[SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

On Arch Linux KDE plasma 6 has strange performance issues on X11 session. Usually this occurs when interacting with panels or opening windows from the taskbar. Turning off floating panel lessens the lag but it still occurs.
When I use the Wayland session it is silky smooth with no lag
I have tested both nvidia-open and nvidia packages and both have the same issue.
I'm on kernel version 6.14.6-arch1-1 running KDE plasma 6.3.5 and nvidia driver version 570.144 using an RTX 4070.
Tried various fixes from google searches and none have worked thus far

Please don't paraphrase, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57855

Is there unusual CPU load during this? In what process(es)?
How many outputs (monitors) do you use?
Do you use (fractional) scaling fro HiDPI?
Does it happen when you suspend the compositor (SHIFT+Alt+F12)?

My apologies I haven't posted here in a good while and I'm not sure what logs I'm supposed to post for this

Not that I have noticed from htop, no.

seth wrote:

Only one.

seth wrote:

I don't own a retina monitor, so no I don't think so

seth wrote:

I'm unable to tell when disabling the compositor because the lag issue happens usually during animations like maximising and minimising windows from taskbar for interacting with the taskbar.

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

I'm not sure what logs I'm supposed to post for this

What have you tried and failed?

I'm unable to tell when disabling the compositor because the lag issue happens usually during animations like maximising and minimising windows from taskbar for interacting with the taskbar.

So it doesn't happen w/o the compositor and the problem actually *is* the compositor (animations)?

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Various fixes relating to nvidia that I found via searches that sounded similar to my problem. None seem to work with the only thing that helped being turning off floating panels.

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

So you've tried "things" and they "didn't work" - on a scale from one to useless, how much information do you think your explanation contain?

nvidia system, nothing troublesome in the xorg log.
Does this affect all clients or only some?
What about eg. xterm?

I'm sorry I'm a dumb retard I should do better. sad
From what I can remember I've tried setting environment variables:

__GL_SYNC_DISPLAY_DEVICE=DP-0
VDPAU_NVIDIA_SYNC_DISPLAY_DEVICE=DP-0
KWIN_X11_REFRESH_RATE=144000
KWIN_X11_NO_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=1
KWIN_X11_FORCE_SOFTWARE_VSYNC=1

fiddling around with nvidia-settings (OpenGL Flipping) and setting a conf in /etc/modprobe.d

Can you clarify? I'm not sure what you mean by client, terminal emulator I assume by you mentioning xterm?

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

Self-loathing is being addressed in a different thread.
There's a reason why that sticky and http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html exist - many people struggle with that.

So your previous efforts were all concerning VSYNC, but that is about tearing, not lagging.
How much does it "lag"? Can you link a screen recording?

I meant https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/xterm/ - and specifically. Not konsole or kitty or such.
The idea is that maybe only GL contexts are affected (because the nvidia driver is very slow to resize them and that will affect eg. all QML applications)
X11 applications are traditionally referred to as "clients" - to the X11 server.

Spectacle can't screen record on X11 so I will try recording it when I am able to, I am really sorry about that and please don't see it as me being a help vampire or anything sad

seth wrote:

I tried that and it lags too when opening it
What I've noticed is that it seems to be related to specifically plasmoids and panels. the X server itself is fine and doesn't lag, however interacting with the panel causes lag. even hovering my cursor over the panel causes it to noticeably delay.
There is lag when the program is being loaded from the panel or the applications menu. but there is no lag when opening from a terminal window or ctrl + E

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

Spectacle can't screen record on X11

Are you sure this is on X11?? Capture tends to be a problem on wayland.

Either way: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/FFmpeg#Screen_capture

specifically related to specifically plasmoids and panels

Which is implemented in QML…
Does the panel resize in any way shape or form when interacting with it?
Do you get the same w/ a fresh user account? (No custom widgets etc.)

There're actually lots of reports itr and they indeed do seem to revolve around the compositor and/or plasma completely botching the vblank sync - and the stuff you added would make it worse.

printenv
qdbus6 org.kde.KWin /KWin supportInformation

Remove all of those and instead try to add "__GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=0" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Environment_variables

tr '\0' '\n' < /proc/$(pidof kwin_x11)/environ
tr '\0' '\n' < /proc/$(pidof plasmashell)/environ

to make sure it actually applied to the relevant processes (setting stuff in your .bashrc might not work, depending on how you login)

As generic wildcard, also add "nvidia.NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters (won't work w/ the nvidia-open driver)

I had an error message that told me that directly while in X11 session
Here is a video of me showing the issue, it expires in a day, not sure how to embed it here as you need to download it.

I haven't noticed the panel resizing and can confirm it happens with a fresh user account as well.

seth wrote:

I removed the aforementioned variables and kernel parameters ages ago when i found they wouldn't fix the issue.
I set both this env variable in .xprofile (double checked it with tr), along with the nvidia.Nvreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0 kernel parameter @ /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf (and installing the nvidia package), neither fully got rid of the issue.

I feel as if it seems less laggy but that's not really based on anything and it still isn't anywhere as smooth as it is on Wayland.

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

So afaict from the video it's pretty much *only* the panel itself that lags in response to input events (at least w/ visual updates)?
Can you enter a taskbar button ignore what the panel does, click it immediately (even before the panel indicates the hover) and get the window to show w/o any delay?

Have you watched that video on a different devcie?
Event the panel doesn't seem to lag and update on the next frame when the cursor enters?

Please post the output of the commands in #10 and also how many fps does glxgears report?

On Arch Linux KDE plasma 6 has strange performance issues on X11 session. Usually this occurs when interacting with panels or opening windows from the taskbar. Turning off floating panel lessens the lag but it still occurs.

It still occurs with adaptive opacity and floating panels turned off. However turning it off *does* improve it quite a bit.

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

That’s strange because I had the same issue with my GTX-950 + Wayland X11 and turning off floating panels with adaptive opacity fully fixes this problem for me. No lags at all, smooth as silk. Using the same 570.144 driver, same kernel and plasma versions

Try to also export "QSG_NO_VSYNC=1 QT_QUICK_BACKEND=software"

how many fps does glxgears report?
Have you watched that video on a different devcie?
Event the panel doesn't seem to lag and update on the next frame when the cursor enters?

Ie please detail on what you consider to be lagging there.

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

Sorry I forgot to test glxgears
output of glxgears:

168404 frames in 5.0 seconds = 33680.734 FPS

I believe it is only the panels that are lagging. KWin itself seems to be running smoothly, likewise with the X server itself.

QSG_NO_VSYNC=1 and QT_QUICK_BACKEND=software did something!
I exported the env variable and the panel is MUCH smoother now. Only annoyance is that the desktop icon names have a translucent black background but I don't think that amtters as it seems the issue has vanished now.

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

This disables HW rendering - you should remove the other variables (__GL_*) and see whether QT_QUICK_BACKEND=software alone "fixes" it.
Idk what the panel is doing there but suspect it's somehow reszing or recreating GL contexts.

Somebody also might want to inform upstream.
If they know that the performance on nvidia/glx sucks, they might want to set the backend to software in plasma (ideally testing for the environment and not just steamrolling over it)

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

Had this same issue for years, never found a way to fix it (apart from disabling hardware rendering). I ended up switching to Wayland when it became usable on Nvidia. It didn't only occur on the Plasma panel, but also on certain hw-accelerated applications (e.g. Steam). I doubt there's something users can do to solve this, it's probably on Nvidia's side.

Steam runs exclusively on X11 (in doubt via xwayland) - cannot be the same issue.

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

It doesn't occur on Steam via XWayland, only on pure X11. I'm quite sure it's the same issue, I had the exact same symptoms – especially the floating panel, which is outright unusable for me on X11, and launching apps from the taskbar. I also have the same GPU.

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

How do you suppose the nvidia GPU/driver has performance issues on X11 but not on X11?

I don't doubt that you had the same issues w/ plasma but am fairly confident that whatever has fixed steam for you is not that it now runs on xwayland.
Is this a hybrid graphics system (ie. did you maybe switch the steam GPU)?
I could also imagine that the problem isn't w/ steam but some compositor?

Re: [SOLVED] Kde plasma 6 lag on X11 with nvidia drivers

I don't know, but I can assure you that even today if I run Steam on X11 the whole graphical environment slightly stutters in certain moments (e.g. when I start it or when I resize its window and so on).

Nope.

seth wrote:

That's more likely. At any rate I'm not looking for a solution, since I'm happy with Wayland. I just wanted to add my two cents.
