[SOLVED] Vulkan driver not working in computer with 2 GPUs

Hi all, I'm troubleshooting an issue where I can't get many Steam games to run on a new install of Arch. I have a computer with two individual Asus Strix RTX 3090s and I am having this exact issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=282617. When I launch a game, it get a flickering, black screen full of artifacts. Sometimes my monitor turns off.

If I set "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1" in Steam launch options, the games will work.

The Arch Wiki says I may need to force Vulkan to use a specific GPU: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Vulkan#Switching

However, the output of MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT=list vulkaninfo shows both my GPUs have the same vendorID:deviceID, so I'm not sure if I can pick one this way. To be clear they're individual GPUs in PCI-e slots 1 and 4, no bridge between them.

$ MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT=list vulkaninfo
selectable devices:
  GPU 0: 10de:2204 "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090" discrete GPU 0000:05:00.0
  GPU 1: 10de:2204 "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090" discrete GPU 0000:0b:00.0

I tried setting the suggested variable anyway, but get the same result. vkcube also shows a similar flickering void of artifacts.

$ MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT=10de:2204!
$ vkcube
Selected GPU 0: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, type: DiscreteGpu

I've messed with wine/proton/steam versions/settings, but since vkcube has issues, I am guessing Vulkan is the culprit. I appreciate any guidance, thank you. Below is some more potentially relevant output:

Re: [SOLVED] Vulkan driver not working in computer with 2 GPUs

Please use [code][/code] tags, not "quote" tags. Edit your post in this regard.

Did you test the behavior w/ only one GPU to make sure that's actually the problem?
Can you sufficiently control the GPU w/

DRI_PRIME=pci-0000_05_00_0 vkcube

resp

DRI_PRIME=pci-0000_0b_00_0 vkcube

?

Re: [SOLVED] Vulkan driver not working in computer with 2 GPUs

Also try using MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT_FORCE_DEFAULT_DEVICE some_command to ensure vulkan only reports one device.

https://docs.mesa3d.org/envvars.html#vulkan-mesa-device-select-layer-environment-variables wrote:

MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT_FORCE_DEFAULT_DEVICE

    when set to 1, the device identified as default will be the only one returned in vkEnumeratePhysicalDevices API.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: [SOLVED] Vulkan driver not working in computer with 2 GPUs

aside from the issue - what's the reason you have two gpus in the first place? multi-gpu (both nvidia sli and amd crossfire) is a thing of the past - so multiple gpus make only sense in either crypto mining or AI stuff - or something realy specialized like CAD - do you any of these things? if this a system for gaming only - you just wasted your money for a 2nd gpu no game will use

Re: [SOLVED] Vulkan driver not working in computer with 2 GPUs

The second GPU is for rendering/AI, and both GPUs work 100% for that. I'm expecting to use a single GPU for games. Minor correction, the second GPU is in PCIe slot 3, not 4.

If I unplug one of the GPUs, everything works fine. By "everything" I tested vkcube and 3 games that don't otherwise work (Outer Wilds, Hades, Parkitect)

Plugging both GPUs in for the rest of this post. These two commands give me the same output of "Selected GPU 0" which I'm not sure is correct. vkcube does not render correctly either time. If I run nvidia-smi after either vkcube command, I can see the VRAM and power usage increase on GPU 0 and no significant change on GPU 1.

$ DRI_PRIME=pci-0000_05_00_0 vkcube
Selected GPU 0: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, type: DiscreteGpu
$ DRI_PRIME=pci-0000_0b_00_0 vkcube
Selected GPU 0: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, type: DiscreteGpu

If I set MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT_FORCE_DEFAULT_DEVICE=1, vulkaninfo only reports GPU0, which seems correct.

Not sure if this is useful, but I unset all environmental variables, and tried running vkcube on each GPU like this. The first command gives me the bad output. The second command gives an error and vkcube doesn't pop up at all:

$ vkcube --gpu_number 0
Selected GPU 0: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, type: DiscreteGpu
$ vkcube --gpu_number 1
Selected GPU 1: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, type: DiscreteGpu

I tried using https://github.com/JoseD92/vkdevicechooser as well (I see it's no longer supported now). If I set VULKAN_DEVICE_INDEX, I can see one or the other GPU in vulkaninfo, but running vkcube I have the same issue. The first one gives me the window with the bad output. The second one doesn't give me the window at all:

Re: [SOLVED] Vulkan driver not working in computer with 2 GPUs

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

The second GPU is for rendering/AI

So you basically don't want it to show up in the GUI context anyway, right?

Try sth. like the bwlow, but first post the xorg log you're facing atm.

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "layout"

Re: [SOLVED] Vulkan driver not working in computer with 2 GPUs

I do use the second GPU with a GUI (local LLM while coding) but I can try whatever solution that isn't yanking a GPU if I want to play a game.

Re: [SOLVED] Vulkan driver not working in computer with 2 GPUs

You're currently running on the GPU on BusID "PCI:11:0:0", the GPU on BusID "PCI:5:0:0" is available fro prime offloading.
The posted config would preserve that setup, but inactivate the second GPU (hopefully)

Stupid question, what happens if you plug the monitor into the other GPU?
(W/o that config!)

Wow, not a stupid question. I plugged my monitor into the second GPU, rebooted, and it just works. It being vkcube, games, rendering, etc. That's all I needed to do! Thank you.

Are both PCI slots equal (PEGs)?

well - as mentioned: SLI (and crossfire for that matter) are a thing ofvthe past and no longer support
and although what you tried is a bit different to how multi-gpu used to work it comes down to you tried to use the secondary gpu to render but output the image through the primary one - and this is what's no longer supppported and hence causes issues
sure you can multiple gpus - but all on thier own with thier oen screens attached - hence my question on what you want to use the 2nd gpu for in the first place
so, as seth put it: your use case is to use the 2nd gpu as an accelerator only but not for active rendering to the screen, correct? what motherboard do you use? does it even provide 2 full x16 4.0 slots - aka a workstation board based on xeon or threadripper/epyc? or is this just some consumer grade hardware with one primary PEG slot and the others are just some additional provided by the chipset?
anyhow I would try to isolate the 2nd gpu (which can be a bit tricky as you use two identical ones) and enclave it in a container or vm and redirect whatever you want to use it for to that
also: to be effective in any way you want to use both gpus at once - just using the 2nd gpu for that AI stuff while your primary is idle or used for gaming is somewhat wasting - as you already have a 2nd gpu I recommend building an entire 2nd system for a couple 100 quit to fully utilize the power of that 2nd gpu - otherwise I would try to sell it as you waste it's potential - maybe because you not really understand your planed workflow yourself

It's not. They're split in 16x/4x slots right now for better cooling/noise, but I can just move the card to make it 8x/8x.

Also I need the 48GB VRAM in both cards combined to load LLMs. The PCIe bandwidth isn't as much an issue as not being able to load an entire model into VRAM since you're pretty limited on models that fit into 24GB. It is definitely not an ideal workstation setup, it's just my personal desktop that I slapped more (relatively) cheap VRAM into.

The GPU that works is in the 16x slot?

No, the GPU that works is in the 4x slot at the moment.
