HP Laptop Audio Not Playing

Hi, I have:
- installed Arch
- am running kde (if that matters)
- unmuted my sound cards via amixer (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Advanc … e_channels)
- installed sof-firmware

And I am still not receiving any audio from speaker-test. It it will run though and say it is playing tones, but I hear nothing.

Does anyone have advice? Thanks.

Edit: As some bonus info, if I plug in headphones to my audio jack, they successfully play audio. My HP laptop does have a "mute speakers" button (F6) on my keyboard, which is working, but maybe it was on when I removed windows and setup Arch. Maybe HP had this setup to do something niche and mute the actual devices speakers? Just a guess, and I have no idea how to check if that would be the case.

What further outputs do you get from

amixer -c0
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
pactl list cards
pactl list sinks

Does neither

speaker-test -Dhw:0,0 -c2
speaker-test -Dhw:0,31 -c2

give you noise? FWIW HPs are somewhat known for broken verb tables so this might well be a firmware issue, in which case you might want to check whether an UEFI update might possibly help you.

Hey, thanks for responding. I tried updating my firmware using fwupd, and that did not seem to fix the issue. Neither of the speaker-test commands provide audio from the speaker.

if I plug in headphones to my audio jack, they successfully play audio. My HP laptop does have a "mute speakers" button (F6) on my keyboard, which is working, but maybe it was on when I removed windows and setup Arch. Maybe HP had this setup to do something niche and mute the actual devices speakers?

Try to bypass PA/PW

mpv -ao alsa thunderstruck.mp3

and then check the system journal for snd messages - I'm pretty sure we had sth. like this and only the HPs showed up as devices…
