Re: lightdm: unable to contact settings server

We can't help without actual data, so please Post complete logs/output/versions/error messages. Post your system logs (journalctl as root) and Xorg logs (if running Xorg).

Re: lightdm: unable to contact settings server

the journalctl doesn't show anything related.

Let's see. *After* attempting to start xfce

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

The errors suggests a problem w/ xfsettingsd and the lightdm log shows

[+8.94s] DEBUG: Seat seat0: Greeter stopped, running session
[+8.94s] DEBUG: Registering session with bus path /org/freedesktop/DisplayManager/Session0
[+8.94s] DEBUG: Session pid=146011: Running command /etc/lightdm/Xsession startxfce4

[+8.95s] DEBUG: Activating VT 7
[+9.98s] DEBUG: Session pid=146011: Exited with return value 1

what will leave traces in the journal for sure.

Maybe there's also more in ~/.xsession-errors
You can also try to log into a naked X11 session (just an xterm) and run startxfce4 from that xterm.

Re: lightdm: unable to contact settings server

here's the journalctl logs

here's the xsession errors:

Failed to connect to user scope bus via local transport: $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS and $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not defined (consider using --machine=<user>@.host --user to connect to bus of other user)
dbus-update-activation-environment: error: unable to connect to D-Bus: Using X11 for dbus-daemon autolaunch was disabled at compile time, set your DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS instead
dbus-update-activation-environment: error: unable to connect to D-Bus: Using X11 for dbus-daemon autolaunch was disabled at compile time, set your DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS instead
Failed to connect to user scope bus via local transport: $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS and $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not defined (consider using --machine=<user>@.host --user to connect to bus of other user)
dbus-update-activation-environment: error: unable to connect to D-Bus: Using X11 for dbus-daemon autolaunch was disabled at compile time, set your DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS instead

i'll try the naked x11 later because i don't think it will do anything because startxfce4 does work in .xinitrc

You somehow logged in this morning, ran an Xfce4 session, at 10:26 the xfce panel crashes, later there's a truckload of lid events inbetween the X11 server dies(?) and you log in on tty3.
But xfce4 seems to be still running??

Re: lightdm: unable to contact settings server

here's the journal again

also i don't have lightdm on startup so i have to start it after logging in, but that shouldn't change anything. the logging into tty3 was so i could launch xfce4 to post that

try to log into a naked X11 session (just an xterm) and run startxfce4 from that xterm.

You can also just startxfce4 from the console instead of starting lightdm

Re: lightdm: unable to contact settings server

This does work?

with startxfce4 inside the .xinitrc

See the last link below on what to include at least in your xinitrc (2nd blue note)

Re: lightdm: unable to contact settings server

this is what's in my .xinitrc:

startxfce4

if [ -d "$xinitdir"/xinitrc.d ] ; then
	for f in "$xinitdir/xinitrc.d"/?*.sh ; do
		[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
	done
	unset f

Re: lightdm: unable to contact settings server

if [ -d "$xinitdir"/xinitrc.d ] ; then
	for f in "$xinitdir/xinitrc.d"/?*.sh ; do
		[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
	done
	unset f
fi

keepassxc &
startxfce4

The tail after startxfce4 won't be reached until xfce4 ends.

Re: lightdm: unable to contact settings server

ok, but i know that won't fix it due to how i originally just had startxfce4 in there before adding the needed if and keepassxc

Re: lightdm: unable to contact settings server

First and foremost including the logind environment is not uncritical and *expecially* necessary to access the session bus, so you *know* after you *tried*
Second: if running startxfce4 from startx/xinit doesn't work either the plan would still be to just "xterm"  instead of "startxfce4" (install and use xterm until we know we can trust the XFCE terminal to start) and then interactively run "startxcfe4" from that xtrem and see what it tells you.
