Delay on keyboard input Xorg

Hello there,

a few updates ago, I've noticed rofi having some input lag on typing and deleting. First I thought it's a rofi specific problem, but then I've noticed the same problem on claws-email, and the teamspeak mic-icon is also having about 1s delay, when showing usage. I'm literally at a loss on what could be the problem. It's only happening on my desktop, not the laptop or work-pc.

For example, if I type some text in claws, and then hold the backspace key to delete, the cursor doesn't move linearly, but deletes some chars, freezes and then continues where it should have been.

Trying to record it with obs somehow fixes it, as long as obs is running...no idea what's happening...

No compositor running, and the powerlevel of my amd 7900gre (high/low) doesn't make a difference.

What happens if you remove the DP output and only run w/ the HDMI one (nb the bus doesn't matter, the concern is the multiscreen and the GSM monitor specifically because of VRR)

Your OBS findings suggest it's more output than input related (and there're no event processing problems in your xorg log)  - I assume glxgears serves the same purpose?
Do you get the same w/ xf86-video-amdgpu?

Replacing vulkan-radeon with xf86-video-amd fixes it. Strangely enough, switching back to vulkan-radeon without rebooting keeps it fixed. But after a reboot, it's broken again.

xf86-video-amdgpu is not somehow a replacement for vulkan-radeon and as long as you don't restart the X11 server you can juggle packages as much as you want, the impact will only ever show on the next server start.

So it's the modesetting driver/glamor - w/o xf86-vidoe-amdgpu, globally export "LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=1", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Enviro … s#Globally

Unfortunately this seems to make things worse, since now even my terminal is lagging.

But it's not immediatley on X start, but rather 1 or 2 minutes after starting.

Ok, DRI3 becomes mandatory in a short while anyway.
Status quo: modeset/glamor stalls, af86-video-amdgpu doesn't.


Did you check whether eg. glxgears has about the same impact as OBS?
What if you globally "export vblank_mode=0"? (Somewhere in etc/profile, has to apply to the X11 server)
How's the performance on xf86-video-amdgpu otherwise, viable mitigation?

Sorry, forgot to mention that running glxgears has the same impact as running obs: the lag is gone.

Tried "export vblank_mode=0": Still lagging
Tried f86-video-amdgpu again: Still lagging...

But I've noticed something. As soon as I start halloy (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/halloy), the lagging begins. If I close it, it's gone. If I open it again it's lagging, and then it doesn't matter if I close it, it keeps lagging. Running obs/glxgears while halloy is open fixes the lagging though.

Edit: Same with thunderbird. As soon as I open it, the lagging starts.

And just to be clear: the lagging then happens (also?) in other clients, not (only) in tbird/halloy (which utilizes the rust "iced" GUI framework)

Do electron clients ("chromium") also trigger this?

- chromium

These applications don't lag themselves, they just cause others to start lagging.

Lagging application:
- claws-mail
- rofi

Applications not causing lagging after startup:
- signal-desktop
- telegram-desktop
- inkscape
- steam
- gimp
- teamspeak3

Running glxgears/obs while having halloy/thunderbird/chromium open fixes the lagging, as long as the are open.

Haven't tried xterm before, but after testing, xterm is also lagging, yes.

The other programs I've listed are the ones I'm using regularly.

Literally no errors from dmesg/journal to show, squeaky clean.

thunderbird some something™ which causes infrequent udpates for some clients but can be overcome with continuous updates by eg. glxgears and also thunderbird itself updates fine…

No compositor running

So let's just change that - what happens if you run picom?

And though it seems insane: does this also happen w/ eg. openbox instead of i3?

Running picom with absolutely everything off doesn't change anything. But enabling vsync in picom fixes it, altough only for some time. Not sure yet if picom is just crashing or what's going on.

Running openbox didn't have any effect.

* Are tbird, and chromium from the repos? Or flatpaks?
+ Do you get the same w/ the LTS kernel? Or 6.14.9 ?

1. not the ddx driver (modesetting or xf86-video-amdgpu)

4. some clients make some other clients stall/lag updates
5. constant updates by at least some GL client drag the stalling clients along
6. no compositor and presence is borderline irrelevant
