install/boot issue with 2.6.19 or 0.8-Alpha with ULi 1567

Sorry to double post with 0.8 Voodoo installation feedback; but this issue which seems to be related to PATA(_ali) shift in the kernel may be of interest for devs!
Alpha 0.8 32 & 64 images seem to run great for a great amount of testers according to feedbacks.
However I've been unable to install due to following issue here (both with standard & x86_64 Base ISOs dated 2006-12-19):

Hardware is ASRock 939Dual-SATA2. Southbridge ULi 1567 takes care of both 2 x SATA1 & 2 x ATA-133 HDD controlers (a good picture here)

1) Booting with standard Install/rescue quickly stop with a hwdetect segfault
9da2022c94_tn.jpg

EIP: [<f880e8f2>] ali_init_one+0x242/0x2e0 [pata_ali] SS:ESP 0068:c1a09e20
  /sbin/hwdetect: line 287: 441 Segmentation fault modprobe $i > dev/null 2>&1

2) ide-legacy Install/Rescue boots fine : it also shows pata_ali / hwdetect line 287 : 445 killed message but goes on
97af437870_tn.jpg
I've got 2 SATA HDDs on a non-Intel ASRock 939 Dual SataII mobo (no IDE HDDs, only CD & DVD burners on hdc & hdd).
I could make partition on the 2 SATA HDDs with cfdisk (as I'm planning a major shift to RAID1 / LVM), then was stopped with what seem to be udev issue.
- created 3 Linux RAID partitions on both HDDs with cfdisk
- checked raid1 module was launched - ok
- created 1st Raid array with mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3
but couldn't go further as there was no md1, etc in /dev. Wanted to launch 'makdevs' but this is not on the Base ISOs. Will try mknod as quoted by dotnetfireball.

Hope this might be of interest (and also that someone can give me some hints to install arch  )

More:

· Other Linux distro that see the HDD without trouble : Sabayon-3.2, Mandriva 2007 mini &... Arch Linux 0.7.x
· Both base-0.8 32 & 64-bit ISO images were md5 checked & fine.
· Previous boot issue with kernel-2.6.19-ARCH screenshot might be of interest:

Re: install/boot issue with 2.6.19 or 0.8-Alpha with ULi 1567

I have the same mainboard running arch64 for over a year on it. I'm using single hard disc drives for booting. I do not use the additional sata controller and no raid.

If I can help you hurry up and catch me on any instant messenger. I will replace the mainboard within the next days.

Re: install/boot issue with 2.6.19 or 0.8-Alpha with ULi 1567

kozaki this looks like a kernel 2.6.19 bug in pata driver that just panics on your controller.
there you see why pata is still experimental, if ide-legacy works it's fine

Re: install/boot issue with 2.6.19 or 0.8-Alpha with ULi 1567

allright then; it's been said right from the start that this IDE-PATA shift in kernel-2.6.19 is Beta. as everybody else I've been warned.

This is why hwdetect segfaults, right ?

Now Hitachi tool says something that _could_ be related whit this issue (kernel 2.6.19 with PATA driver panics on ULi 1567 Sata controler): It says my Hitachi sata HDDs are PCI IDE Masters. Screenshot:
ce6e232ada_tn.png

Then I launched 'Darik Boot & Nuke' tool (Linux based) and it says HDDs are SCSI 1,0,0,0,- ATA... :

!?

Re: install/boot issue with 2.6.19 or 0.8-Alpha with ULi 1567

booted legacy-ide kernel from alpha-0.8 and now cannot use Raid & lvm devices I created before.

Two sata 80gb Hitachi, each partitioned like this:
sd[ab]1 -- 5gb -- (for windows on /sda)
sd[ab]2 -- 100mb -- ext2 -- /boot
sd[ab]5 -- 256mb -- swap
sd[ab]6 -- 15gb -- linux raid autodetect + LVM (/dev/systems array with 3 logical volumes)
sd[ab]7 -- 9gb -- linux raid autodetect + LVM (/dev/data array with 3 logical volumes)
sd[ab]8 -- 48gb -- linux raid autodetect + LVM (/dev/extra array with 1 logical volume)

Created the FS with raid1 & lvm with mandriva 2007 x86_64.
Checked it with Sabayon LiveDVD & they do assemble fine.

On Arch, raidX & dm_mod are loaded.
Assemble sd[ab]6 /dev/md0 with mdadm. cat /proc/mdstat shows I device.
As /dev/md0 is the single md* device activated at boot I create md1 & md2 with
mknod -m 0660 /dev/mdN b 9 0

Then i can't assemble md1 nor md2: says devices are allready used !?
/proc/mdstat shows only 1 device, but mdadm --detail /dev/md0/1/2 show exactly the same data, as if they were the very same device.
So I can use a single raid array.

could create logical volumes on 1st raid array, & then cannot go on with md1 & md2 as they are allready in use !?

Now rebooted in Sabayon & cat /proc/mdstat clearly show 3 devices:

md2 : active raid0 sda8[0] sdb8[1]
      100855808 blocks 64k chunks

md1 : active raid1 sda7[0] sdb7[1]
      9213120 blocks [2/2] [UU]

you have created raid devices not with install media, use then the correct initcpio parameters to assemble the devices during boot.

Re: install/boot issue with 2.6.19 or 0.8-Alpha with ULi 1567

also you created the devices wrong!
  9 block    Metadisk (RAID) devices
          0 = /dev/md0        First metadisk group
          1 = /dev/md1        Second metadisk group

... thank you tpowa. Sorry for having bothered you guys
as it is well explained in Convert a single drive system to RAID, or I could have checked how they are under Sabayon for example (to continue tpowa's):

brw------- 1 root root 9,  2 jan  3 03:10 /dev/md2
brw------- 1 root root 9,  3 jan  3 03:07 /dev/md3

Re: install/boot issue with 2.6.19 or 0.8-Alpha with ULi 1567

Installed arch64 (2006-12-19 ISO) on raid0+1 & LVM (/boot on /dev/sda2, no raid) and it went fine smile

Just a detail : Wiki says to mount arrays with /boot, / & /home _before_ running /arch/setup. Doing that I had no conf file (they appear in install ncurses menu, but vi says "new file" and show no content). So I unmounted them and mounted them in the installer that shows everything fine (you can choose only one swap though)

Arch Voodoo alpha suceeded where Mandriva 2007 & Sabayon 3.2 could install but I've been unable to boot one of those 2.
Again, editing the conf files manually then launching the commands I want proove to be a better choice than GUIs that take-care-of-everything smile
