Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

Hi

I am using Arch + KDE with Intel Arc IGPU on Core Ultra processors . Everything was fine until I noticed that after playing a video in VLC or MPV, the video and screen flickered slightly. This is even seen in SDDM. First I changed the Wayland session to X11, and this problem is also seen there even on X11. Although it is not available in Wayland, I set the compositor settings to OpenGL backend in config/kwinrc./~ but the problem was not solved. I read in a few threads that some people had flickering problems with the new Mesa version on KDE, so I also downgraded Mesa to version 24.3.1, 24.2.7, 24.2.6 but the problem was not solved.

I tested other desktops including Gnome and Mate with the latest Mesa version and this behavior is not observed.

Drivers are all up to date

glu 9.0.3-2
mesa 1:24.3.2-1
intel-media-driver 24.4.4-1
vulkan-intel 1:24.3.2-1
KDE 6.2.4
KDE Frameworks 6.9.0
Kernel: linux-6.12.7-arch1-1

Does anyone have any ideas for this?

Re: Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

Recent mesa and flicker issues where limited to amdgpu, have you tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … flickering or to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … _Xe_driver

i tested  https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … flickering before. and it didn't fix my problem

I did it now  https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … _Xe_driver.
dmesg shows that the xe module is loaded correctly and the i915 module is blocked for the pice in question. But the problem still exists.

Re: Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General and the output of "xrandr --verbose"
Can you elaborate on the "slight flicker"? Does it jerk between two frames, shutter (black, frame, black, frame, black, …) or do you get eg. stray artifact lines or blocks?
Does it help to ramp up the backlight to maximum (LED brightness control happens through - very rapid - shutter) and/or do you have an alternative output to test?

Regarding the description of these flickering, I should say that it acts like a shutter and you will see fast black shots on the screen. Usually when I play a video with vlc or mpv in full screen, the edges of the screen that are on the left and right flicker black and after watching for a while, they may become more intense or even in the middle of the screen, shutters with black color but fast can be seen. When you close the player, you will also see these black shutters in the kde and sddm environment itself. Especially in the bright or almost bright background. This may sometimes be resolved by rebooting the system, but it will not necessarily disappear on the first reboot and you will still see it. Sometimes the flickers are fast and very clear and sometimes mild.
For another test, I downloaded Big Buck Bunny 1080p 60fps short animation. To test this situation there as well. I didn't see these jumps and flicks in it. But they show up in the other two videos. The frame rate of both is 24fps. And they use the x265 1080p codec. At first I thought the problem was with the videos, but it's strange to see the flickering transfer to the desktop and SDDM environment.

I ran some tests to check for hardware acceleration.

I checked vainfo and the output was:

Re: Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

When you close the player, you will also see these black shutters in the kde and sddm environment itself.

The output/config looks unspectacular (1200p60, one output, modesetting driver) and since it affects xe and i915 modules

I always keep the screen brightness as high as possible. If I understand what you mean, unfortunately I don't have any other output display besides the internal display.

If I don't understand what you mean, please explain further. <3

Re: Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

No, the idea was to test whether the panel itself is to blame.
For a cross test, boot a different software stack (windows, some live distro like grml etc.) and see whether you get the same flicker there.

I will install Windows and post the result here. It seems that now the flickers are not visible in the KDe or SDDM after changing SDDM from xorg to wayland, but they are visible in the videos. It seems that the problem is hardware acceleration. Also I could not play the video with mpv and hardware acceleration.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

Job 1, 'mpv --hwdec=vaapi -v video.mkv' terminated by signal SIGSEGV (Address boundary error)

Do you get a https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Core_d … _core_dump for that?

Now the flickers are not visible in the user interface after switching from sddm to wayland but they are visible in videos.

Doesn't necessarily mean

to be a hardware acceleration problem

notably since you got the artifacts w/o video playback before.
Or is "now" "after switching from i915 to xe" and reliable/deterministic? Can you restore the status quo ante by switching to i915?

Might be a power state issue, what if you keep the CPU/IGP busy: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … Intel_CPUs ?

I'm on Windows now. There is no problem playing the same videos. It seems that Intel still hasn't released hardware acceleration for the kernel. In kernel 6.13, it seems that the basics of the Xe3 architecture acceleration have been added.

I read on the Intel forum that someone was also having trouble using the accelerator with Core Ultra processors, and finally solved the problem by installing Intel's non-free firmware for Debian.

Re: Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/ … type=heads doesn't set "ENABLE_NONFREE_KERNELS=OFF" so that should™ be the non-free build?
Or did you also move to the 6.13/mainline kernel?

Or did you also move to the 6.13/mainline kernel?

I haven't tried kernel 6.13.

Re: Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

So what exactly did you do?
Install some firmware from debian on arch or on debian?
Which specifically and how?

Since the arch intel-media-driver shoudl™ include the non-free firmware, this sounds a lot like fluke/coincidence and we should verify that something actually changed at all and you're not just witnessing the power of cosmic rays or so…

I apologize for the brevity of my previous post. I switched back to Windows today and the problem was not there. I only saw those non-free firmwares in Debian on the Intel forum and then I found them in the non-free Debian repositories but I didn't try Debian itself because I didn't want to get involved with Debian backports. I use the same intel-media-driver in Arch and normally there shouldn't be any problem running mpv with the accelerator but I get an error. I checked the error with coredumpctl. It seems to be a stack error. (I didn't understand much about it). I don't know what the problem could be.

I am attaching the link to the discussion in question on the Intel forum.

Re: Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

The firmware-intel-graphics listed there is covered by https://archlinux.org/packages/core/any/linux-firmware/ - do you lack that package?
Did you not encounter any file collisions when installing the debian package?

Hello again. I found the problem of the accelerator not running with mpv and it was related to the intel-media-driver which returns an unallocated address in arc gpu. Which is solved in intel-media-driver 25.1.0 (I got the build and installed it). But the flick problem does not seem to be from the accelerator. Because it has not been fixed. It does not seem to be a problem with the power settings. I think it is related to mesa or compositor kwin.

I also tested Fedora with KDE and the flicker was visible.
Let me be more specific, this flicker is very small and starts at the edges of the screen and usually reacts to bright spaces or bright spots. Something at the edges or anywhere on the screen.

And if it gets worse we will see it even sddm. This seems to be a problem with the mesa driver. I have not tested mesa 25 and I do not know for sure.

Re: Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

Does the debian firmware package also help on fedora?
To be very specific: you installed firmware-intel-graphics_20230625-3~exp3_all.deb from http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/n … e-nonfree/ ?
Not just the latest FW from https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … /tree/i915 ?

Didn't you run into file collisions?

Re: Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

I didn't install the Debian packages. The reason I didn't do that was because it didn't make sense to me because it includes the same things that are in linux-firmware. Also, that problem in the Debian forum was about the accelerator. I guessed that the flick could be from the accelerator, which it turns out wasn't. Because the accelerator not working was fixed with intel-media 25.1.0: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/inte … driver-git. But the flick is still there. Since this flick also spreads to sddm, it's probably a problem with mesa.
Fedora had no saving grace because its packages were older than Arch and its configurations were the same as mine. Logically, this problem must also be in Fedora, which was

Re: Flickering problem after playing video in KDE

Can you attach an external monitor and see whether the flicker exists there as well?
