yes, so long as your driver has support, you ought to be able to run an adhoc connection between them.
iwconfig ethX mode ad-hoc
iwconfig ethX essid mrgreens
and generate yourself a wep key:
http://www.andrewscompanies.com/tools/wep.asp
iwconfig ethX key <key>
then just set a static IP on both computers.

Can you set up static ip from command line ? for wlan0 then I will set up laptop to match

adjust how you see fit.

Yeah all set up on both machines only laptop will not set ad-hoc [under ubuntu!]
I can ping 192.168.1.23 on both but I guess they would anyway
Will have to read up more on getting shared network connection as I am a little in the dark about this sort of stuff
