[Solved] No wifi after install

Arch Noobie here. Switching from dual boot Pop OS/Win10

Already had Win10 on drive setup but did not see I was supposed to turn off fast boot before install as noted here:

The procedure of disabling Fast Startup is described in the tutorials for Windows 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11. In any case if you disable a setting, make sure to disable the setting and then shut down Windows, before installing Linux; note that rebooting is not sufficient.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dual_b … ibernation

I've turned off fast boot, did complete shut down but as expected, no wifi.

Wifi does work in both win10 and during archinstall using iwctl commands.
Also, I'm running Budgie DE and wifi panel shows my router with strong signal, but when little gear to set password and options does not show/work (flickers when I click to select my router).

Do I need to re-install Arch?
Grateful for any help.

Running System 76 Pangolin (pang11) with 64GB RAM with Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX200 wifi card

Re: [Solved] No wifi after install

Which network manager are you using and how did you configure it?

find /etc/systemd -type l -exec test -f {} \; -print | awk -F'/' '{ printf ("%-40s | %s\n", $(NF-0), $(NF-1)) }' | sort -f

What are you trying to use to configure the wifi and what is the actual error message you get for that?

Re: [Solved] No wifi after install

Post the output in #3 and since NM is incredibly chatty also please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Re: [Solved] No wifi after install

What are you trying to use to configure the wifi and what is the actual error message you get for that?

Sorry, I missed this:

I'm using the Budgie System Settings.
The error I get is: Connection failed. Secrets were required but not provided.

Re: [Solved] No wifi after install

The NIC is there but you've no carrier, do you get asked for a password when trying to connect to the AP?
Do you have any https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Polkit … ion_agents installed?

I do not get asked for a password.

I did not have polkit installed.

Just installed it and rebooted. No change with wifi.

I did not do anything to configure it. I'm not familiar with it outside of what I quickly read from your link.
Trying to be respectful of your time while you are helping me. I've got a lot of reading & studying of the wiki and forums ahead of me!

Re: [Solved] No wifi after install

I hope this was helpful!

lol, actually what you shared was very helpful -- to me!!!
Wifi is up and running after reboot. I can see details on the connection in the GUI now as well.

Thank you very much!

If you have time (fine if you don't). Can you walk me through your troubleshooting thoughts? Just some bullet points.
Not only would I like to be able to do this on my own in the future, I'd like to be able to pay your help forward someday.

Last question, was this the command that did the trick?
nmcli device wifi connect SSI password ************

Again, grateful for your help Seth. It's going to be much easier reading up on the wiki and forums without the RJ-45 leash!
I have much to learn!

Re: [Solved] No wifi after install

nmcli device wifi connect SSI password ************

Yes.

There's something foul w/ the Budgie NM frontend then, you can probably resort to https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … er-applet/ (thoug NM can store known connections and autoconnect w/o manual interventions) though I'd suspect it's a missing polkit agent (nb. that merely polkit won't do, you explicitly need to install an agent)

Troubleshooting is to first figure where things fail (ie. whether the NIC shows up, whether it has a carrier etc) then ballpark why, then blame your desktop environment tongue

Edit: Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

Re: [Solved] No wifi after install

Awesome!

Marked as solved.

I debated on Budgie or I3.
Budgie looks beautiful, but I do like a tiling window manager and was used to using Pop OS's implementation.

Now I'm not sure if I should reinstall with I3 or attempt to install I3 on top of Budgie. Both are out of the scope of this thread. I should probably work with what I have for now, get comfortable with pacman and learn the AUR and level up my Arch skills. I just hate to start customizing if I'm going to wipe it all out anyway. Good practice though I'm sure. Thanks again Seth!

Re: [Solved] No wifi after install

You can install serveral DEs/WMs in parallel and switch between them as you like.
The problem in this case however isn't Budgie-the-desktop-shell or Budgie-the-window-manager, but the NM frontend in its settings and the i3 alternative to that would likely be nm-applet anyway.
