there'll be much more info in the system journal
For wpa_supplicant specifically, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wpa_su … ess_points
Offline
I am using NetworkManager. I have tried making the connection both through the Gnome settings GUI and nmcli. My issue sounds like this one (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … t_provided) but the strategies don't seem to be helping.
I'm not at the machine right now, but I'll get the lspci -k and try wpa_supplicant when I am.
Offline
NM defaults to wpa_supplciant as backend and sets it to verbose mode, so inspecting the journal might suffice already.
Offline
Ah, good to know.

Here is the journal trimmed to the last few hours where I definitely had issues connecting to the private network.

That's just the NM entries, the interesting parts are likely wpa_supplicant and kernel messages… as your device has a broadcom chip on apparently MMC
(Broadcom has its own page in teh wiki because it's teh worst possible WiFi chip - this is gonna be fun
If you need me to take a look at it, we'll need the unfiltered segment.
You're still changing the MAC for scanning btw.

looks interesting and the WiFi NIC not being renamed indicates that iwd is at least installed.

Weird, I added the conf.d file as described in the wiki.
Also weird is that my wifi device has stopped showing up in the Gnome GUI and the CLI. I don't think I changed anything since I posted last.

iwd at least isn't enabled (installing it alone will prevent the renaming)
Maybe there's also a race condition wrt.
Also weird is that my wifi device has stopped showing up in the Gnome GUI and the CLI.
Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

And yeah, the MAC randomization I changed was
/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/wifi_rand_mac.conf

I also tried adding those lines to the main NetworkManager.conf file but that still didn't seem to help (though maybe that is more related to my wifi device not showing up anymore).

The "good-old-private" AP tells you to GFY, do you use a MAC filter on the AP?
Offline
MAC filter is disabled on both 2.4 and 5 GHz
Offline
Okay, I got it connected briefly. I had previously set my private network to WPA2/3 on 2.4 GHz and WPA3 only on 5 GHz (I'm not totally sure why - I think that ended up solving some other problem I had months ago). I tried setting them both to WPA2 only and I was finally able to connect. While setting up the connection, I told the Gnome WiFi tool to use WPA/WPA2. I have now set the AP to WPA2 and WPA3 for both 2.4 GHz and 5GHz (leaving the laptop's connection as WPA/WPA2) and the connection is failing again.
I'd prefer to keep WPA3 at least as an option on this network.

Re. iwd, you want me to switch to that to see if it fixes things? Or to get different diagnostic output?
Here is the connection file as it stands now, pre-iwd (I was just trying to re-add the connection as WPA3 in case that helped, but it did not).

iwd did not seem to fix things.
Those wpa_supplicant links sound promising but I'm not sure where to enter those settings when I'm using NetworkManager.
I also noticed that the settings include setting 802.11w to required and there is a command at the bottom of the page to check compatibility. When I run the command I get no output, so maybe my card doesn't support 802.11w? In OpenWRT it 802.11w is set to optional.
Offline
For the mixed mode, set
- key-mgmt=sae
+ key-mgmt=WPA-PSK-SHA256
I've no idea whether the mixed mode requires 802.11w, but if so and the NIC doesn't support it you'll be limited to pure WPA2 with this device.
Offline
Changing out that line in my .nmconnection file does not seem to be helping. I think my solution will be to add a new SSID that does WPA2 only. Thanks for all your help seth!
