How to enable a microphone?

My laptops mic is picked up by KDE but it is blackened out, i cant seem to select it. i am using gnome-sound recorder for it.

The Audio Controller is blackened out for Selection "Analog Stereo Duplex"
it has no entry when in selection "Analog Stereo Output" //Possibly only for output not sure
and for selection "Pro Audio" it activates but as soon as i record it switches back to headphone mic.

is there a systemctl command to enable some stuff? or a mic controller?

i dont know how to post images here, if you could tell me i could show you the KDE Settings page.

Re: How to enable a microphone?

I'm not following what your issue is. If you want to post screenshots load them to imgur or so and post the link here.

Can you also post the outputs of

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
arecord -l
pactl list cards
pactl list sources

wrapped in [ code ] [ /code] tags without the spaces

From what I can piece together the device is present? But not selectable? in gnome-sound-recorder or in the KDE applet or where?

Re: How to enable a microphone?

Mhm... that's usually a bug in pipewire configuration, or some kernel jack detection issues. You didn't create configuration for modprobe to the likes of dmic_detect=0 or snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1 did you?

Can you install alsa-utils, repost the

arecord -l
# This doesn't record audio?
parecord -d alsa_input.pci-0000_05_00.6.analog-stereo test.wav
# Or this?
arecord -Dhw:2,0 test_alsa.wav

I did not do any configuration for pipewire, i did try to once uninstall it to replace it with pulseaudio, but it was being used so it didnt actually do anything(i hope)

arecord -l

parecord -d  alsa_input.pci-0000_05_00.6.analog-stereo test.wav

records but no sound captured

arecord -Dhw:2,0 test_alsa.wav

Warning: Some sources (like microphones) may produce inaudible results
with 8-bit sampling. Use '-f' argument to increase resolution
         e.g. '-f S16_LE'.

Re: How to enable a microphone?

Try taking it up on the offer and change the command to

arecord -Dhw:2,0 -f S16_LE test_alsa.wav

if no permutation of the ALSA command works you're looking at kernel issues most likely, what's the exact laptop model?

The laptop model is MSI Thin A15 b16ucx
