Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

I have 2 Dell OptiPlex 5040 with i5-6500 processors and 6.5.5-arch1-1 that no longer properly shutdown or reboot. The power LED remains lit until the power button is held for 4s or longer but the system is off for all practical purposes. This issue *may* have started with the 6.4 kernel. Several other older Dell models still behave normally so it seems to be processor-specific.

What I tried (per https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … #p2124408):
Edited /etc/default/grub to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 quiet tpm_tis.interrupts=0"
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
mkinitcpio -p linux
systemctl poweroff (or reboot)

Yes I know I can change to an LTS kernel or a non-bleeding edge distro.

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

Did you check whether the LTS kernel actually still works?
Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

to illustrate the status quo.

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

Please try linux-lts and also a 6.3 kernel from the ALA as you believe the issue may have been introduced by 6.4.  If 6.3 still has the issue then please try 6.2.

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

Removed the tpm workaround and downgraded to linux-6.3.9.arch1-1. The system now reboots/powers off as it should.

I don't see the point in trying linux-lts but I will if it will help diagnose.

No, it was just to make sure this is down to the kernel and not the userspace.
6.4.x test(s) would be good and also post a journal for a working kernel for comparism.

With 6.3.9 the above journal command yields

Oct 03 13:20:53 woodshop (udev-worker)[256]: could not read from '/sys/module/pcc_cpufreq/initstate': No such device

Otherwise there's nothing obvious sticking out as difference except of course the simpledrm device…
Try to add "initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init" to the kernel parameters.

Kernel back to 6.5.5-arch1-1 and the above makes no difference.

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

Logwatch flagged an entry that I have not seen before but it is present with both kernels so I doubt it means much:

acpi PNP0A08:00: _OSC: platform retains control of PCIe features (AE_ERROR) ...: 10 Time(s)

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

Narrowed it down to

6.4.12-arch1-1 and previous work as expected
6.5.0-arch1-1 fails to poweroff but reboots as long as power remains on (from running previous, working kernel) but fails after a poweroff (done with the physical power button)
6.5.5-arch1-1 fails to poweroff but reboots as long as power remains on (from running previous, working kernel) but fails after a poweroff (done with the physical power button)

I'm assuming the rest of the 6.5.x kernels behave the same as 6.5.0-arch1-1 and 6.5.5-arch1-1

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

       reboot=         [KNL]
                        Format (x86 or x86_64):
                                [w[arm] | c[old] | h[ard] | s[oft] | g[pio]] \
                                [[,]s[mp]#### \
                                [[,]b[ios] | a[cpi] | k[bd] | t[riple] | e[fi] | p[ci]] \
                                [[,]f[orce]
Where reboot_mode is one of warm (soft) or cold (hard) or gpio (prefix with 'panic_' to set mode for panic reboot only),
reboot_type is one of bios, acpi, kbd, triple, efi, or pci,
reboot_force is either force or not specified,
reboot_cpu is s[mp]#### with #### being the processor to be used for rebooting.

"reboot=warm", then "reboot=bios" then "reboot=warm,bios"

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

After fiddling around with similar problem with my amd driven pc, I found a possible solution, that works for my box. In my case it was the watchdog. After disabling the module via adding a "modprobe.blacklist=sp5100_tco" to the options line of the bootlaoder,
reboots and shutdowns behaves now as they should be. In your case, with the intel setup, the option entry should, as far as i know, look like this "modprobe.blacklist=iTCO_wdt".

you can find more about the disabling of soft and hardware watchdogs in the arch wiki. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/improv … #Watchdogs

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

This came up in some other threads (also for sp5100_tco, but didn't work for iTCO_wdt)
Those however hinge on amdgpu…

@schasj, if it's not the watchdog, can you "systemctl poweroff --force --force"?
Can you reliably poweroff when booting only the multi-user.target along "nomodeset"?

Neither the iTCO_wdt nor "systemctl poweroff --force --force" makes any difference.

I'm not clear on how to properly perform your last suggested actions...

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

2nd link below, "nomodeset" is just a https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters
Given that the double force has not positive impact, I'd not hold my breath.

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

Changed boot options to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 quiet systemd.unit=multi-user.target nomodeset"

No help, still can't reboot or poweroff normally.

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

Did you grub-mkconfig afterwards?
How exactly did you go about the "reboot=bios" option?

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

Yes, I grub-mkconfig after every edit of /etc/default/grub. I don't think it matters but I've also mkinitcpio -p linux to be sure (advise on this, please).

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 quiet reboot=warm, bios" along with warm and bios individually.

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

Same here with ArchLinux and Dell Optiplex 3050 i5-7500 processor PC. With vanilla linux kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1, Optiplex 3050 doesn´'t shut down completely, as described above with Optiplex 5040. Other users seem to face the same problem with 6.5 kernel: https://www.reddit.com/r/openSUSE/comme … ompletely/

Keep it simple, stupid.

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

Both poweroff and reboot are working normally again with kernel 6.6.1-arch1-1.

However, and a separate issue which I'll link to here, my 2 Dell Precision T3600 boxes are in a reboot loop at "Loading Initial Ramdisk..." now. Sigh.

Same problem here with an XPS 9315 with kernel 6.5.11. But I just realize that removing the "quiet" kernel option fix the issue for me and all my colleagues too

Re: Cannot poweroff or reboot with kernel 6.5.5-arch1-1

I had the similar problem after updating to 6.6.1-arch1-1. No proper/consistent shutdown and suspend. Switching to the LTS kernel solved part of the problems, but added new ones (e.g. glitches after waking up from suspend). But it turned out that the problem was in my motherboard (asrock z370 pro4 ). I have updated the old motherboard firmware (never updated it since I bought it in 2017) and then reset all motherboard settings, now suspend and shutdown works perfectly on the new kernel.
