[SOLVED] External screen freezes when opening nautilus

Hi,

after a system update i notice that when i open nautilus (i'm running gnome 47.0.1) and i have a second screen connected to the hdmi port (i have a dedicated graphic card nvidia 4070 on a laptop) the external monitor freezes completely and i have to disconnect the hdmi or disable it by the settings panel to make it work again.
I'v tried checking the logs with journalctl, but these are the only logs that i'm getting:

Re: [SOLVED] External screen freezes when opening nautilus

"sudo journalctl -b", unless you're member of some admin groups, unprivileged users only get to see their session journal.
Also please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Is this strictly limited to nautilus? No other client causes this?

Re: [SOLVED] External screen freezes when opening nautilus

journal logs

yes, for what i experienced it happends only with nautilus.
It happends every time i launch it, and then if i reconnect the monitor (with nautilus still opened) everything is ok, but after a variable amount of time the monitor freezes again.

Re: [SOLVED] External screen freezes when opening nautilus

Because it's like top-posting.
Why not?
Please don't use -r with journalctl.

[     7.762] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sat Aug  3 14:53:01 2024

The Xorg log is severely dated.

Re: [SOLVED] External screen freezes when opening nautilus

Cross talk smile

[ 10278.056] (**) |-->Inactive Device "nvidia"

Remove (I guess) optimus-manager and residual configs¹ and run the system in regular prime fashion.
Still an issue?

¹

grep integrated /{etc,usr/share}/X11/xorg.conf*

Edit:
If

[ 10278.502] (WW) NVIDIA(G0): Cannot find size of first mode for Acer KG221Q (DFP-4); cannot
[ 10278.502] (WW) NVIDIA(G0):     compute DPI from Acer KG221Q (DFP-4)'s EDID.

remains afterwards, please post the output of

for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done

You'll need https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/edid-decode-git

Another thing is

ott 09 22:26:12 5i-Andrea systemd[1]: Started Hostname Service.
ott 09 22:26:12 5i-Andrea systemd[1]: Starting Hostname Service...

and you've a hostname w/ a leading digit, what's legal but iirc systemd used to take issue w/ that and X11 is hostname sensitive…
I can't explain the symptoms out of that, but  the coincidence smells fishy, so maybe try "Si-Andrea"…

Re: [SOLVED] External screen freezes when opening nautilus

After removing optimus-manger the integrated screen stopped working and is no longer detected.

What does the xorg log for that look like?
(The one you posted has

[ 10278.055] (==) ServerLayout "layout"
[ 10278.055] (**) |-->Screen "integrated" (0)
[ 10278.055] (**) |   |-->Monitor "<default monitor>"

[ 10278.056] (**) |   |-->GPUDevice "Card0"
[ 10278.056] (==) No monitor specified for screen "integrated".
	Using a default monitor configuration.
[ 10278.056] (**) |-->Inactive Device "nvidia"

which is an OM config)

That's just the first dozen line, it'll make more sense to post the complete journal because all the relevant information comes afterwards smile

Re: [SOLVED] External screen freezes when opening nautilus

i'v just made yet another  system update that seems to have resolved the problem (now nautilus opens correctly without any freezes and optimus-manger is still installed)

And what packages were updated?

Re: [SOLVED] External screen freezes when opening nautilus

my system is reporting fully up-to-date but i'm still encountering the same issue reported.

Oct 13 19:05:39  systemd[2031]: Started dbus-:1.2-org.gnome.Nautilus@1.service.
Oct 13 19:05:39  nautilus[43104]: Connecting to org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files
Oct 13 19:05:39 nautilus[43104]: Tracker 2 migration: Couldn't run tinysparql3: Failed to execute child process “tinysparql3” (No such file or directory)
Oct 13 19:05:39  systemd[2031]: Started dbus-:1.2-org.gnome.NautilusPreviewer@1.service.
Oct 13 19:05:39 gnome-shell[2153]: Window manager warning: Buggy client sent a _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW message with a timestamp of 0 for 0x6200004 (wallpaper.com wants to save)
Oct 13 19:05:42  /usr/lib/gdm-x-session[2074]: (II) event6  - Mouse: SYN_DROPPED event - some input events have been lost.

this is all i'm seeing in my journalctl -b output and nothing in my xorg logs. this specific event occurred when my browser tried to save a wallpaper using nautilus but the same thing happens when launching nautilius on its own. my current fix is to switch my tty to tty0 and back with a keyboard shortcut.

Re: [SOLVED] External screen freezes when opening nautilus

hmmm, i wonder if the issue was fixed on the nvidia proprietary drivers since i'm running the nvidia-open drivers and still encountering this issue despite having the same package versions for everything else.

Edit 10/16/2024: I found issues for this bug on the gnome gitlab page and it seems like no-one really has an answer/proper fix however, installing the nightly build of nautilus via flatpak seems to have resolved these issues. Only issue now is Brave's default file-manager, which I also can't seem to figure out how to change, is the default nautilus so it crashes my display when trying to download/upload files on websites. I guess we just gotta wait for some updates to hit the pipeline.
