Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm using a Thinkpad T520 (2011). I've always had trouble with bluetooth on this laptop and I haven't tried using the eSATA or Firewire ports, or the fingerprint sensor. Otherwise, everything works great.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I am using the LTS kernel on ASUS FX753VD (manufactured in 2017) as a triple boot with Debian 11 and Win 10. No problems so far.

Only one thing is certain: nothing is certain.

I know nothing about your processor, but I'd be willing to bet your browser is struggling because of so little RAM.  It's a good thing you're running Xfce, otherwise it might be worse!

See my post above, I just got one of these too!  I love it!  Now that I've gotten battery power consumption under control, I'm much happier with the battery life.

How did you get it with Fedora pre-loaded?  I didn't see an option like that when I purchased mine, straight from Lenovo.  So I bought mine with Windows 11 Home, and made sure I never booted it.  Managed to put it into Setup Mode, test it with memtest86+, then ran nvme sanitize to wipe and start fresh with Arch.

You can choose to purchase the laptop with or without an operating system, and you can customize it with different Windows, Ubuntu, or Fedora versions, I was forced to do this because I wanted the US keyboard layout, which was not an option with Lenovo's preconfigured setup, but I had to wait for nearly two months.

I was only disappointed by the key travel reduction from 1.8mm to 1.5mm after using the T41, X230, X250, T470s, and two external IBM and Lenovo keyboards, but overall, the performance, the construction material and the specs is quite satisfactory.

Thinkpad x1g11 (Secureboot, systemd-boot, mkinitcpio, tpm, linux, luks, btrfs, systemd-login, xorg and qtile)

CPU: 13th Gen Intel i7-1355U (12) @ 5.000GHz
GPU: Intel Raptor Lake-P [Iris Xe Graphics]

graphical.target reached after 3.926s in userspace.

Thinkpad t470s  (Secureboot, systemd-boot, mkinitcpio, tpm, linux, luks, btrfs, systemd-login, xorg and qtile)

CPU: Intel i5-7200U (4) @ 3.100GHz
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 620
Memory: 20GiB
Kernel: 6.7.1-arch1-1

systemd-analyze output:

$ systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 5.167s (firmware) + 3.191s (loader) + 781ms (kernel) + 6.104s (initrd) + 5.817s (userspace) = 21.063s
graphical.target reached after 5.438s in userspace.

Though it's not a fair comparison, both devices with the most recent firmware update double the firmware loading time when compared to the T470s. However, the Thinkpad X1 unlocks my Luks encrypted container using TPM in about 1 second, while the T470s takes about 4 seconds.

The laptop runs very well, sleep, hibernation are working flawlessly. It is a very cool laptop, even under load conditions the components do not scale so quickly. With the nvidia driver and RTD3 suspend on, the CPU stays at 44 °C on office tasks and lasts for 7 hours. Runs great with Plasma's Wayland and its mandatory, cause it DPI scales the app's the right way. In a pure X session its a manual ongoing pain to scale them.

Issues:
I had frequent erratic crashes in the beginning, turns out that disabling intel Panel Self Refresh resolved them completely.

The laptop has 2 tweeters and 2 woofers, the woofers do not turn on after a restart. There is an i2c script that fixes that. It can be put in cron and works in a systemd script after suspend. The problem is, the speakers stay at 100% and can only be tuned down via the application specific sound profile.

It comes with Win 11.

That's basically it, one of the best laptops I ever had, I must say.

Huawei Matebook D14. Have had no problems with it except unresolved bluetooth issues, which is strange because bluetooth worked completely fine on Manjaro Linux before I installed base Arch on it. Never tried to use the fingerprint reader, I don't like biometrics.

Lenovo LOQ 15 (2023, Intel). Everything that works on Windows works on Linux, with the exception of the fan control and custom power profiles that you'd get through Vantage or Lenovo Legion Toolkit. (LenovoLegionLinux doesn't support the LOQ.) Well, and I haven't tested the Ethernet port. I especially love that it came with S3 sleep out of the box instead of s2idle/Modern Standby.

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook (with custom firmware). Everything in it works great, except for the fingerprint sensor, which to my knowledge used a closed-source driver in Chrome OS. It actually works better than my main PC for some things, despite having a weaker CPU, because this hardware was built for Linux.

Note that there may be issues with interfacing with some hardware that was made specifically for Chrome devices, such as the charging systems, the keyboard backlight, and some sensors. I haven't had too big of issues, but I feel it's good to mention because I've had some minor issues in the past.
There are issues with it waking from sleep randomly because of something Samsung did wrong with the lid switch.
Sound may not work without the Chromebook-Audio script available from the FAQ page of mrchromebox.tech

Usually when I'm browsing forums it's because I had the same problem as someone else had 10 years ago and the same solution still works.

Lenovo ThinkPad X131e. Arch installed and working great. The only difficulty was getting WiFi working on Broadcom BCM4313. Found Broadcom-wl-dkms and all is working fine.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm using a Lenovo ideâpd (2020). I've always had trouble with bluetooth on this laptop and I haven't tried using the eSATA or Firewire ports, or the fingerprint sensor. Otherwise, everything works great.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

At work I had access to a Surface Laptop 3, the 13.5" model with the Intel config, which was marked for recycling due to damages to a broken display glass and a worn out charging port. Everything but the touchscreen works out of the box and that can be fixed with the linux-surface kernel. Even hibernation and standby all work as expected, as well as backlight settings and keyboard illumination. Too bad fixing this thing would cost so much, because this is one of the nicest laptops I've used with Linux so far. After my experiences with the Surface Pro 6 (tablet), I didn't think I'd enjoy another Surface.
