MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

Hello everyone,
I'm experiencing frequent kernel panics and Wi-Fi dropouts on my ASUS TUF laptop running Arch Linux.

Symptoms:
- Wi-Fi suddenly disconnects, the icon disappears, and wlp3s0 is completely gone from `ip addr`
- A normal reboot doesn't bring it back.
- When it crashes, it triggers a kernel panic

A normal reboot doesn't bring it back.

And what brings it back?

Oh thank you, I tried LTS and it fixed the problem

I think I should keep this and wait for the next update

Re: MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

Sorry for not clarifying

A normal reboot doesn't bring it back.

That means rebooting cannot fix this error

PS: What should I do now with this computer that has an MT7921 network card? This is the sixth time I've had an internet problem.

Re: MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

Hello everyone,
I'd like to ask if there are any bugs or issues with the MT7921 driver in the latest Linux version?

Within two days, I've experienced three kernel panics. The second time, the error was identified by scanning a QR code on the panic screen:

During the first and third panics, I couldn't scan the QR code because I was working; the screen was stuck on my screen, and the characteristic blue screen of kernel panic didn't appear.
The kernel panic temporarily goes away when I switch to linux-lts, but as soon as I boot back into the mainline kernel (currently 7.1.2-arch3-1), the instability returns. This time, when checking dmesg, I saw the following line:

Looking closely at the log timeline:
1. The driver fails to communicate with the hardware (`Message timeout` and `driver own failed`).
2. The hardware fails to reset (`chip reset failed`).
3. This triggers a supervisor write access page fault (`#PF`) in mt76_dma_add_buf, leading directly to the `Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt`.

At the same time, the dmesg output shows a clear ACPI table conflict right at the WLAN slot (GPP6.WLAN._S0W reports AE_ALREADY_EXISTS), causing the kernel to skip parsing that AML opcode.

Is this a known regression in the mt76/mt7921e driver on recent kernels combined with certain ASUS AMD platforms, or is my Wi-Fi card experiencing a physical hardware failure?

If it is a software/firmware power management conflict, are there any to fix this?

Any insights or workarounds would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much !!!

Re: MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

The 6.18 lts kernel is expected to be in archlinux repos until january or february next year, so there is time.

Can you use ethernet and disable wifi/bluetooth functionality ?

Re: MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

Such ACPI errors are relatively common, most BIOS' don't adhere to the specs but were developed by poking around until windows boots.
Speaking of which: do you dual boot?
Can you post the system journal of a boot w/ the 7.1.2 kernel to contextualize the kernel module w/ the userspace actions?
Eg.

sudo journalctl -b -3 | curl -s -H "Accept: application/json, */*" --upload-file - 'https://paste.c-net.org/'

will upload (curl) the journal for the 3rd last boot ("-3")

@seth
No, I do not dual-boot; Arch Linux is the only OS on this machine

Sorry about that! I realized I had rebooted several times since the crash. Here is the correct journal log from the boot where the issue occurred (-b -4):
Here is the journal log from the boot with the 7.1.2 kernel where the issue occurred:

Sorry for the slow response !!!

@Lone_Wolf
The problem is that even LTS, although not experiencing a panic, still lost internet.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to an ethernet connection right now, so I'm currently relying on USB tethering from my phone. So internet is slow

Re: MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

@seth
Just to clarify, 'battery-dimmer.service' is a small custom script I wrote that only reads from '/sys/class/power_supply/BATx/' to check the battery percentage and adjust the screen brightness via 'brightnessctl'. It only reads power states and does not interact with any hardware buses or power management interfaces of the Wi-Fi card.

Regarding your question: The issue is not limited to battery power. It occurs both when running on battery and when using the external power supply. The Wi-Fi still crashes and triggers the kernel panic regardless of the power state. The PCIe Bus errors (BadTLP, Timeout) seem to appear consistently whenever the connection to the MT7921 fails.

Re: MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

Does it help to add "pcie_aspm=off" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters ?
Does "mt7921e.disable_aspm=1" suffice?

Re: MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

@seth
I implemented the option by creating a file in /etc/modprobe.d/mt7921e.conf with the content "options mt7921e disable_aspm=1" and reloading the module.

I will monitor system performance for a while to see if this prevents the PCIe bus error. If the problem persists, I will try adding the kernel parameter "pcie_aspm=off" to my GRUB configuration as you suggested.

Re: MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

Hello. I wanted to inform you that I'm still experiencing a problem, not a panic, but the computer won't shut down when I try to.

I've noticed an anomaly in the systemd log: normally it only shows `A stop job is running for ...`, but in recent instances it also shows `stop WPA suppliers` and `stop NetworkManager`.

Furthermore, I've also read in journalctl that there are many instances of `driver own failed`:

And when reading output of:

sudo lspci -nnk | grep -A 3 -i net

it shows an error:

The strange thing is that after systemd finished its work, my computer wouldn't shut down. It wouldn't shut down; the lights remained on, the power button was still lit, but the computer didn't completely turn off.I had to force a shutdown using the power button.

what should i do?

Re: MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

I'm experiencing another kernel panic. I've been using it for a while, then the network starts to weaken. The network is still strong, but the browser still takes a long time to load, and then the machine panics, but without the blue screen or panic QR code.

This time I received a different error when running `journalctl -b -1 -k -n 100`, output:

Re: MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

@seth
I'm sorry, I'm a little confused because I don't usually communicate this way.
I've already experimented with the pcie_aspm=off option. But it still panics.
I'm currently reconsidering my approach; it seems I shouldn't be so stubborn anymore and should continue using the LTS version of the kernel. Although network connection issues still occur, at least it won't corrupt my data.

Re: MediaTek MT7921 Wi-Fi Driver Timeout and Kernel Panic (mt7921e)

No problem but posting the full journal would help to gauge the context of those errors - from mac_reset and the bss change this might be roaming related.
