[SOLVED] Stuck on 60hz on 144hz capable monitor

Hi all, hoping some kind internet soul can help. 144hz capable monitor is stuck only showing 60 Hz, 59.94 Hz and 50.00 Hz in KDE System settings > Display & Monitor > Display Configuration > Refresh Rate. I swear had it running at 144 Hz on this computer but had to reinstall OS because of an unrelated oops on my part. Ever since reinstall has been stuck at 60. Tried for awhile trying to tinker and fix but got nowhere. I have been using arch for maybe half a year and read through other similar newbie corner threads but don't know enough about what I am looking at when it comes to graphics stuff and the issue is probably staring me in the face.

Setup info:

  • KDE Plasma DE

  • Wayland

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080

  • Nvidia proprietary drivers.

  • Kernel: 6.17.7-arch1-1

What I have tried/done:
In /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

MODULES=(nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm)

And removed kms from the hooks

In /etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 quiet nvidia-drm.modeset=1"

And I ran mkconfig after

# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Saw this asked for in another of other threads.

Re: [SOLVED] Stuck on 60hz on 144hz capable monitor

Can you be more specific on your Nvidia drivers? You should be using nvidia-open.

I am just using the nvidia package. I consulted the NVIDIA guide on the arch wiki, which says for the Ada Lovelace (NV190/ADXXX) gpu family I should be using the nvidia pakcage for standard linux kernel.

That is not at all what it says. It says that Ada Lovelace is the last one supported by the closed modules, not that you should be using it.

Thanks, @Scimmia; thought I was seeing things. My 4060 has been running nvidia-open since I bought it last year.

Sorry, I have misunderstood then. Going back and re-reading the wiki page it now still not entirely clear. I was running the closed nvidia package just fine for 144hz before but I will try nvidia-open.

It's unlikely it will make a difference, more likely related to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=310035

You my friend are a legend. Thread held the answer. Downgraded 3 packages to versions 580.95.05-1 and now working fine:

  • nvidia-utils

  • nvidia-dkms

  • lib32-nvidia-utils

Have not done nvidia-open yet but issue is solved and will investigate that on my own. Cheers for the help.
