Hi,
This USB device has always "just worked" on every other distro so trying to configure it is a new task for me.
Ok when I plug it in the message from dmesg is:
usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 6
usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
I did try to plan ahead and I have on my drive these two packages:
at76c503a-cvs
at76c503a-fw-cvs
which I've installed using pacman -A package name.
However even after a reboot nothing is picked up by udev. I've tried to look into this as much as I can and a potential cause could be that I'm using 2.6.16-ARCH (the only kernel available on the install disc) where as the package installed the drivers into /lib/modules/2.6.19-ARCH/etc - does this mean I'm now screwed for getting this to work? I don't have access to ethernet up here!
Any suggestions?

You need to rebuild the modules package for your kernel version otherwise it won't work. You'll need access to a computer with internet to get the PKGBUILD and sources for the drivers so you can transfer them on your arch system for the rebuild.

So every kernel upgrade I perform I will have to recompile these drivers?

Usually these drivers are compiled for the current kernels in the repo so, if you use the kernels in the repos and keep your system up-to-date, there is no need to recompile them.

Good stuff. I've managed to utilise my powerbook's wireless by connecting my main box (arch) to the powerbook by ethernet cable. I'm currently running a pacman -Syu so will wait to see what fun that brings before trying to get the wireless to work.
