this way, closing mate-screenshot didn't exit it.
i had to do ^C and then did the cat:
p.s.: in system monitor i see many glycin-image-rs processes sleeping (and one glycin-svg, but it disappears and reappears [sleeping too] sporadically without trying to do a scrsht)

The glycin behavior is otr and aligns w/ the start of your problems which is why I'd like to test getting it out of the equation w/ the noglycin variats (but you'd have to build the or see whether they're in the chaotic-aur repo)
The tool seem to create a temporary /tmp/mate-screenshot.*/Screenshot.png - can you open that (after taing the screenshot, before exiting the tool)?

does flameshot work?

what means 'otr,' please?
would not be a problem to build the noglycin but as i said i'd rather avoid to install all the dependencies.

now there are already many directories mate-screenshot.xxxxx.0/ each containing a file Screenshot.png with size 0

yes, it works great! thank you!

"on the record"
Do you do anything to harden the system (apparmor, firejail, the linux-hardened kernel)?
If it is glycin related, things like scrot or flameshot (Qt6) will likely work, but gdk-pixbuf2 is a critical library in GTK, so you'll likely run into other issues.
There're no explicit rebuilds so you might give gdk-pixbuf2 2.44.1-3 a shot. The *exact* version had glycin disabled.

/tmp isn't full?

Understandable but unfortunately https://aur.chaotic.cx/packages?search=glycin comes back empty

no.
/tmp isn't full.
btw, /tmp contains over 200 files named
gdk-pixbuf-glycin-tmp.nnnnF3 and a few .nnnnG3
all small (few KB). when i try to open one (e.g. with gimp), it disappears, i.e. no longer exists.

uuuh!

I downgraded to gdk-pixbuf2 2.44.1-3 and mate-screenshot now functional.
*** but won't it be replaced by latest version automatically on next system update? ***

see my edited last post:
> I downgraded to gdk-pixbuf2 2.44.1-3 and mate-screenshot now functional.
But now can no longer view .HEIC images with pqiv. it shows error:
> Derived Image item of type tmap is not implemented. Update your FFmpeg version to the newest one from Git. If the problem still occurs, it means that your file has a feature which has not been implemented.
using yay i installed aur/ffmpeg-git 8.1.r121357.g7896cc67c1-1 (+74 0.16)
which was quite a long job compiling hundreds of source files, but pqiv can still not open .HEIC (shows images only partly).
Then i installed xviever from aur, but starting it, i get the error:
> CinnamonDesktop-Message: 11:33:26.135: Ignoring thumbnailer with missing binary: '/usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-thumbnailer'
it seems to be related to gdk-pixbuf2 (since i found no other arch linux related info, the following is a quote from https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/ … 147869/11)
> gdk-pixbuf2 is supposed to provide gdk-pixbuf-thumbnailer.thumbnailer in /usr/share/thumbnailers.

Ok, at least we know where this is coming from.
But now can no longer view .HEIC images with pqiv. it shows error:
You'll have to downgrade libheif, https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/ … mmits/main
However this is in no way a long term strategy.
You might want to chime in with https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-utils/issues/369 and probably start looking for a different, non-gdk based desktop environment.
I'd not bet on this clusterfuck ever getting resolved, starting w/ upstream having no intention to resolve this.

I get confused. which one is non gdk-based, please? i see there are so many: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Desktop_environment
and which one of the non-gdk based are actively developed, stable, and similar in comfort and weight to Mate?
Gnome 3, GNOME Flashback?
maybe change to KDE?

Anything remotely using gtk is prone to be using gdk-pixbuf2, stuff that uses Qt and EFL (enlightenment/imagemgick) not so much.
Also please don't panic - for now it only affects the screenshot¹ and you've viable substitutes. I'd just *start* snooping around for gtk alternatives because this is probably gonna be another "we don't care about anything bug core gnome applications" situation…
¹ speaking of which: does the mate screenhot tool w/ the glycin-infected gdk-pixbuf2 allow you to save screenshots into /tmp (ie. anything that's not restricted to your UID)?

upgraded gdk-pixbuf2 to latest version.
mate-screenshot hangs as before even when chosing to save to /temp
(but pqiv works for HEIC again and i can live with flameshot.
guess i should downgrade ffmpeg too in order to get automatic updates from repo?
$ pacman -S ffmpeg
resolving dependencies...

:: ffmpeg-2:8.0-3 and ffmpeg-git-8.1.r121815.g0ae8df5f2c-1 are in conflict. Remove ffmpeg-git? [y/N] i used KDE for a while ages ago but didn't like the look. maybe in the meantime it looks less windows-fashioned.

Probably - your heic problems were not related to that anyway.

You could try lxqt. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/enlightenment16 was unfortunately dropped into the AUR, otherwise you could recreate something close to gnome 1 ![]()
Report on the mate-screenshot situation upstream, they'll have to fix/work around that if they intend to maintain mate ![]()
