[SOLVED] Steam games won't launch when they did previously

Hi, bare with me if I don't understand something, I'm new to Arch with only light experience in Linux.

So I had gotten Steam working, with Proton for games that are meant for Windows. Everything was great for a week or two, then suddenly games just weren't launching. I finally got it working again by installing Proton outside of steam using the aur... or so I thought. It apparently wasn't only the Windows games, it was all games. I went to launch EU4 a couple weeks later, which was the first game I played on Arch and it wouldn't launch... I've tried reinstalling steam and proton entirely, I've tried reinstalling drivers and I haven't been able to find anything helpful online.

I did launch through the terminal to see what errors pop up and got this:

Hi @FracturedMentality, welcome to the forums!

Are you using the steam or the steam-native-runtime package?
Try testing with both packages and provide the full terminal output.

What is the of:

$ pacman -Qm

For the drivers, provide the output of:

$ pacman -Qs 'va-api|vdpau|vulkan|nvidia|dkms|steam|gamescope|proton|amd|intel|wine|opengl|opencl|egl|xf86|xorg|wayland'

And install the pacman-contrib and expac packages, then provide the output of:

$ checkupdates

I'll be honest, I know I have native installed, but I think this is just basic steam. I'm not sure how to specify which in terminal.

You should be able to run steam-native-runtime by running:

$ steam-native # edit: not steam-native-runtime

It's currently an older version of Steam (version 1.0.0.75-4 vs 1.0.0.81-2), so this will help narrow down if a recent update to the steam package caused the issue.

In case it is located at a different binary path, run:

$ pacman -Fl steam-native-runtime

Huh, I know I installed it, I did it through pacman and it shows up in my start menu, but these are pulling nothing

Hmm... I'm away from my Arch system at the moment, so I can't get anything too detailed at the moment.
These threads mention updates to libcrypt causing issues or using LD_PRELOAD in the command line when starting steam, (there should be resources on Arch Wiki or other sites about LD_PRELOAD and command-line environment options)

The LD_PRELOAD message with regards to the overlay is normal and likely a red herring. If you go to the launch options and add

PROTON_LOG=1 %command%

what output do you get in the log with the gameid in your home dir? FWIW there was one occurrence were LD_PRELOAD="" might help there, if you've disabled the steam overlay, is that the case?

Does that work when it's not using Proton? This game runs on Linux. Also, would I be looking in compdata and what is the file labelled as?

Okay, I just got back to my Arch Linux PC.
Try setting EU4 to use Proton with "Force use of compatibility tools" under the game's "Properties" settings, and then try the tips from @V1del.

My mistake, steam and steam-native-runtime are actually shell scripts. Run GDB with:

$ gdb bash

Then inside of GDB, try starting Steam by running:

(gdb) run -x steam-native

If it crashes (or reaches a breakpoint), it may pause the program execution, keep running it with:

(gdb) continue

If it fully crashes, get the back-trace with:

(gdb) backtrace full

Use `help` for help with commands, and exit GDB with:

(gdb) quit

That explains my fight with it. So, using it this way provides nothing because steam isn't crashing, it's just not launching games. Would setting the LD_PRELOAD as a breakpoint add anything to the backtrace?

Something is causing only EU4 not to launch, `LD_PRELOAD` is an environment variable (not a breakpoint), it controls things like the linker for C/C++ libraries or other binarires. It's worth checking if changing it will give any useful output or results. As a warning, if you have your game drive mounted anywhere under the `/usr/` directory, this could also cause games not to launch with Proton.

Like @V1del says, try enabling "Force Use of Compatibility Tools" to use Proton with the game by editing the "Properties" settings under EU4's game settings.

Use the game with the edited start option (under the "Properties" > "Command" settings) for EU4's game settings:

Also try running both with and without the `LD_PRELOAD=''` environment variable.

With `LD_PRELOAD` env changed:

Well, it's not only EU4, it's ALL games through steam (proton in steam doesn't work, proton outside of steam does). EU4 is just what I wanted to play.

Trying to launch EU4 in proton is a whole separate issue where it refuses to install the EU4 launcher.

If proton log did make a log, I don't know where to find it. gdb still produces nothing because the steam app is not crashing.

Update, I've been going through the links you posted earlier. So far nothing has worked, but the LD_PRELOAD="" %command% DOES cause a change, though minor.

Leaving it blank (just the quotations) drops it to only one error:

Update, I found where the logs should be, but the Windows games run fine using the external Proton, so any data from that would be unrelated to my problem. Sorry for the lack of detail (I'll have more info later). I have a lead, but not enough time to test it yet. I wanted to share what I found with you.

Try checking these directories for more logs files, and post the 'ls -lahF -R' of each directory and the 'cat' contents of any texts files in these directories.

@V1del is correct, LD_PRELOAD is not the real problem here. The Steam Runtime Launcher Service looks like what's causing the issue:

The "/usr/bin/steam" executable file is a shell script, in my quick check it should say something like "exec /usr/lib/steam/bin-steam", post it so we can see.  Whatever file that "/usr/bin/steam" is executing, post that file too, post as many Steam shell script files as you find.
Somewhere there's a bug in a shell script, and Steam needs the Steam Runtime Launcher Service to be called by that shell script.

To try to save time, try using the Flatpak  version of Steam to see if it works (so you can at least try to get back to gaming again).
Or even try creating a temporary user on the system to see if it's a user configuration issue, then try to run Steam. If it works, it's all just a user config issue.

Hey, sorry for the delay. I've been slammed with school and other life issues. I think I've found I'm too busy for Arch right now, so I'm downgrading to Ubuntu until I'm in a better space in life. Not sure how to close this as unsolved, but I just don't have the time to fight with it right now.

Okay, 2 things.

1) When did Ubuntu get so bad? Last I used it was Version 12, now it's such a slow buggy mess that I decided to just try a clean slate with Arch (I'm sure I've made some mistakes that affected my experience).

2) Being back on Arch, I'm attempting Steam again, so far it's working. Now that I know that there might be an issue, I'm gonna watch for what I change so that if it fails, I have an idea what caused it.

Not sure if this thread should be closed or not, but if I find the cause I'd like to be able to post it for other's.

Ubuntu recently started pushing their Snap packaging format on users, with repercussions for performance and compatibility (like Firefox). Canonical has been chafing the community for a while now, like with the corporate overtake of LXD, the (formerly auto-installed) Amazon ads, Snapd forced auto-updates unless the SystemD unit is masked, etc...

It seems like it was some sort of issue with the system setup, glad a reinstall was able to fix everything! smile
If you ever do need the Steam logs, they should be in "$HOME/.local/share/Steam/logs" or "/tmp/dumps".
You could also prepend "[SOLVED]" to the post title, or change the post title to: "STEAM error 'sh: line 1: exec: steam-runtime-launcher-service: not found'"
I personally use [extra]/etckeeper for tracking system configuration changes, and git for user dot-files. Doing backups with Duplicity, rsync, Borg Backup, etc., would probably also be helpful too.

Well, I can't put the "Not found" thing because that was from the mistake in name. It wasn't found because it's supposed to be "steam-native" not "steam-native-runtime". I'll just add "Solved" for now and remove the LD_PRELOAD thing.

I'll have to look into that etckeeper thing.

FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER: There isn't a definite one, but a clean install fixed it. If I find the culprit, I'll post an update.

Nice, glad this issue is still resolved!
From your logs it seems like some sort of issue with the [extra]/steam package files since a reinstall of Arch completely fixed it.
