This sure sounds like the kind of problem people are going to say I should have found the solution on my own but, I haven't. I have a laptop using a USB ethernet adapter and network manager. It works but, when I use the ethernet adapter, wireless attempts (unsuccessfully) to connect even though the wired connection has been established. I can disconnect the wireless (still spinning) connection in network manager applet and everything works. It doesn't try to connect again. So, I can live with it but, I'd rather not. Any help would be appreciated.

What is your goal exactly? Disable the known wireless connection only if the USB Ethernet adapter is up? Is the WiFi out of reach in that case?

Thanks for the reply.
I really only use wireless when I'm using my laptop away from my desk. My preference would be to have the wireless connect in the absence of a wired connection and that is how it worked at one time. I was having some other issues so I'm not certain when it stopped working that way. What's happening now is that the wired connection succeeds but, it tries to make the wireless connection anyway. Until I stop it by disconnecting the wireless connection through the Network Manager Applet, the icon in the tray spins as if it's waiting on a connection. I'm not sure whether I actually have a working connection while that spinning thing is going on. I'm programmed to think it means I don't have a connection but, it's possible that I do.

NM is supposed to prefer the wired connection anyway, please post the output of
find /etc/systemd -type l -exec test -f {} \; -print | awk -F'/' '{ printf ("%-40s | %s\n", $(NF-0), $(NF-1)) }' | sort -f

Does that mean you don't need any WiFi connection at your desk?
If yes, just delete those saved, reachable WiFi connections (in "Network connections").

Thank you both for replynig.

While I don't use wireless at my desk, I do use it in other parts of my home. I'd prefer not to have to specify the password every time.

replace pulseaudio w/ pipewire-pulse and pipewire-media-session w/ wireplumber (the other two services are turning bitrot) but you don't have a concurrent network manager or explicit wpa_supplicant/iwd service…
Please post your complete system journal for an affected boot:
sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st
for the running one.

I seem to remember that I had to leave that pulsesudio stuff in to get a volume icon in the tray. That was some time back though. There are likely alternatives now.
Now you're going through my journal. Heaven knows what other sloppy stuff you're going to find. OTOH I'm pretty much self taught. Any constructive criticism is a chance to learn.

What sticks out a bit is that there's two ethernet devices, one is a USB dongle and that seems the one you're using (…as, on a closer read, your OP states )
No idea whether and which part of that irritates NM. Can you try to use the e1000e NIC and unplug the ethernet dongle?
You could perhaps https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … plugged_in ?

This thing might have a NIC but, it doesn't have a port for it. It does have a weird port that I suspect is supposed to work for it but, everything I've found to plug into it. including from Lenovo (the manufacturer) hasn't worked.
It's about time for dinner here. I'll try to look at that dispatcher tomorrow. Thanks for your help!

Seems it has a micropeni… micro ethernet port, do you something like https://www.amazon.de/Lenovo-ThinkPad-E … B00LPRQ5UG ?

That worked! I'm a bit surprised. I thought it was just for the situation where you were already connected and unplugged the ethernet but, it seems to work on startup too.
Thanks! Now to look at that pulseaudio stuff.

Thanks for looking at it but, those don't work. I tried one. Last I looked, all Lenovo sold for these things was USB ethernet adapters. I suspect there's a design issue here.
