Middle button emulation has worked on my (over 10yo) laptop for years with no problem - suddenly since updating it last week this has stopped working!
I changed the regular kernel for the LTS one to work around another problem with not waking from sleep properly, but this hasn't helped the trackpad buttons.
So, libinput has been updated from 1.21.0-1 -> 1.23.0-1 and xf86-input-libinput 1.2.1-1 -> 1.3.0-1
Libinput says the middle button emulation is "n/a". I don't know what it said before the update because there wasn't an issue.

Are you maybe looking at the wrong device?
xinput listI've tried adding a code snippet to an xorg.d conf file
Please post that and the resulting xorg log.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I am looking at the correct device. The alternatives are the rubber track-stick thingy, which has it's own buttons with an actual middle button (I just never use it, and since this problem found it doesn't work very well anyway), the virtual XTEST pointer and core pointer. It's definitely the trackpad, which has 2 buttons.
Right, now to try and find what I added to xorg configuration, since I deleted it when it didn't work...
And here it is. From https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=107490 I originally copied (slightly edited) the whole snippet to a new file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, but I just tried it again adding only
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "on" to 30-touchpad.conf.
After I restart X, xorg.conf shows me (skipping all the video stuff) :

After I restart X, xorg.conf shows me (skipping all the video stuff) :
Don't do that, post the entire xorg log, the entire output of xinput and the entire xorg configlet you created.
The "Emulate3Buttons" option doesn't show up in the xorg log, ie. it's not parsed or a match condition doesn't apply to anything - or you "skipped" it.
Edit: If you copypasta'd 'MatchIsPointer "on"", that's obviously wrong in this context.
