Quick Relpy enabled would help the forums [lower bandwitdh]

now that this forum has more tha 1000 users (1046  at the time of the writing) I think that Quick Reply should be there.
with Quick Reply one can reply (post) with only one click (request).
without it (as it is now) one has to do two clicks (requests).
is it me or with quick reply enabled the forum will gain 50% of speed?

think about it tongue

Re: Quick Relpy enabled would help the forums [lower bandwitdh]

never seen that feature before.... that being said i don't see the two click process you are talking about. unless you mean click (to start wrinting a post/reply), write your response, click to post. that lall i ever have to do and i don't understand how it can be shorter.  :?

Re: Quick Relpy enabled would help the forums [lower bandwitdh]

use "links" or another console browser to surf the turbo-experience (i'm writing now from such a one)

the big advances:

- no images
- no advertisements

the little disadvantage:

- some links are shown double (has technical reasons: phpbb)

- it do not look that nice (detail)

but it is really fast!!

open a console and type:

links bbs.archlinux.org

you will feel the speed :-)

Re: Quick Relpy enabled would help the forums [lower bandwitdh]

well anyways.. try some forums you might be a registered user, and you will find it.

I really hope the admin of this forum will think about my proposal.
TWO REQUESTS (reply and post) WILL BECOME ONE [just post]

Re: Quick Relpy enabled would help the forums [lower bandwitdh]

Zeppelin, I'm not a member in Linux-Questions either. I guess the theory is to already provide a text-entry form by default - that's the only way I could imagine how this works.

dp, are the double links in links due to images ? In Lynx, at least you can chose to include links for images, or not.

Other "turbo" browsers : dillo (which I use almost exclusively, including for this post), or w3m - with w3m you have a text-browser with images - sort of cool.

Re: Quick Relpy enabled would help the forums [lower bandwitdh]

andy, use elinks is even better than links
anyways the point is now only how fast a user will reply, but (i think) that this saves bandwitdh and SQL load

I agree this would be a good idea if possible. I always use this on LQ. Once you've learned the codes/smileys, there's no need to do it the long way anymore.

Re: Quick Relpy enabled would help the forums [lower bandwitdh]

I would imagine and hope that phpBB 2.2 will release with the ability to have quick reply as a default setting... but for now us sorry 2.0.x users will have to sufice with a BETA mod... I've gone through the trouble of even finding it for you guys, cause Im actually considering applying it to my own forums... if Arch forums just installs EasyMOD this thing can go in and start working in a couple of minutes.

Link to Qucik Reply mod (BETA) for phpBB v2.0.6: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.ph … uick+reply

I agree 100% with zeppelin that this will save bandwidth (provided people use it). I ALWAYS use the quick reply on GooeyLinux, but that's invision so of course it has Quick Reply. If this will be a serious consideration by the admins here, I will have no problems installing it on my fourms first to make sure it will go in right on here. And of COURSE, always BACKUP.

Re: Quick Relpy enabled would help the forums [lower bandwitdh]

I'm glad raising up an issue that almost everyone seems to agree with me smile

I believe about 30% of the avg users use Quick Reply [but even that means less server bandwitdh tongue]

ps. Archers are not avg users tongue

Using links, lynx, elinks, or any other text browser, how do you tell which threads have new posts?  I rely on the little colored bells on the left to know which forums and threads have new posts.  Do these graphical indicators translate into some obvious text indicator in a non-GUI browser?

Um, okay, maybe they're not "bells"    Whatever they are ... notes? ... they change color when there is an unread post.

Re: Quick Relpy enabled would help the forums [lower bandwitdh]

yes, they do translate into a text equivalent. on my forums i have pared it down a bit, it was too long to be useful for any real posting. i think i am going to write a new template for my forums though, specifically for text browsing. my main site works fine for that, though. i'm thinking im going to do it in xml.
