Dell Alienware M18 R1 AMD

Hi! August 23, 2023 I ordered (and September 6, 2023 received) a laptop for my mom and I'm setting up an Archlinux environment on it. I've encountered a few issues and I'm posting this to keep track and organize the informations here for now.

Note: I purchased and installed two 2tb ssds and two 32gb sticks of ddr5 ram (they did not come with the delivered laptop)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX (Dell item 338-CKNQ)
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT (Dell Item 490-BJGF)
SSD: (2) SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen4 M.2 2280 SSD (Model SHPP41-2000GM-2)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws SO-DIMM 64GB (2 x 32GB) 262-Pin DDR5 DDR5 5600 (PC5 44800) Laptop Memory (Model F5-5600S4040A32GX2-RS)
Wireless: Qualcomm WCN6856, 2x2, 802.11ax, MU-MIMO, Bluetooth(R) wireless card (Dell item 555-BHUD)
Display: 18" QHD+ (2560x1600) 165Hz, 3ms, ComfortView Plus, 100% DCI-P3, FHD IR Camera (Dell item 391-BHPX)
BIOS: InsydeH2O v1.5.2 [August 17, 2023 release] (upgraded from v1.2.2 [May 10, 2023 release] delivered with the laptop)

Additional Dell SupportAssist System Info:

- LCD Panel Manufacturer ID: E430
- LCD Panel Product ID: 074A
- LCD Panel supports BIST [built-in self test]: Yes
- Network Controller: Realtek PCIe 2.5GBE Family Controller
- USB2.0 Hub: 2109:2817 [Via Labs, Inc.]
- Wireless Controller: 0489:E0E3
- Keyboard: 0D62:AAB0 [Dell Technologies]
- AW-ELC: 187C:0551 [Alienware]
- USB3.0 Hub: 2109:0817 [VIA Labs, Inc.]
- Integrated Webcam: 0BDA:555A [C7FME20T08142001EB00] <-- This C7FM... value probably should appear as "Realtek" [guess] but it seems to be incorrect value for the field it is displayed as. `lshw` (see below) also shows this as the vendor name.
- Video: 1002:164E [RAPHAEL]
- Embedded Controller: 0A.15
- System BIOS: 1.5.2
- PD Firmware: 00.04.04.56

Output [other]:

- `cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/current_clocksource` => "tsc" [see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=208321]
- `cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/available_clocksource` => "tsc hpet acpi_pm"

Issues (in no particular order):

  1. `dmesg -W` shows kernel panic after I exit ($mod+shift+e) i3wm (sometimes, not always, output may vary each time)

  2. `dmesg` shows repeating "task kworker/u64:3:3907 blocked for more than [#] seconds." every ~2 minutes for 10 times concluding with "Future hung task reports are suppressed, see sysctl kernel.hung_task_warnings"

  3. `dmesg -W` shows nothing after I run `systemctl restart sddm` and it is not responding/not doing anything, and I've been waiting 5+ minutes for exiting $mod+shift+e i3wm stuck at a glitched console with cursor underline at top-left corner not blinking. And like I've experienced a few times now, even reboot (or `systemctl reboot`) doesn't work, and before that `systemctl kill sddm` wasn't effective.

  4. `dmesg` (see output above) shows ACPI BIOS Error (bug)s during boot

  5. `dmesg` (see output above) shows "[   13.172223] dell_smbios: Unable to run on non-Dell system" on a Dell system

  6. `dmesg` (see output above) shows "[   14.100386] ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: UCSI_GET_PDOS failed (-95)" and "ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: error -ETIMEDOUT: PPM init failed"

  7. `dmesg` (see output above) shows "[   16.015181] [drm:psp_hw_start [amdgpu]] *ERROR* PSP load kdb failed!" and "[   16.015333] [drm:psp_resume [amdgpu]] *ERROR* PSP resume failed" and "[   16.015444] [drm:amdgpu_device_fw_loading [amdgpu]] *ERROR* resume of IP block <psp> failed -62"
alternatively, journalctl shows as [red] error output:

kernel: [drm:psp_hw_start [amdgpu]] *ERROR* PSP load kdb failed!
kernel: [drm:psp_resume [amdgpu]] *ERROR* PSP resume failed
kernel: [drm:amdgpu_device_fw_loading [amdgpu]] *ERROR* resume of IP block <psp> failed -62
    kernel: amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: amdgpu: amdgpu_device_ip_resume failed (-62).
    ...
    kernel: amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: amdgpu: SMU: response:0xFFFFFFFF for index:52 param:0x00000000 message:ReenableAcDcInterrupt?
    kernel: amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: amdgpu: SMU: response:0xFFFFFFFF for index:52 param:0x00000000 message:ReenableAcDcInterrupt?

also logging in to desktop environments sometimes [too many] `dmesg -W` shows output like this:

[ 67.384239] [drm] PCIE GART of 512M enabled (table at 0x00000081FEB00000).

  16. Booting laptop, waiting at sddm desktop login screen, idling until screen shuts off, then moving cursor to turn on screen, visual glitches appeared blinking/flashing every second or so and `journalctl -m -f` shows this: https://archive.ph/6Pb58 / https://web.archive.org/web/20231004215 … HWfi.10.04

[work in progress : note to self: monitor `journalctl -f` and `dmesg -W` logging in and out of all desktop environments]

I noticed an issue running extra/emptyepsilon [https://github.com/daid/EmptyEpsilon] in GNOME, and I thought it was GPU-related issues, however running in i3wm seemed fine, so I'm testing running them in all these desktop environments: (thorough testing failed to reproduce, so it must be some other issue that caused the situation I experienced, which was barely responsive system, mouse cursor moved slowly, 10-20 seconds between jumps, and no sound from clicking on the buttons that should play sound effect)

Re: Dell Alienware M18 R1 AMD

Replying here to keep the main post from getting too cluttered. With ssh sessions running `dmesg -W` and `journalctl -m -f` and then on the laptop running `xonotic-glx` anticipating amdgpu visual errors to reproduce, loading the game was delayed a little and now black screen, and the output is as follows:

Also note, even `kill`ing the xonotic-glx process leaves the laptop monitor screen appearing fully black, but also the glitches are not always the same as now, but basically everytime the monitor becomes more and more areas with random bits/chunks/lines of garbled messed up visual things, getting worse and worse, or sometimes [like now], all at once, and never gets better. Rebooting is required for each time this happens

----

Another run of `xonotic-glx` crashing with only a little visual glitches at first, and then 100% black screen can't see a thing anymore, but here is log output while it happened:

Re: Dell Alienware M18 R1 AMD

Alright, I equipped the mom with the laptop, albeit still with amdgpu video glitches that I couldn't fix, but maybe in future it'll work better after some updates. The webcam works but still no microphone functionality.

Re: Dell Alienware M18 R1 AMD

Reminder for self: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insyde_Software

> "In December 2023, Binarly (a security firm) published a set of vulnerabilities discovered on a number of bios chips, including Insyde's. The firm highlighted that malicious actors can bypass boot security protocols using the mentioned set"

I remember hearing about InsydeH20 from somewhere, and I remember now that I noticed it on the BIOS for the laptop I purchased for my mother, which is not in my possession.

Note/reminder to self to convert infos I shared in my 6% upvoted post https://old.reddit.com/r/LegionGo/comme … f/kslre36/ to investigate the Dell Alienware M18 R1 AMD laptop if it's fixable, if ever Dell will release a BIOS update that fixes it. So far I noticed https://dell.com/community/en/conversat … 4bd6d803d9
