Elden Ring crash in sound initialisation

Hi! I am encountering this problem also sad .
My vulkaninfo recognize my Nvidia card (Quadro RTX A3000) and driver, grep returns both the intel integrated GPU and Nvidia. I got nvidia-open-dkms installed and all the utils libraries.
The game starts through Proton, initializes Vulkan/DXVK/VKD3D, then crashes during Wwise audio initialization.

Running Elden Ring with PROTON_LOG=1 produce this log:

Elden Ring has been out for a while, maybe test a stable proton release instead of experimental?

If this is an actual bug in your audio setup how does that look like, are lib32-libpulse and lib32-libpipewire installed assuming a pipewire setup? What output do you get from

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
aplay -lL #alsa-utils
systemctl --user status pipewire{,-pulse} wireplumber pulseaudio

Yeah I did test with Hotfix and 11 also, still no luck

If this is an actual bug in your audio setup how does that look like, are lib32-libpulse and lib32-libpipewire installed assuming a pipewire setup? What output do you get from

Reply here, the other thread doesn't have a audio subsystem crash and is thus unrelated.

The output looks ok, are the two mentioned packages installed? What do you get from

pactl list cards
pactl list sinks

I ran into what looks like the same issue on an RTX A2000, and I may have found a very specific trigger.

After trying basically everything imaginable, I eventually narrowed the crash down to the '__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME' environment variable. On my system, Elden Ring consistently crashes with a white screen when Steam inherits:

__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia

but launches normally when that variable is unset.

The interesting part is that the other NVIDIA/PRIME variables don't appear to matter. I tested these two environments directly:

env __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia steam

Elden Ring crashes.

env __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME= steam

Elden Ring launches normally.

I also tested with a completely fresh Proton prefix, no launch options, different Proton versions, EAC disabled, Steam Overlay disabled, X11 vs Wayland, etc. Same behavior until I found this.

I'm on an RTX A2000, and while searching for the relevant Proton log error I noticed several other reports involving non-GeForce NVIDIA GPUs, including an A3000, T600, T1200 and RTX 500 Ada. Given how uncommon these workstation GPUs are compared with GeForce cards, I'm wondering if there's a common driver/runtime issue here that isn't getting much exposure.

The particularly weird part is that '__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME' is a GLX/OpenGL variable, while Elden Ring is D3D12 -> VKD3D -> Vulkan, so I have no idea why setting it would affect the game.

If anyone with one of these workstation NVIDIA GPUs can reproduce it, I'd be very interested to know. The minimal reproducer on my machine is simply:

env __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia steam

vs.

env -u __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME steam

The former crashes Elden Ring, the latter works.

Yes, I can reproduce it. I'm on a Dell Precision 5560 with an RTX A2000, running Ubuntu 26.04.

I played this game a while back without needing this workaround, so something within the last year or so has introduced this issue. Went through a few rounds of debugging with ChatGPT but it wasn't able to pin down the issue. This is the only solution so far.

While the exact interaction feels a bit weird, you should generally not have a reason to have these variables exported globally, what are you doing that for?

It gets weirder. I don't have them exported globally. This is a pretty new install of 26.04, and I haven't tinkered with the GPUs. There's nothing about it in my bashrc or fish config. echo $__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME returns nothing, and I don't even have the issue anymore when running steam from the command line. (I know it crashed yesterday because I ran it from the command line to see the output from the crash.)

So today Elden Ring only crashes if steam is launched from the launcher icon, or if I run it with env __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia. So maybe there's something in the launcher. I checked steam.desktop. It has the following suspicious lines:

PrefersNonDefaultGPU=true
X-KDE-RunOnDiscreteGpu=true

I commented them out, logged out and logged back in, and now it doesn't crash when I launch steam from the icon.

It's possible in theory that I set __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME sometime earlier and forgot everything about it. But I think it's more likely now that this is something steam did.
