[SOLVED] Error when upgrading extra/gvfs

Yesterday I tried upgrading, which failed.

I don't remember the exact error message, but I think it was pretty much the same I got this morning. This is when I run the command:

I've looked at this, but I don't have memory of having done anything like that in the last few days.

Re: [SOLVED] Error when upgrading extra/gvfs

as you have multiple mirrors having issues:
- are you on mobile internet?
- when did you last updated your mirrorlist? if possible install reflector and have it create an up-to-date mirrorlist

Why are you looking at a thread about conflicting files when you have network problems?

Oops, I thought the error message was the same.

No it's a WiFi, but I have noticed the connection to be somewhat slower since yesterday (or maybe the day before, I can't tell).

cryptearth wrote:

Well, I normally do sudo pacman -Syu at least once a day.

Re: [SOLVED] Error when upgrading extra/gvfs

He asked when you updated your mirrorlist.  Your first mirror is good, so I doubt the mirrors are really the issue - however you have a couple mirrors that I cant even find listed on the mirror status page at all.  So updating your mirrorlist would still seem wise once any networking issues are sorted out.

Not the same thing.  The mirrorlist identifies the mirros Pacman will use.  Generally you would pick a few that are near you, are fast, and are updated regularly.  The thought is that you are using a mirror that needs some love.

Look into reflector : https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Reflector

Edit: Snaked.

My /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist starts with

################################################################################
################# Arch Linux mirrorlist generated by Reflector #################
################################################################################

# With: reflector --protocol https --age 1 --sort rate --save /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

# Retrieved: 2020-07-14 17:00:44 UTC
# Last Check: 2020-07-14 16:11:40 UTC

but I don't remember I've installed/used this reflector executable. Is it maybe that this file comes with Arch. Or with pacman? Or it just means I've forgotten to have used it in the past?

Given the comment, though, I'd be tempted to just re-run that command and see how the list is updated.

I wouldn't know where to start from for these. Especially considering that at the moment I don't see anything wrong with internet. I can watch Netflix just fine, for instance.

Re: [SOLVED] Error when upgrading extra/gvfs

If it helps, I've just manually upgraded every package I would see listed by sudo pacman -Syu by individually executing sudo pacman -S that-package. The result is that the package I can't upgrade is extra/gvfs, so I've also changed the title of the present thread.

Yes.
Also, sanity check:

find /etc/systemd -type l -exec test -f {} \; -print | awk -F'/' '{ printf ("%-40s | %s\n", $(NF-0), $(NF-1)) }' | sort -f

by individually executing sudo pacman -S that-package

That's not a very clever idea - if you run that in the wrong order, you can break the system to the point where pacman fails to run further updates.

Re: [SOLVED] Error when upgrading extra/gvfs

Some info about the connection:

Speedtesting results in this result, copied below:

 DOWNLOAD Mbps
294.86
 UPLOAD Mbps
52.36
Ping ms 18 61 46

Then I've tried using with the cli of it, installed via

$ sudo pacman -S speedtest-cli

and the result was a bit different at first,

$ speedtest
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from Virgin Media (81.109.143.226)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by Zen Internet (London) [80.30 km]: 23.729 ms
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 84.90 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed......................................................................................................
Upload: 50.92 Mbit/s

and then I could not even run it anymore!

$  speedtest

Re: [SOLVED] Error when upgrading extra/gvfs

You don't have multiple network daemons but obvious issues w/ you network:

wget -nv --show-progress -O /dev/null "http://speedtest.london.linode.com/1GB-london.bin"

And please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Can you use a wired connection?

Re: [SOLVED] Error when upgrading extra/gvfs

There're no obvious issues in the journal, but maybe this is related to the openconnect tun device and resolved using the wrong DNS information?

Re: [SOLVED] Error when upgrading extra/gvfs

You've some VPN with a separate DNS, if resolved starts resolving IPs using the wrong DNS you'll be in trouble.
The speedtest 403 looks suspicious.
=> avoid the openconnect and see whether the issue remains - so far there's no indication of a HW/driver issue, the linode speedtest worked nicely - either your ISP is going through some phases or something causes non-deterministic behavior and I don't trust resolved at all.

Re: [SOLVED] Error when upgrading extra/gvfs

Wait, I hadn't really realized you mentioned "openconnect".

You see that in the log because I use it to connect to the VPN of my office to work from home, but the problem with sudo pacman -S extra/gvfs is independent of that.

I'll now reboot and answer again to your message #12.

This is right after the reboot: I tried pacman update and then uploaded the journal:

Re: [SOLVED] Error when upgrading extra/gvfs

Given the packages listed above, would you still advise against upgrading them one by one?

I guess for sure upgrading exra/rofi and extra/quotebrowser, to make an example, should be harmless, as they are not depended on by anything else.

It's jut that it feels weird that earlier today I could upgrade all packages except extra/gvfs, and I suspect it is still the same one that is making pacman error now.

Don't you think that's important? If not, why?

Oh, incidentally, I tried to use my smartphone as an hot spot (seem to be quite a bit slower, though), and the issue persists.

You mean paccache?

I sometimes do

paccache -rk1
paccache -ruk0

What do you mean instead?

Re: [SOLVED] Error when upgrading extra/gvfs

Or "pacman -Scc" and see

ls -l /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gvfs*

This might help you w/ the gvfs packge in case it's corrupted, but  not with the network issues that might have caused the corruption.
Are those meanwhile gone?

Oh, so there was a corruption. I had not got that, tbh. I suppose this means that the network issue is a bit sporadic, in the sense that now that I've done the update... it means the network issue was at least not severe enough to re-cause the same corruption again.
