What package to use to send messages in LAN? When a message is sent a graphical dialog box appears at receiver's side.

In windows it is the messenger service (not instant messenger, but the messenger service).
Not sure what would do that in *nix. Probably something custom.
Pretty sure that smbclient can send messages to windows machines though..is that what you are looking for?
Maybe you could be more specific...

There's klinpopup and probably others in AUR, which send and receive "Winpopups". smbclient -m also sends the message.

I have linked (LAN) five computers (a small clinic) running Arch Linux. Looking forward to find a package which can send messages. Or if it can be easily customized with php. All the computers are running a customized php/mysql program maintaining records of clients, stock and accounts.

I'd also say, have a look at klinpopup in AUR and see the references on top of the home page for three more alternatives. They all seem to use samba.

you could use gajim, a jabber client, together with avahi. the other clients will show up in the roster automatically so you can send instant messages directly to them without configuring any network specific stuff like ip addresses and such.
- pacman -S gajim avahi
- add avahi-daemon to DAEMONS in /etc/rc.conf or start it with /etc/rc.d/avahi-daemon start
- in gajim go to edit -> accounts
- check "enable link-local messaging"
there is also Planimo [1], but that one doesn't use avahi so you have to know the ip addresses, so i'd recommend gajim with avahi.

Thanks!

Cannot get "enable link-local messaging" to appear, remains in shadow.

Also dbus daemon must run for avahi to work. I will setup all and see how it works.
