[FIXED] Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider on Steam
Neither are working now. Tomb Raider (the more recent one, not the original) silently quits, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider says "Shadow of the Tomb Raider cannot be started while Steam is not running".
Clearly, Steam is running (I'm launching it from my library). My first thoughts were NVidia drivers and my GPU, but I've swapped out my dual GTX 1070 for a single RTX 3090, with the same problem.
Google has been no help. Most of the so called fixes involve installing a (legally suspect) mod on Windows, which of course I'm not using, or various suggestions such as deleting the appcache folder, not of which make a blind bit of difference.
Other Steam games (Cyberpunk 2077, and a couple of lesser known titles), and a locally installed game which failed using wine, but runs a treat when I add the local version to my Steam library (Trackmania Nations Forever), but neither of the TR games will run. They used to, and if I boot to Windows (something I rarely do) they run no problem via Steam on Windows.
Both games legally bought and paid for.
System fully up to date (testing repos).
If I wasn't already bald, I'd be tearing my hair out by now.
Any ideas where to go from here?

EDIT: Before anyone asks, I've re-installed Steam, and dumped at least Shadow in Steam and re-installed.
EDIT2: And yes, I've tried various compatibility settings in Steam.

Can't speak for Shadow of the Tomb Raider as I haven't played it, but I have run the Tomb Raider reboot from 2013.
Under compatibility, are you running it via proton or are you running it natively (i.e. the 'Steam Linux Runtime')?
The first thing I'd do is run steam directly from a terminal emulator (add whatever options you'd normally use, probably none, but you can check the steam.desktop file if you're unsure):
steamThis allows you to see any log or error messages that steam or its child processes throw to stdout/stderr.
Try running the game then and post the output.

I'm marking this as "FIXED", though it isn't solved, and not a great solution for anyone with a large Steam library (I haven't).
I uninstalled Steam, and then purged anything related to Steam from my system. rebooted, and re-installed Steam. The downside is all installed games have to be re-installed. For me, I have a 1Gb un-metered internet service, but for others on metered or slow connections, this would be much more painful.
BUT, it's worked. Uninstalling just the game didn't work, I literally had to purge my system of Steam and start again. I still have no idea what was causing the problem. And I still have to add the one locally installed game (which works reliably using Steam, less so using wine) that I have, when I'm done re-installing the other games.

I managed to work around this on my PopOS system by simply running the game from the terminal with STEAM_RUNTIME=0 set i.e. navigate to the install directory (where `ShadowOfTheTombRaider.sh` is) and run `STEAM_RUNTIME=0 ./ShadowOfTheTombRaider.sh`.
Obviously another imperfect solution, but easier than completely eradicating steam from my system and reinstalling everything. I realise it's not an Arch specific solution, but it seems unlikely the difference would matter for this specific situation and this page is relatively high in the google search results for the problem.
