See one problem that happens to many Linux users is that they become nomads. (My friend has fallen to this fate. Arch's simplicity isn't the solution to everyone I guess.) Distro hoppers. Liking parts of one distro and parts of others and changing their distro all the time.
I have found my home in archlinux though. It seems to be the best distro for a desktop user who uses an Intel processor.
But I cannot find the DE/WM that is right for me.
I like xfce the most, but I cannot get icons working with it. (on 4.4) One day when I tried to install a theme xfce went kablooie. I also have to enable testing to download it, which means unstable stuff gets sent down my way and my computer screws up. (Unless I do something smart like only enabling testing to install xfce rather than pacman -Syu'ing the whole testing repo.)
I hate gnome. I just never understood anything about it, other than gnome dependancies that infect many programs. (Sorry if I am using harsh words, gnome lovers will hate me.)
I don't like KDE so much either, I just got it today but I already am looking to change it. I like it because of two things. Konqueror is the best file manager hands down. It isn't too bloated, it does files and executes things properly *glares at rox*. It also has a sense of fashion and you can put a backgroun image on it. (which I have done.) The other thing is the kdesktop is nice, no other virtual desktop app seems to be anywhere near as good as it. Maybe Enlightenment is the answer I seek, but it feels complicated and I'm too lazy to learn it. I also can't seem to get Japanese input support in Qt apps working at all, only gtk apps. The other problem is that KDE is a little bloated, I don't like things that take up memory, but Arche has a lot of ram, so some stuff Marc is saying is getting into my head. But KDE in general is hard to use, it is user friendly and user friendly things are hard to use. (Ironic isn't it?)They make expectations of you and things never work the way you want them to work. My Devil's Pie scripts fail in KDE. I cannot even seem to pin Kopete to all workspaces, and I feel it might be the same for all Qt apps. When I ran zsnes only to find that after I open a game the window borders come back despite my scripts telling it to not be there I was upset. Sure, this problem has an easy solution, use KDE but configure alternatives to use Openbox or something that doesn't get in the way of my scripts as a WM. But then I have the other KDE problems.
So then all the DE's are out of the question and I have to go for a WM. The proplem with WMs is that things don't work well together. You are also stuck on things like file managers and stuff that seem to always come with DEs.
I'm tempted to go back to xfce, but then I'll be back where I started, and I'll have testing enabled again. Unless I get the old version of xfce, I can use gkrellm to moniter my system so the system moniter isn't needed so much but xffm sucks. I have an ok terminal now with Japanese support so screw a file manager and well when I look at things the path looks green.
The point is, I'm going in circles when it comes to my desktop environment. I need help. T_T What do you guys use for your desktop? Especially from the people who use window managers, how on earth do you get everything to fit together? WMs are the best solution, but the hardest to get working. (Or so I believe.)
I also need a web browser, Opera is nice and all but it is non-free software. It also uses Qt so Japanese support isn't great. I haven't gotten any emails from my Japanese friends today but how would I write Japanese emails if my browser has no Japanese support. Firefox is getting to use a lot of memory, and all the other browsers may be fine but they need gnome/kde dependancies.
I remember reading the Archlinux forums about a browser that didn't need gnome/kde dependancies. It had a Japanese name if I'm not mistaken, I can't find it anymore. If anyone knows it it would be helpful.
Anybody can help me?

Kazehakase?
It needs mozilla installed anyway

I'm using Openbox + some parts from XFCE (panel, thunar, settings manager) - works ok

Yea, it was Kazehakase. Though there doesn't seem to be a package for it. I guess I have to go learn AUR finally.
Since you are using Thunar, is there a way to install xfce from testing and only xfce from testing, ie, no new kernels and other possibly dangerous stuff. Or do you have them all? Or do you use the unstable Thunar?
Is there any good virtual desktop program other than kdesktop? Programs that make a fake root window on top of the real root window and make you have different wallpapers per workspace?

I'm just using xfce rc2

I use Fluxbox as WM.. works great, the only thing I will never get used to is that alt+tab will leave out minimized windows when cycling through apps ![]()
Other then that.. nice, slim and stable WM. No icons here too though.. but you can always use a dock app like yab with adesklets which looks alot better and does pretty much the same imo.

Yes. Just make sure you have the [testing] section is after the [current] and [extra] sections in /etc/pacman.conf. Then pacman -S testing/the-name-of-the-xfce4-rc2-package-you-want.

I read somewhere that you should never do that because testing has conflicts or something and it is a special repositery that always has to be at the top otherwise it might conflict with the system. Or so I heard.

True, I forgot about that. In that case. Enable testing above everything. Then pacman -Sy. NOT -Syu. Then pacman -S the-xfce-stuff. Then disable testing.

No, only needs xulrunner installed. Just the rendering engine and toolkit, not the whole browser and what not.
(It's still got a few quirks - some of the default keybinding stuff isn't very sane, icons may be trunkated in some places, entering a blank tab doesn't select the location bar, and the red circles used to indicate loading are very ugly - but it's become a much better browser than it used to be. And it's *fast*.)

Sure. It's pretty simple, and it's all in one file since I'm not a skilled configurator. It's inspired by Plan 9's window manager, so rather than having buttons or title bars on the windows right clicking on the desktop or a window frame brings up a menu. Left clicking on a window frame opens the same one, sans the Close option. That's so I don't have to worry about doing it by accident. Pressing F B P and N on the root scroll about the virtual desktop. Mouse 1 on root lists iconified windows. Strict mouse focus. Habak is used to switch wallpapers. There's some other stuff, but this is most of it. It's a little longer than I'd like, but I'll inline it here.

I went back to xfce, not testing though. I think I should be fine with the stable version. Testing has Thunar, but when I was new to Archlinux I wanted to get Thunar because I didn't have a good terminal emulator and my locale was C so I couldn't get Japanese support. Now I can just use the terminal for file managing.
I went to KDE becuase of the eye-candy desktop. But I just noticed I can get some eye candy with xfce by making a list of wallpapers to use.
My problem with openbox was things like having no clipboard for cutting and pasting, these are the kinds of things that I needed to ask the WM users how they fit everything together.

I'm moving from Kubuntu and fell in love with Arch and WMs (right now experimenting *boxes and FWVM); i googled for the same issue 10 mins ago, this could be useful to still-newbies like me:

For a more power approach FWVM's faq suggests xcb. Happy 2007.

what kind of problems do you have with KDE? i didn't get the script stuff, and kopete on all desktops should be easy. you can just add a 'on all desktops' button to the windowdecoration if you want, or even configure specific window settings (rmb on windec > advanced > special windowsettings). pretty good stuff...
about the ram usage, it depends on your usagepatern. if you frequently run many apps at the same time (eg music, agenda, mail, news and stuff in the background, some desktops with webbrowser, office and stuff) you're better of running KDE, as it shares much more between the apps compared to other environments. so you actually save lots of ram... but if you mix environments and apps, you don't get that advantage, it'll all be just big ![]()

Well, I'm a KDE user. I didn't like KDE at first, really. I'm an XFCE convert.
The best tip I can give you is start playing with KDE. You have to tweak it to make it right.
As for the bloat, well, I don't lack that much HDD space, so I can live with the extra text editors, I just don't use them.
As for RAM usage, I rather to have my RAM used and have my system a bit more responsive. The optimal way of using KDE is using KDE applications. They will use plenty of shared resources, so they won't take up much RAM. I use Konqueror for browsing (Firefox only in certain cases), Kontact and Kopete. They work pretty well.
KDE is also bloated with features, and some very useful ones at some cases. Search the forums for a thread called "Smart desktop working tips" or something similar, it contains several tips and tricks regarding KDE.
And some other things to consider:
- Amarok (Well, that's just a famous KDE application)
- Integrated spell checking
- KIO slaves (This requires some reading, but a nice example for it would be the fact that you can open files in a KDE application regardless of where the file is. It can be on your local drive, on a network etc.)
Damn, I really am a KDE "groopie" sometimes.
To sum it up, KDE has a lot to offer. You just have to discover it all.

For me XFCE is the ultimate compromise between good looks and weight. And besides, it has it's own compositor which is quite stable.
