After a recent update terminal text is slow to display/X11 windows lag

After an upgrade earlier this week or so suddenly my machine lags when I run commands in my terminal (xterm) such as:
- dmesg
- journalctl -k --no-pager
- resize X11 windows

This problem has never existed before and nothing outside of the recent upgrade has changed.

Your rendering in software for sure, no idea whether that can explain the symptoms.

What was in those updates?

Re: After a recent update terminal text is slow to display/X11 windows lag

Yup this is a VM with virtiogpu which unfortunately has been running llvmpipe (software rendering mesa).

However I've been running this vm as my daily driver for over a year with no issues. The latest update just borked things so my terminal display lags hard.

pacman log with relevant updates (grep tty)

Re: After a recent update terminal text is slow to display/X11 windows lag

grep tty

https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/libptytty/
Hold on, is this strictly tied to using urxvt?

Otherwise

Re: After a recent update terminal text is slow to display/X11 windows lag

What did you then mean to imply by "grep tty"?
Is this strictly tied to using xterm or does it affect *any* X11 window?

What's up w/ the virgl* stuff?
Mitigational effort or potential cause?

I grepped for tty because I assumed an update related to tty broke things.
It's not strictly xterm. Terminals seem to render text slowly and windows no longer render while being resized. They used to.
The virgl stuff is a tangent I've been trying to mitigate this problem with, and have failed so far heh.

Re: After a recent update terminal text is slow to display/X11 windows lag

w/ all the haskell stuff in the update, do you use xmonad as WM?
Same problem w/ eg. openbox?

There's not much else, pango and gtk3 would affect (only) gtk(3) clients hmm

Re: After a recent update terminal text is slow to display/X11 windows lag

I have noticed tons of haskell updates in general. I don't use xmonad. I actually run a nice lightweight wm called evilwm.

If you roll back the suspected update, does that actually resolve the problem?

Re: After a recent update terminal text is slow to display/X11 windows lag

I tried rolling back to the beginning of march but got errors relating to LUA54 which caused it to fail.

Re: After a recent update terminal text is slow to display/X11 windows lag

got errors relating to LUA54

Please don't paraphrase, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57855

I'd suspect what that you ran into lua55 becoming lua and lua becoming lua54, but that was last december…?

Edit: it might help to downgrade incrementally, ie. first to March 15th and then March 1st

Re: After a recent update terminal text is slow to display/X11 windows lag

My mistake.

This is the result of trying to downgrade to "Server = https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2026/03/21/$repo/os/$arch"

Re: After a recent update terminal text is slow to display/X11 windows lag

You're crossing the lua version change - this is likely coming from pandoc ?

pacman -Rdd lua54-lpeg lua54 # remove ignoring deps
pacman -Syyuu # downgrade
pacman -S --asdeps lua-lpeg lua # re-install as deps if the downgrade didn't pull the packages anyway
