6.12.1-zen1-1-zen Not usable after pacman update

Thankfully I have lts also installed and that works just fine.

Re: 6.12.1-zen1-1-zen Not usable after pacman update

What processes charges GPU and CPU?
Does this happen in an awesome session instead of Hyprland?
There's a blutooth hiccup, but nothing related to nvidia. But also see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=301357

I'll notice that you're using pulsenoaudio instead of pipewire - this is deliberate?

Here is an output from top:

   PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
    110 root      20   0       0      0      0 R  85.6   0.0   1:20.97 kworker+

So I guess it's Hyprland that isn't jiveing with the new kernel?

>> Does this happen in an awesome session instead of Hyprland?
No, this doesn't happen with awesome, that works just fine.

>> I'll notice that you're using pulsenoaudio instead of pipewire - this is deliberate?
No, I actually thought I was using pipwire. I think I will just uninstall pulseaudio. Thanks.ahhl

Re: 6.12.1-zen1-1-zen Not usable after pacman update

"man sudo" - otherwise what't the point of running "sudo true"?

So I guess it's Hyprland that isn't jiveing with the new kernel?

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=301356 - ignore the vulkan part.

eglinfo -B

But you're on nvidia - you also said "and GPU", what did nvidia-smi report?

But then there's also a kworker thread, are you running out of RAM?

I will post the same for 6.12.1.zen1-1 tomorrow:

Ah, then I shall comment on that … today, I guess (and hereby give you an excuse to bump the thread so I get a mail wink

It looks like this is written to the log every time the terminal prompt is generated. I have starship install and am using this module https://starship.rs/config/#sudo. I suspect it is generating this.

Re: 6.12.1-zen1-1-zen Not usable after pacman update

But then there's also a kworker thread, are you running out of RAM?

No, I was using about 4 of 16 GB

I'm no longer as sure about my initial assessment that the CPU and GPU where at 100%. There are a lot of graphical glitches, pixelation, some section not updating until way later and so on. There appears to be a lot of input lag or something similar. When writing to the terminal the last input is never shown, as in if I type hello world, the terminal only shows hello worl until I add a space at the end.

but maybe you had updated the kernel before but didn't reboot?

Since awesome (+picom?) is fine, what about sway?
Apparently hyprland moved away from wlroots, so it might be very specific to it more than anything else.

I suspect that Hyprland indeed ends up running in software emulation.

Re: 6.12.1-zen1-1-zen Not usable after pacman update

What about the 6.12 ./. LTS assertion?

Not sure what you are asking. The lts was updated at the same time zen was. lts still works fine

but maybe you had updated the kernel before but didn't reboot?

Looks like you were right about that.
According to this I updated the zen (6.11.09 -> 6.12.1) on2024-11-24

Re: 6.12.1-zen1-1-zen Not usable after pacman update

Not sure what you are asking.

This:

lts still works fine

b/c of sway and the low Hyprland VRAM use, try to *explicitly* add "nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=0" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters

Re: 6.12.1-zen1-1-zen Not usable after pacman update

try to *explicitly* add "nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=0"

I already have this in "/etc/default/grub", is there something more I need to do:

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Arch"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 quiet nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=0"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

And there is this in the journal:

Nov 29 18:34:40 arch-noob kernel: Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-linux-zen root=UUID=5b8a9184-d829-48e7-93b6-437549bfc857 rw loglevel=3 quiet nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=0

This is the case on LTS as well:

Nov 29 20:34:52 arch-noob kernel: Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-linux-lts root=UUID=5b8a9184-d829-48e7-93b6-437549bfc857 rw loglevel=3 quiet nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=0

Meh.
Did you test sway resp. is awesome being used along picom/glx?
Is this only for the initial Hyprland start or do subsequent hyprland sessions (w/o rebooting the system!) also exhibit this behavior?

Installed sway. It is working way better than hyprland. I noticed a weird issue while playing a YT video in full screen, the video freezes (only the video not the audio) if I move the mouse cursor to the other monitor. This is maybe not related.

I think I feel a tiny bit of input lag when typing in terminal that I don't notice when using LTS.

Also the memory usage looks way better:

I have no idea what that is. I don't have the "extra/picom" installed so I guess not

The subsequent sessions behave the same. I tried both closing hyprland and starting again from sddm and starting from another tty.

Re: 6.12.1-zen1-1-zen Not usable after pacman update

I enabled debug logging on Hyprland and grabbed the logs, bot for LTS and ZEN:
LTS: https://0x0.st/XRYW.log
ZEN: https://0x0.st/XRYy.log

There are a bunch of errors in the ZEN one

[ERR] renderer: couldn't create an EGLSync for out in endRender
[ERR] [EGL] Command eglCreateSyncKHR errored out with EGL_BAD_ATTRIBUTE (0x12292): _eglCreateSync
[ERR] eglCreateSyncKHR failed

Re: 6.12.1-zen1-1-zen Not usable after pacman update

Few differences I noticed in the debug logs:

lts:

[LOG] [AQ] drm: drmProps.supportsAsyncCommit: false
[LOG] [AQ] drm: drmProps.supportsAddFb2Modifiers: true
[LOG] [AQ] drm: drmProps.supportsTimelines: true

vs
zen

[LOG] [AQ] drm: drmProps.supportsAsyncCommit: false
[LOG] [AQ] drm: drmProps.supportsAddFb2Modifiers: true
[LOG] [AQ] drm: drmProps.supportsTimelines: false

lts:

[LOG] Using: OpenGL ES 3.2 NVIDIA 565.57.01

vs
zen

[LOG] Using: OpenGL ES 3.2 Mesa 24.2.7-arch1.1

This is in zen but not lts

[ERR] [EGL] Command eglQueryDeviceStringEXT errored out with EGL_BAD_PARAMETER (0x12300): eglQueryDeviceStringEXT
[ERR] [EGL] Command eglQueryDeviceStringEXT errored out with EGL_BAD_PARAMETER (0x12300): eglQueryDeviceStringEXT
[LOG] eglDeviceFromDRMFD: No drm devices found

Re: 6.12.1-zen1-1-zen Not usable after pacman update

On a formal note, please don't bump.
Edit your previous post to mend it if nobody has yet replied.

I tried running nvidia-smi on hyprland + zen and the video memory usage looks "normal"

ZEN:

|    0   N/A  N/A       652      G   Hyprland                                        2MiB |

LTS:

    0   N/A  N/A       679      G   Hyprland                                      699MiB |

It might simply just be a matter of how long that session has been running, though.

Here's your problem:

[LOG] Using: OpenGL ES 3.2 Mesa 24.2.7-arch1.1

You're running software emulation.

[LOG] [AQ] drm: Modesetting Unknown-1 with 2560x1440@60.00Hz
[ERR] [AQ] drm: Cannot commit when a page-flip is awaiting

That's the simplydumb device and indeed, the original journal in post #1

Nov 26 23:20:05 arch-noob kernel: simple-framebuffer simple-framebuffer.0: [drm] fb0: simpledrmdrmfb frame buffer device

WTF, smells like the hack has been removed (from at least that kernel)
1.

nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=1

enabling fbdev will allow the nvidia driver to take over from the simplydumb device, but there ongoing issues w/ fbdev, so you might run into those - notably since you've a pascal chip
2.

initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init

this should™ block the simplydumb device for good, along "nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=0"
3. do you get the same w/ the non-zen 6.12 kernel?

Doing this resolves this issue, but now I don't have don't have the other tty

initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init

this should™ block the simplydumb device for good, along "nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=0"

I added

initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init

via the GRUB menu.
Does basically the same as in 1. The input lag/ graphical glitches are gone but I don't have any tty
