Starting a website

I have an old Desktop (specs below), which I would like to start a website with.  The problem is, I do not know where to start.

First, I followed the LAMP wiki page, and did all the stuff to install apache.  I left out the php and mysql stuff because a) I did not know what it was, and b) Once I found out, could see no use for it with what I wanted to do, which is make a webpage on the internet.  Nothing fancy.  Apache works, because the "test page" comes up fine.

I signed up with the dyndns.org guys and got a DNS name attached to my IP.

If I knew all the individual things I need to do,  I could manage to figure them out, but my problem is that I don't even know what to do, much less how to go about doing it.

Any nod in the right direction would help greatly.

I also have a Linksys WRT54G router, which my desktop goes through, along with four other computers.  I have DSL, if that is important (yes, I know it will crawl, but it's a start).

Re: Starting a website

Well, obviously the most important part of setting up a website isn't setting up a http server or making it accessible to the outer world, but creating the website itself ;-)

First of all, you should obviously learn the basics of HTML. There are surely some basic courses online. HTML editors like bluefish, quanta or nvu could assist you in your quest. At least the latter two support WYSIWYG.

As for the router, you have to forward the port (default is 80) to your desktop's IP, in order to make the site accessible from the ether.

Re: Starting a website

I can already write decent HTML, that was never the problem.  I even have the layout set up already.  I should have said that earlier.

The problem is viewing the page over the net.

Re: Starting a website

At what stage is the problem?

I assume you've put the file in the webroot (for Apache, that's probably the htdocs directory)?

Then you type your dyndys domain into a web browser and it should go to your IP and ask Apache for the file, who will either return it to the browser, or send back a 404 or other error message as appropriate.

As mentioned, you may need to enable port forwarding on the router, but also make sure you have your firewall(s) configured to accept incoming requests on port 80.

Re: Starting a website

I hope you're on business DSL. Most ISPs don't allow servers on residential DSL accounts. Some even go so far as to block incoming traffic on port 80.

Look at your terms of service to see what restrictions you have to work with.
