[SOLVED]Get stuck when trying to hibernate after resuming from suspend

How to reproduce

1. execute

systemctl suspend

2. resume from suspend
3. execute

systemctl hibernate

My laptop monitor will turn black, but my laptop does not turn off at all. Fans keep spinning and nothing happens when I press the power button. If I don't force my laptop to shut down, it will remain on throughout the entire night. The normal hibernate progress in my laptop is: firstly screen turns black, then I can hear some sort of capacitor charging sound, finally fans stop spinning, the laptop turns off.

What I have tried
Test cases
  • suspend then suspend: works properly

  • hibernate then hibernate: works properly

  • suspend then hibernate: unable to poweroff

  • hibernate then suspend: works properly

And I execute these commands:

Then this machine get stuck to hibernate, so I turn it off forcely.

Note: It is a minimal test environment, I only installed a few packges. Windows is also presented in this disk, but maybe it is not the cause, because I formated the whole disk and installed linux before, and this issue still exists.

This looks like the systemd issue #29938.

It seems to have been fixed in #30638, 3 weeks ago.

Our systemd package is presumably based on the latest systemd, which seems to have been released December 6th, 2023 - that is, more than 3 weeks ago; meaning the fix came after the current systemd release.

So, it looks to me like a bug that will likely be fixed in the next systemd update.

This issue looks more complex. I plugged this disk to another laptop, whose suspend and hibernate works properly, and that laptop could hibernate perfectly. I also tried this command in this Mechrevo laptop:

echo disk > /sys/power/state

It seems bypass the systemd, but hibernate still get stuck after I wake up from suspend.

I notice that hibernate has two stages. The first stage is screen and keyborad backlight turn off. The second stage is keyboard backlight turns on, and I can hear a sharp charging sound. Mechrevo always stuck at stage 2, and I can not hear the charging sound.

About that parallel Windows install, have you read about fast startup and hibernation?
I don't have a parallel Windows myself, so I have no experience with that, but if it's important enough that Seth keeps it in his signature, you'd better check it out if you haven't already smile

Otherwise, I can only recommend going through https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hibernate with at fine-tooth comb - which I'm sure you did already.

I don't see anything wrong with your setup.

Finally I found the reason: This seems to be related to the C6 c-state of AMD Ryzen CPU https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Ryzen# … nd_suspend

I temporarily solved this issue by adding

processor.max_cstate=1

to kernel parameters. It looks less elegant, that's because my UEFI firmware does not have "Typical current idle" like options.

The way of find the solution is quiet interesing. I set CPU frequency to 400MHz(the minimal value that my CPU supports) so that I can record the hibernate logs as much as possible. There is a abnormal log, which is the last log I can see, says: "queueing iieee80211 work while going to suspend". So I google it and find https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=288637, finally I find the root cause from post #2.
