[SOLVED] A Wi-Fi AP doesn't work after upgrading hostapd

I set up my Wi-Fi USB dongle EDUP AC1200 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz (the Realtek RTL8812BU chipset inside, driver) as a Wi-Fi access point in the 5 GHz band.

After upgrading hostapd from version 2.10-4 to version 2.11-4 the AP stopped working. I see the AP in WiFiAnalyzer, but with a narrower channel (20 MHz instead of 80 MHz). The first smartphone sees the AP, but can't connect. The second smartphone sees the AP, says that it uses WEP (which isn't correct), and asks for a password. It shouldn't ask for a password because it remembers the password. I can't enter the password anyway probably because WEP restricts its length too much. When I switch to the old version of hostapd, all smartphones connect without asking for a password. I can make the new version of hostapd work in the 2.4 GHz band though.

I see that there are many new options in the configuration file of the new version of hostapd, so probably, I didn't update my hostapd configuration correctly. Below is the hostapd configuration without commented lines.

“/etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf”:

Re: [SOLVED] A Wi-Fi AP doesn't work after upgrading hostapd

Was hostapd the only thing that got updated in that update or did other relevant packages (linux, linux-firmware etc.) also get updated? Also is this issue also present with the linux-lts kernel package?

I switched the version of hostapd several times since then. It's always the same. The new version doesn't work, but the old version works.

Re: [SOLVED] A Wi-Fi AP doesn't work after upgrading hostapd

Do you get any errors in dmesg (you can check the system journal so you won't have to re-test)  along the new hostapd version?

Re: [SOLVED] A Wi-Fi AP doesn't work after upgrading hostapd

Is the issue present in hostapd 2.11-2? You can obtain it from the ALA if it is not in the system's pacman cache.

Re: [SOLVED] A Wi-Fi AP doesn't work after upgrading hostapd

If you build the current hostapd PKGBUILD with the following diff (which is intended to downgrade the pkgver to 2.10 while keep all the other changes applied) does that work?:

That rules out any change in the PKGBUILD apart from package version being updated. It might be a there is a required config change that is needed with the update to 2.11. I would suggest using git bisection to locate the upstream commit that breaks hostapd for you.

If I execute

git checkout hostap_2_10

in hostapd-git from AUR, build, and start, hostapd dumps core. The `hostap_2_11` tag works as expected (with the issue in the first post).

Please apply the following change to the hostapd-git PKGBUILD so the pkgver reported will match the git checkout, the current version uses the newest upstream git tag.

If it's usual Git bisection, I've already done it. If I mark core-dumping versions as bad, the first bad commit is the hostap_2_10 tag.

If I mark core-dumping versions as bad

Don't. "git bisect skip" cailing or crashing builds - you need to convey the explicitly disfunction as "bad", not some unrelated issues.

The 2.10 version might be incompatible w/ your current config file?
Do you have a backtrace, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Core_d … _core_dump ?

I did that and got that the bad commit is the hostap_2_11. IMHO, the only option is to get version 2.10 from Git to work and move commit by commit from there forward.

If you set the git tag in the hostap-git PKGBUILD to hostap_2_10:

Then `makepkg -C` to clean the source dir then build it does that still core  dump?

I can make the hostapd-git package work in the following way.

Insert

Re: [SOLVED] A Wi-Fi AP doesn't work after upgrading hostapd

So you should be able to bisect it from there?
But I'd rather not

git add hostapd/hostapd.conf
git commit -m "hostapd.conf directories"

and the subsequent checkout would have "removed" that file?
And it's then probably also the cause for the crashes?

Yes.

No. This commit just changes the configuration file, but I use my own configuration file. As far as I understand, the crashes were caused by the broken compilation process of hostapd.

Re: [SOLVED] A Wi-Fi AP doesn't work after upgrading hostapd

I reversed the following commit in the hostapd package from the official Arch Linux repository. Hostapd works. Consider it solved.

commit 8056b79ff1e5d746a82c2ea12011e69e99c11d3d
Author: Jurijs Soloveckis <jsoloveckis@maxlinear.com>
Date: Wed Nov 1 11:11:03 2023 +0000

Add DSSS Parameter Set element only for 2.4 GHz

    From IEEE 802.11:
The DSSS Parameter Set element is present within Beacon frames
generated by STAs using Clause 15, Clause 16, and Clause 18
    PHYs.
The element is present within Beacon frames generated by STAs
using a Clause 19 PHY in the 2.4 GHz band.

Same is applied to the Probe Response frame.

Do not include the DSSS Parameters Set element when operating on other
    bands.

Is this the bug tracker for hostapd?
